I’m thinking he will be more a batting all rounder, kind of like Kallis, though I’m not expecting as wildly as good as him.

I think a batting average 40-45 and bowling average sub 35 is realistic and make him our best all rounder since Keith Miller.

The talent is immense but it would be a fantastic outcome if that is what he wound up doing or better.

Long way to go yet.

Yep Smith came in after homeworkgate in India and made 92, and was then retained for the ashes in 2013, and cemented himself after a century at the oval in the last test and was away after that.
Potentially a big sliding doors moment that century. Without it Smith almost certainly doesn't start the first test in the 13/14 series.

It definitely wouldn't have been the end of his time in a baggy green. He was always too talented, too young and our batting too terrible for that to be the end of the road.

But (fortunately) we'll never know if getting dropped again was just a speed bump in his huge career or if it was a complete confidence killer and his career panned out something akin to say Shaun Marsh...

Of course, but end of the day Steve Waugh was a batsman and that’s what made his name and what he was picked for. His bowling didn’t really come into the selection side of things unless it was ODI cricket or maybe pre 1992 in tests (he was picked at 7 in the West Indies in 1991 for a couple of tests and we went in with only 3 specialist paceman, which backfired badly 2nd innings of 4th test).

Steve made his Test match debut in 1985 as an all-rounder. He'd played around 40 tests by the time that West Indies tour happened.

He took 27 test matches to make a 100.

That he was a handy bowler was certainly keeping him in the side for a fair while.

Yes, he was a batting all-rounder when he still bowled pre-injury.

My point was Green has played a handful of matches at this point, and he's doing as well as one of our best ever players to this point.

Imo, on the eyes test - Thought greens bowling was looking quite nice, at times . The stats didn't back it up. But most bowlers were struggling outside of Cummins and Naseem Shah

52 average with the bat which is better

I really think that century in Perth in that Ashes was when he truly arrived as a player.

Before then, he looked somewhat tentative at the crease. It was like he just decided to go for it and play his shots. I still remember him thwacking Swann over his head for six to start the innings and off he went. Then he followed it up with another in Sydney on a sporting wicket, and the rest is history.

Hopefully that ton comes sooner rather than later to take some of the pressure off him.

Yes, he bowled better than the stats suggests imo

I love watching that series on replay but every time i do i think it was a bit of myth haddin saved us every test, smith really saved us in two of the 5 tests with haddin being his support and was still lot of questions over his place that series as even with his ton in england he was still averaging only 30 in tests so a poor series from him and a ton by bailey then its smith out and bailey in for SA tour.

ODi’s different story, due to Greens batting style can’t see him in ODIs for a while if at all
Nah he has potential and his 144 against I think SA a couple of years back was brutal in the marsh cup

Really looking forward to seeing him in the ODI format for Aus reckon it can free him up a bit....would love to see him be given the opportunity to bat 4 for the three ODI's

with smith warner and maxwell out an opportunity may just present itself if he can get a game.

Some interesting comments re: Green in ODI in this thread.

I won't be a hindsight hero - because there is merit to many of the comments made.

I actually wonder whether the enhanced strokeplay he has found at ODI level might translate to his Test cricket.

Everytime this lad hits a hurdle - he adjust so quickly and improves.

  • from wicketless to taking the key wickets in tests from one series to the next.
  • adapting his batting technique (front leg) mid series.
  • playing in match defining partnerships in both tests and ODIs
  • upping his strokeplay in whiteball cricket (at the death) when it looked like he might struggle at the start of an innings.

His stats look great at present but it is only the start so they can be misleading.

What impresses me most is this continual and rapid improvement in different facets of his game.

It's quite remarkable.

Realistically the next hurdle is making a ton and then importantly backing it up soon after with a second.

In the ODI format bat him four or number 5 and the tons will come IMO

Batting him down the order has been a waste IMO but I have been impressed with his finishing and strike rate.... his 24 off 12 balls was very handy in a low scoring game against the kiwis.

I see greenie in the future batting 4/5 and bowling 5/6 overs a game .

Also I am looking forward to seeing him expand his game in the t20 format with the scorchers this summer

Interesting yesterday with young greenie

After Starcs dropped catch .....we actually saw some frustration from the young fella and I liked it .....his next 3/4 balls reflected that and he let it rip ..and he looked a lot more threatening

Would like to see more from this from young greenie.....bit more aggression with the ball... He is a wonderful young man the kind you would marry your daughter to but sometimes he seems a bit reserved on the field...a bit too nice...express your talents young man get fired up son

Got to stop treating him like some delicate hothouse flower. Genuine allrounders bowl 20 overs per innings if necessary.

With Cummins injured he needed to give Starc/Hazlewood more of a chop out. They ended up bowling a lot of overs and will now go into the Adelaide test fatigued.

I assume he has sort of longer term concern and thats why he is overs restrictions, even if they are bit over cautious probably better than early days with patto where they ruined him, CA seem to be getting better at managing the bowlers so its frustrating but we have to accept they know more than we do about greens health.

hopefully green gets a decent chance to having a crack of getting his first test ton real soon.

meanwhile there's another superstar allrounder going unnoticed ;)

green 36/35
head 40/32

Cummins was saying post match they were mindful of over bowling him after his recent hamstring injury

I agree 100%. He's 23 now, he's been around for a while, when does he get the chance to become the allrounder we hope he will be. At the moment he's a middle order batsman who bowls a little. Time to unleash the beast.
