Problem with dropping cricketers is that it normally causes way more issues - many tend to fall even further away. They don’t go back & “work on” their technique flaws, they just sulk & have sources whinge to the media about being dropped.

While we’re winning there’s an argument to be made to keep the youngest player in the team in. I hate this cricket mentality but I’m also accepting that it is the way it is.

Talks of bringing in Cooper Connolly are 100% going to end the same way in 12-24 months lol that’s just crazy talk
The ones who go back and sulk were never going to make it anyway. I think green has a good attitude, drop him both for the team and himself

I think it’s a little bit harder now, especially for someone like Green who’s going to be picked in the ODI and 20/20 teams.

He can’t really go back to shield cricket and play consistent games at that level to fix some of his issues in the same way that players from other generations were able to.

The constant grind of meaningless series and tournaments make it much harder for him to regain form for test match cricket, unless he’s dropped from all national sides which won’t happen.

That’s somewhat fair but he can withdraw himself from those to get shield form in or he can wait until he gets the chance. No one is entitled to a test spot and his form doesn’t warrant it.

Agree with the last part in regards to his form, but I can’t see CA letting him withdraw from national selection to focus on shield cricket.

It’s starting to feel like he’s going to have a Shane Watson career which is a shame as I think he more talented than he’s shown.

He has missed white ball tournaments to concentrate on test cricket...played county and missed out on white ball to play shield .....he did well but it's not translating over into test cricket thats the problem

Shane Watson's peak was far better than anything Green has done. Watson averaged over 40 with the bat and under 30 with ball at stages of his career.

Both superstars who avg less then 36 deary me how the bar is low

Bavuma averages 38 and about 50 since 2020. Hooper averaged 33 quite late in his career before a two year break and then returned to finish with a final average 36. So that was a dramatic improvement. Ian Chappell and Usman are good examples, while Hussey didn't make his test debut until about 30..
..getting back to the topic at hand: Green at 26 is still young

A week ago Gideon said of Green "He has always been the answer to the last question." Meaning he has been shifted around to plug gaps.

One of the TGC guys said the other day that we need to work out what we actually want from him. Expecting him to be the next Kallis is stupid.

I agree with them both.

To me, a batting average of 38 and a bowling average of 28 would be an enormous win. I think that is within reach.

I remain a believer but I want to let him settle at 5 or 6. We have only had five century-makers on tours of India since 2013. Clarke, Smith, Khawaja, Maxwell and Green. He has something at the crease.

I also think he is a genuinely good bowler. Like, proper good. That gives him and the team something. I would be working on a way to increase his overs per-innings by 10-15%.

His bowling isn’t much but you don’t need it to be much. He is bowling 5-10 overs an innings. You hope he gets the odd breakthrough but he’s not someone who will take a ton of Test wickets. I wish he was a bit tighter than he is, gives away a few too many easy runs. Does get asked to bowl the bouncer plan occasionally which also hurts his figures

His batting is the issue. He doesn’t move his feet early and is going to be vulnerable at the start. Needs to get better at that. I don’t think he should ever be top four, much better suited so play when the ball isn’t doing as much. Can defend well when set and can hit well when set but probably isn’t good enough at rotating the strike and switching through the gears. It can be a bit of either blocking or bashing. That’s just stuff that all young bats need to work through at some stage and I’m sure he’ll hey there. That 174 in NZ showed it was there

My bigger issue this series has been his mentality. Just going through the motions, no real hunger. Like a few of the English he is playing like a guy who knows there is no consequences for his actions. The dismissal at the Gabba was embarrassing, especially when he should have been really really keen to make a hundred and stop some of the talk about him. He was batting well before it and some would forgive him for it. But then to back it up with that first innings dismissal here just showed that he isn’t locked in. So lazy and should have been in a real mentality to atone for that Brisbane mistake

He is still going to be a good player. I will want him in the side for the next 10 years I’m sure. I want him dropped now though because I feel without the kick up the arse he will stay an almost player and never reach his potential. Webster performed perfectly fine when Green was unable to bowl and is unlucky not to be in the team, so it’s not like we have no other options

With his. Bowling he always comes on when the ball is old they never use him in the 15 overs when the ball is new. Yes I understand the new ball is for the front line quicks but he is never given a chance with a new pill

And when he does get a wicket gets taken off straight away

His wickets are generally top six batters so That’s a positive

I agree his batting has been thrown around everywhere these past few months and it’s. It helping if he does play leave him at six

I’ve never seen it with his batting.

For someone with his power and size he simply doesn’t use either anywhere near enough at test level.

Lost count of how many innings he comes in and just blocks the ball for overs and overs inviting pressure and then ending up going out for a crap score.

I’ve always wondered if he’s been coached to play like that.

When he’s been more aggressive I’ve thought he’s looked good but it’s simply few and far between

His ton against NZ was very very good and his hundred in india

and I have seen him in the shield bat like a jet on issue is he is not batting as he should test level really worried about him going forward

Webster needs to replace Green for last 2 tests. Really didn’t deserve to be left out in the first place.
Pity he doesn’t bowl his offspin anymore as having him as both medium pace and spin option would be fascinating. Excellent fieldsman and gets that steep bounce when bowling. Just not as marketable. 🙄
