I want to drop Green so he can go and find form, his shield average is from years ago we will see if he instantly goes back to performing that well.

In terms of who replaces him i am okay with multiple options including dropping Head back to 5, Renshaw open and Green back to shield.

He simply does not warrant a test number 5 spot.
Do people still feel like Head will drop to 5? Yes his struggles as an opener may come later down the track but for now he’s done everything right of the position. Has opened in Australia and the subcontinent and succeeded in that role. South Africa and England will be the test for him but he likes facing the quicks first up preferably than the slower ballers when he first comes in at 5 and he quickly lays a platform for our middle order. I’d be inclined to leave him there while his confidence is high.

Im fine with him batting at 5 or opening, I think it more comes down to whether we can find a suitable opener or 5 easier

want him to succeed but needs to do more. not on his own having a bad run. solid 5th test without being great.

can anyone beat the door down though? webster can roll the arm but green seems like better insurance for the old fast bowlers. webster should have done enough to take over usman's spot unless they want some new faces that are in form.

a utility type player like webster (connolly) may be handy with the way we set up our side in india.

no reason why green, webster, carey can't bat 5,6,7 moving forward, with the traditional 3 quicks and spinner.

if green can just post a few scores of note, he will be off and away.

A team looking something like the following seems strong enough to challenge most oppositions:

Kellaway (seems next in line) or Renshaw
Head
Labs (maybe?) - Renshaw/McSweeney
Smith
McSweeney or Renshaw
Carey
Green
Webster
Cummins
Starc
Boland/Lyon/Hazlewood

Kuhnemann/Murphy there to rotate in depending on the pitches served up

Batting looks better (Uzzie was pretty much cooked the last two years of this career, while Weatherald probably isn't the answer), while bowling has variety to succeed in all types of conditions.

Green needs to go back to shield and work on his mentality of continually getting himself out. That is obvious.
Should take a few weeks off playing imo

Link up with his batting coach and spend the time sorting his technique flaws out .
Then get back to playing and get back to making big runs .

He's skipped the BBL to take some time off so that's a start.

But he's then going to the T20 world cup and will be missing shield games

I agree with that. Hes definitely good enough for test level but hes really heading downward and keeping him in does no benefit for him or the team. He needs to go away and work on some things and then come back.

South Africa head will really struggle against the moving ball as an opener-although to be fair anyone we pick there (except maybe renshaw but even him) might struggle so they may leave head at the top. Ultimately I think hes a 5 but our lack of openers means we have to be flexible.

I'm pleased Green has stepped away from the BBL. It's clear mentally it's been a battle for him this summer.. lets see how he goes moving forward.

He didnt step away he just wasn't signed with a team.

So, am I right that he's skipping both BBL and Shield, doing T20 World Cup and IPL, no county cricket and so won't have had any red ball practice before Bangladesh and South Africa?

If that's correct, then his choice looks pretty clear.

Pretty much i think.
Hes a regular in the white ball squads and no way is he skipping the IPL when he got bought for that much. Unless he takes on a county stint cant do much else.

Test form wasn't exactly convincing to suggest a County would sign him, but depends on their requirements and his availability.

At what stage would you support Green being dropped if his average form continues?
When there is a viable alternative killing it the shield not averaging under 40 and don't say renners he is an opener

and based upon the logic in this thread if you are going to drop green who made 37 took a wicket and was 22 not out at the end in a tricky chase in his last test...you would have to drop weathers and marnus who has not scored a ton for years

and with Macca wanting carey at six its a perfect opportunity for webbie to bat seven and with ussie gone green can settle at number 5 and stop being being moved around every test from 3-8 which has stuffed him up these last 12 months

So he could have another 3 or 4 series like this and he would be safe?

Poor form can't continually be rewarded, regardless of who else is going through poor form and regardless of what options there are for replacement.

Re your "look, over there" deflection, plenty have been questioning both Marnus and Weatherald, many of whom who think one or both should be dropped.

As much as the constant bagging of the bloke is infuriating, blind and unflinching support no matter what is hardly any better.

At some stage he's going to have to live up to his "potential".

No issue with him being dropped, but the stick a fork in him/career over stuff from some quarters just reflects the nuffie level of discourse that now infests this board.

The problem now is where his chance to find first class form his going to come from given the next 6-7 months schedule - particularly when white ball commitments are going to rule out the bulk of the season for any CC stint.

7 months to the next Test, but we need to be thinking about transitioning the team so we don’t have a stack of retirements at the same time.

1 Head
2 Renshaw- should have played ahead of Weatherald who is too LBW prone
3 McSweeney - deserves a chance not as an opener. Marnus form slump has been fot 3 years!
4 Smith
5 Green - assuming works out his mental issues
6 Carey
7 Webster
8 Cummins
9 Starc
10 Boland - pick over Hazelwood
11 Spinner to replace Lyon - Kuhnemann or Murphy

You suggesting forcing Lyon into retirement?... won't happen lol.

Bangladesh they'll likely pick 2 spinners.. Lyon and Kuhnemann

Head
Renshaw
Labs
Smith
McSweeney
Green
Carey
Starc
Cummins
Lyon
Kuhnamann

would be my Bangladesh first XI.
