I'm happy enough with Wood. Has improved every year imo. Still only 23? Has about 50 games now. Has played some good games that show he is capable and last year I thought that as a whole he still contributed in his "bad" games. Compared to other rucks of similar age is tracking well. Needs to keep improving obviously is clearly our #2 ruck in 2012 imo.

I have lost a lot of faith in Wood the last year but I think this is a fair summation.

My biggest criticism is that he is inconsistent which you hope will come with experience and consistent game time. My other criticism is that he still lacks strength and particularly at throw ins gets out muscled. This you would hope he would have developed by now and i'm dubious he ever will.

But he has a good base to work with and with Jolly number 1 ruck atm and talent beneath we are set up ok in the ruck department. He isn't a bad number two by any stretch and he is entering that age period you expect him to start coming good.

If anything Quick to me he seems to lack focus, that's something that CAN be turned around if the right approach is taken - and that varies from person to person.

If he can find a reason to focus - one that's important to him - then he could very well surprise. However I tend to be a little skeptical, especially when you have reports of young Witts, for all his youth, having a fair bit of 'mongrel' in him.

All ruckmen need aggression - not violent anti-social - but the will to attack the ball and use their bodies in the cause of their team and team mates. Either Cam lacks this or he's totally unfocused in his attempts.

I think that part of his game will develop as he plays more senior football. His first 50 games spent trying to prove himself/get his hands on the ball/do a 'good' job whilst Jolly out. However 2012 he has the opportunity to break the shackles & play his own game, becoming part of the 22. More games, more confidence, more aggression. I look forward to his next season.

Maybe having Witts there will help Wood get the Motivation he Needs?

Wood certainly tests your patience Dave

Next time you see him wandering around like a lost soul in the VFL at Vic Park, give one of those famous TD serves will ya?

Otherwise, stick a couple of hot chillis up his clacker

I have Complained about wood at Time during last VFL Season and Maybe a Fan Rocket might Help.

Ceglar and Witts Could pass him by end of next season

Will be one of the more interesting stories next year, the development of Witts and Ceglar.

IMHO they're another year away ... but ultimately they'll both pass Wood pretty easily, and if they don't we're in strife.

so what do we do with wood after next year ?

id delist him tbh

Why don't we wait until he has played the season until we discuss that one.

You have a very black and white opinion of players from your posts.

Either complete duds or awesome.

I know Wood is not one of your favourites but he'll be at the club next seaons so lets hope he proves us wrong.

At the very least I hope you can see the wisdom in retaining him on the list this season. If Jolly is injured it is critical we have a back up ready to go.

I can guarantee that Witts will not walk into the team next season. Sandilands is a pretty good footballer and it took a couple of years for him to do something meaningful around the ground. Sure, he got his hand to the ball in the ruck but he wasn't much value early on.

Wood has been growing up for the last 5 years. He's grown up as a skinny tall kid who looks like he would have been a bit of a dork.... On the other hand, Jolley would have had a fairly big body during his school years and this means that he would have been a leader at school. He would have got early confidence in being able to use his strength and size. Wood would not have had much of that.

Wood's improved in this area. Obvously, not as fast as most fans would like, but he does seem to be "growing up". There are times when he did fairly well in games. I sometimes wonder how he would have gone in the grand final if he had been given a go....

Wood has shown all the signs that he could be a good ruckman, he just hasn't put it all together on a consistent basis. He is still improving and right now he's a serviceable player. He certainly still needs to work on throwing his body around and using it in marking contests, but in 2011 he did well and I can't remember him getting smashed.

I said it before but he needs to improve again this season. If he doesn't it'll probably be the end of him depending on how our other rucks go. He might get a 1 year contract extension.

Unless you are a selector, then you can't guarantee that.
You can give an opinion that he might take a bit of time to get into the seniors, but nothing more than that.

Dave has a habit of getting these things right
