Campo’s Shepparton Diary – Day 2

This morning I was woken by the ring tone of Captain Kouta’s Optus mobile. Kouta the media star that he is had morning radio duties reporting back to the media we had left behind in Melbourne and while Kouta lay in bed on the phone, their were four other blue boys up and about doing the media rounds.

Bret Thornton and the big Irishman, Setanta O’hAilpin hopped into a canoe for a paddle and photo for the Herald Sun. While Digby Morrell and Glenny Bowyer made the short trip to the Sun FM studios for a guest spot on their breakfast show and while the boys were in the studio the rest of the team enjoyed listening to their entertaining half hour on air.

When the boys returned, the squad headed over the road for our 7.30am training session at Aquamoves pool and gym, a venue that I would recommend any visitors to Shepparton to use! I had to give them a plug as they really looked after us. Players were split into two groups, one group headed for a 40 minute session in the gym, while the other group made their way to the pool. While yesterday we would have died to swim in the nice cool outdoor pool, this morning was a different story and despite how hard we tried to get into the indoor pool, strength & conditioning coach Pete Mulkearns insisted we swim in the outdoor pool. The walk from the gym to the pool was the worst, but fortunately the pool hadn’t lost all its heat from the previous day.

Again it was local boys Justin Davies and David Teague along with arguably yesterdays B.O.G during the practice match Andrew Walker that the media were keen to chat with. After the session it was back to the Motel for a cooked breakfast, of which at least half of it was consumed by the O’hAilpin brothers and Walks.

This morning we completed out first group of school visits. Karl Norman and Jordan Russell join me at Kialla Primary School, but it was again Teaguee who stole all the attention as he returned to his former stamping ground Katandra West Primary School. Meanwhile Davo also returned to his previous school Shepparton High. All in all we visited 11 Schools before we all met back at the Motel for lunch.

After lunch, we sat through the AFL Umpires Decisional Tape, with umpires Shane McInerney and Matt Stevic. Shane and Matt have joined us on our community camp, the boys umpired our practice match yesterday, visited some schools this afternoon and will conduct an Umpiring forum tomorrow night at our community forums.

Again we boarded the coach for hospital, community and special school visits. I was joined by 9 other players at the Goulburn Valley Base Hospital. New recruit Eddie Betts was to join us at the hospital, but he made a late dash to Mooroopna Primary School for a photo with a number of the students.

Time flew during the hospital visit and before you knew it, it was back to the Motel for dinner, but while most of the guy’s headed in for dinner, it was my turn to do some media rounds and once that was completed it was free time for the rest of the night.

And while the majority of the boys took the time to play tennis on the xbox in their Motel rooms, or watch a few races at the TAB, the ever popular Andrew Walker headed back over to Aquamoves for a photo with the herald sun. Meanwhile I enjoyed our first quiet night in Shepparton, preparing for our big tennis tournament tomorrow that luckily has been transferred from the Lawn Tennis courts to the indoor venue SportZone.

From a wet and windy Shepparton,

Cheers’
