With even fewer rotations and longer periods on the ground next year I see more 'midfielders' playing in the back line and forward line, because we need to be able to out-run opponents and the burst players take up half the bench space.

The disappointing thing was the lack of improvement:

2013: one on one versus Gunston on the wing, don't argue from Gunston, missed tackle which lead to a goal.

2015: Trails Breust into a bouncing ball on the wing and is completely wrong footed which leads to a goal.

It's a lack of strength / lack of lateral movement. Defenders should be athletically as good as the forwards. Forwards more creative, defenders perhaps better readers of the play. If isolated I don't trust him to win his fair share. Spurr isn't losing either of those contests.

Yeah have to agree. I know Ross loves him, but I think I'd rather Grey over Sutty in the back six.

Breust does that to a lot of defenders. The problem was the angle and the way footy players tackle. If Sutcliffe had aimed at his hips he'd have nailed him however he was trying to cover the inside and whiffed.

Breust went about 5 weeks without a goal. He's got a great don't argue, but put an athletic bloke on him, 2-3 inches bigger and he's blanketed. I'd back someone like Grey to keep him quiet. Grey is an animal in the contest and has a vertical leap that reduces the impact of him being undersized height wise.

Problem is Grey isn't a great kick. Transition out of the backline would suffer. Mind you it's bog average already.
Sutty doesn't appear to do a great deal of 'distributing' out of the back half though. Granted he's a decent kick and probably in our top 5-6 disposal wise, but I just don't seem to remember him regularly disposing by foot out of the backline when we transition the ball. So, Grey would potentially give us an upgrade on the defensive side of things and we wouldn't lose too much because the role doesn't appear to include a great deal of kicking out of defence. In saying that, you're right about Greys disposal. He did put a few ordinary kicks out of defence in the Port game.

I thought he was okay. He had a poor first half of the season but improved quite a bit in the 2nd half. He won't truly flourish until he is moved into the midfield.

Good spot. I thought that was worse than Sheridan's fumble.

The lack of chains from out of defence was a weakness this year. Our brilliant distributor Duffield seems good as gone, MJ was injured too long and Sutty, who we thought would be the new faster Duffield, didn't build on his great 2014. Ibbo and Spur had good years, but counterattack from half back is crucial in the modern game and we need Sutty and Sherro to lift.

Few of these boys in the same spot only hope they can find some improvement next year Sutcliffe and Sheridan look better suited to a wing maybe? swing Hill back permanently and replace Pearce who has been good servant but...

I thought this finals series was the most composed we have had from D Pearce. He was ok. Not that I've seen a replay of the loss.

Sutcliffe does take risks with kicking. As has been mentioned he was better last year.

RTB wasn't impressed with his kick to Mzungu in the last quarter but it may have been realisation that the season was dusted.

I remember being at the Collingwood Thu night game and Sutcliffe had an easy down the line kick going to our half forward line but chose the risky corridor kick and buggered it up. It was right in front of me and I remember him slamming the ground with his fist. He was dropped to the WAFL for a few weeks after that game.

Decision making under pressure has been his downfall and the last line of defence isn't his happy place.

Sutty didn't have an amazing year, but I don't think it was caused off his own back. I think a lot of it had to do with being played out of position, or getting harder/bigger opponents than he usually would, because of injuries and changes to our backline. He's still got the talent there. And he certainly deserved his position in the team. Let's hope with a consistent backline next year he's able to learn from the experiences of this one.

He got out-read and out-bodied too many times in defence, I think he only gets a pass this year because of our actual game-plan and the fact that he was playing a new role. He needs to get bigger or else he should just play a more offensive role anywhere on the ground. Honestly feels like he was just making up the numbers down back. We could improve overall and get more out of him if he's elsewhere.

I'm suprised that he doesn't have legs like Fyfe yet. They live together, is it too much to ask that he tries to become Fyfe 2.0?

Maybe he doesn't want to lose his speed?

Some of our players need to bulk up like Fyfe.
