I don’t think he’s looked like he can become a world class bowler in his test career so far, that 5fer aside.

Handy, yes, but not a world class front liner.

He looked a far better bowling prospect for WA prior to his back injury. For some reason he’s lost most of his control, I think he just doesn’t bowl anywhere near as much as he used to as a bowling all-rounder.

He had a better record than Lance Morris does currently after his first season as a 19 year old prior to the injury.

Conversely, he looked a far worse batting prospect prior to his back injury.

Back then I very much thought he was a potential sub 24 test ave bowling prospect, that might average about 30 with the bat.

Now he looks like a 45+ type with the bat, but I reckon he averages closer to 35 with the ball as he gets older.

If he could become consistent enough to be the third seamer, it would provide great possibilities with the side long term.

Give him time his bowling is fine

I always thought his bowling would end up being his stronger asset - however after hearing him interviewed a little while back - it's clear that will never be the case.

He simply doesn't do the same level of work or training on his bowling. His batting is his priority.

I don't know the sports science behind it all - but i had genuinely hoped he could be both a top 6 batter and a top 4 bowler - that clearly won't be the case.

His bowling as it stands mind you is still sufficient for his role - very much so - but i had hopes of it being mid to high 20's average.

If you look at Ben stokes I see cam bowling about the same amount of overs as him with a better batting average. These days pace all rounders just don’t bowl as much as they used to because the quicks have got fitter and bowl more overs at a higher level.

Cam puts more effort into batting also because he can put in as much as he wants as opposed to bowling where he is on limited minutes etc.

Someone compared him to Kallis. I think his ceiling is around that. Maybe slightly better bowling and averaging 50.

Again his bowling will be fine don't judge him bowling on the roads of India

Kallis averaged 55 with the bat and 32 with the ball....if greenie can get anywhere near those figures he will be a gem

Going forward I can see greenie batting up the order at four when smudge retires and bowling up 12-15 overs per innings

None is judging him on his bowling in just India.

He just doesn’t look like an absolute top quality seamer. Don’t think he has the body for it tbh either.

He will be more than handy, yes, but comparisons to Morkel? Who had 60+ wickets after 20 tests…

He will have the odd spell that changes a game, no doubt, but I don’t think he will ever be relied upon as a 3rd seamer in conditions outside of the subcontinent.

All all-rounders bowl less as they get older, not more. As was stated a few posts above, his priority is batting, not bowling.

He averages 8 overs an innings now, I can’t see that potentially doubling as he gets to his late 20’s.

Sigh

he just took 5 wickets against the saffers 3 tests ago against the poms he was knicking off root oneof the best bats in the world for fun

I am not comparing him to morkel he is an allrounder and he is doing fine

Far out what do people want...a hundred every time he bats and a 5 for when he bowls ?

his bowling is fine

He also failed to take a wicket against India at home.

That’s why we call them averages.

He will be a perfectly fine test all rounder from a bowling perspective, but you are way over blowing his bowling to date.

He will average 32-36 imo, which isn’t good enough for one of our front line quicks, which sounds about right

Bowling is a work in progress, batting he is doing really well. What he did with the bat last game, to come out with intent to make a difference - is what I would like to see him do with the ball. Bowls good pace, good bounce, can move it but there is not the sense of menace I would like in the bowling overall.

The pitch was a road and it was very hard for all pace bowlers on that wicket.

BGman mentioned it during the game that he was tailing it in which he was and was keeping it tight and we where looking for reverse the whole game which did not happen ....then they came up with a stupid plan of bowling short stuff at Bharat to a short boundary and he copped some stick but so did starc as well. They tried something different as the pitch was giving them nothing fair enough

Again I will say it again his bowling is fine and I don't know what you guys want....give him more favourable conditions in england where he has never played NZ and South africa and his bowling I guarantee will improve

Far out guys just be happy with what we have got he is a number six batter (who I believe is capable of batting higher) and he bowls 135 to 140..thats gold

Not just that pitch, a general observation. Also on the previous pitch where he bowled what two overs with the new ball and got hit.

You seem very defensive about a player that everybody considers the future of our side. Does not mean that posters can't comment on areas where he can get better, given that he is quite young.

Thought he bowled far better than his figures overall. He actually managed to get substantial reverse swing, which was exciting!

Copped a bit of stick when going the short stuff, but so did literally every pace bowler. It was just a desperate plan that didn't come off.

Towards the end of the bowling innings he did start to completely lose his line and length, but I'll put that down to tiredness. His pace also dropped off, it was a long couple of days in the field in very hot weather, and he spent a bunch of time at the crease before that. He just looked spent.

Coming back from injury, and having never really been called on to bowl long spells before anyway, I thought he acquitted himself ok. And his ability to get reverse is very exciting.

Of course you can comment its a forum and I am all for debate

Its just the expectations that some posters have on green which I believe is a bit unfair

He is doing fine IMO

Fair enough. If he can hold a place in the top 6 and bowl a few overs I am happy. But I could be happier.....

Also lots of expectation on him because he is the only world class young prospect we have (although we now have a Murphy).

Feels like injuries are robbing us of two other prospects I'd have in the same talent class in Richardson and Pucovski. Really sucks =(

I think overall he should be comfortably better than Shane Watson in both disciplines at least, that would be a good result
Red ball cricket - definitely thought watto definitely under performed during his time in the test team.

If he is comfortably better than watto at white ball cricket we potentially have the greatest player in history lol

Comfortably might be a stretch, but if he averages under 30 with the ball and over 40 with the bat (which I think he should) he’d statistically be better, he might even go mid 40s with the stick
