Opinion Can Dustin Martin be the GOAT? (Answer: no)

This post is beautiful, the irony that Martin destroyed your team in a big final only a few games ago.

The corruption of having to play at the away teams home ground.

Only 2 weeks prior we rested Selwood/Duncan/Hawkins and DangerGola tore Cotchin/Martin apart.

The corruption of the bye rd. Not to mention feeling psychologically robbed having to play at the away teams home ground.

Only 2 weeks prior (and without the corruption of a bye) we rested Selwood/Duncan/Hawkins and DangerGola tore Cotchin/Martin apart.

What do you have to say to that?
Nice! We can crown Geelong the Round 21 Champions, where DangerGola's efforts inspired them to a great win.

It was an important win too, the Cats obviously took that psychological edge and carried it to the first final. Danger also hit a record 3 targets in that QF so I was impressed.

I imagine he'd say, 'Richmond are premiers'. That's all that matters, really.

That's nice, nobody will remember that ultimately meaningless round 21 game, but keep harping on it you only continue to loo more and more bitter.
When it mattered we not only best you but completely annihilated you and none of your pathetic excuses will ever change the reality.

annihalted?? we were level with you in the 3rd qtr. you guys really have low bars. Come back when you have won multiple finals by over 100 points each.

Geelong had a great 2017.

Rd 21 Champs
Midway 3rd Quarter Champs

I heard their warm-up routines in the change-rooms were unbeatable as well..............................

What else?

Richmond physically dominated soft Geelong all over the field throughout the whole game the only time Geelong even looked like challenging was in the 3rd quarter when the scores were level only for Richmond to put the foot down and kick the next few goals and then completely rout Geelong in the last

Every time a player has a bumper year as the premier inside/outside goalkicking midfielder, this thread follows in a matter of nanoseconds.

In the modern era Kouta, Judd, Ablett, Goodes, Fyfe and Dangerfield and a arguably a few others have all managed at least one year which, if replicated consistently over 4 or 5 seasons, would have made them clearly the GOAT.

But as we keep on seeing, it is really freaking hard for those kinds of players to keep on delivering their best years. When you look at how many names on the above list quickly slowed down with chronic or degenerative injuries after their best few years, you get a sense of how the combination of running ability, inside ball winning strength and explosive power that the top group of elite midfielders have is at the edge of what is athletically possible- those who can do it generally can't consistently do it for more than a few years. The reason Ablett tops the list is not because his best was necessarily better than any of those other names but because he maintained his best for the longest.

So really all that anyone can usefully say about Martin at this point is he's had an exceptional year as a power midfielder which when you factor in his finals performances, compares to the best years that any of the above names delivered.

But like most who have those kinds of years it will be really hard for him to replicate it. Might do, but probably won't.

Good point. Martin, Dangerfield and Fyfe are now all in a position where their coaches should use them responsibly instead of run up the miles. All 3 are just as good if not better forward and should play there more often.

Out of necessity the Hawks were rewarded for managing Hodge and Burgoyne, both of whom could've probably been superstar powerful 30+ touch midfielders if needed but often coasted through games on a back or forward flank whilst Mitchell, Lewis, Shiels, Roughy etc did the crash and bash midfield stuff.

Goals are even better than sweet skills from half back so really there's no reason why moving the superstar midfielders forward weakens the team. Geelong certainly have the depth for it and Richmond and Freo have capable mids as well.

I don't think he can. He'll be one of the guys remembered fondly from this era but all the guys vying for GOAT status were consistently dominating from an early age. It took him longer than others to really take over games consistently

Gary Ablett Snr took a while to get up and going.

In Dusty’s 2nd season he was already being compared with Leigh Matthews. There’s multiple articles about it.

Bradd Dalziell's debut game was compared to Chris Judd; neither went on with the comparisons in the immediate aftermath.
And you don't think Dusty's done anything since that 2nd year? The point made was valid and had occurred to me. Up until 2007 the young Gazza's career trajectory had been disappointing, then he suddenly burst on the scene when his team clicked. The consensus among commentators in Dusty's first year was that, if he hadn't been suspended, he would have won the rising star in a canter. His second year was described by someone (it may even have been Leigh Matthews again) as the best season they'd seen from a 2nd year player. All but one year since then he has statistically improved. So it's not as if he's done nothing for his career and then suddenly broken out. What is true, I'll concede, is that he has only had the one year at the very highest level and he needs to back that up to be comparable to Gazza Judd et al. Can he do it? If he has three or more years playing at the level he did this year then he would be a GOAT contender for sure. So it's not a stupid proposition.

Any thoughts on what is wrong with Martin? I know the easy answer will be mental health, but surely there is more to it?

One of the greatest years in 2017 obviously. He was ok in 2018, but nothing special and has been very poor this year.
In 2017 he was entering his prime but has been a steady decline since then.

I won't beat around the bush, but in 2017 he climbed the top of the mountain. Brownlow medal in one of the best individual seasons, premiership medal and lastly a huge 7 year contract that will set him up. Has some of the hunger and drive been lost?

To quote Marvin Hagler:
"It's tough to get out of bed to do roadwork at 5 am when you've been sleeping in silk pajamas"

His possessions per game have dropped way down, from 29.8 in 2017, 25.3 last year to 21.7 this year, his lowest since 2010

It’s not like he’s playing a different role either, most likely it’s a hunger thing.

Up until 2017, he couldn’t run out a game. Then, suddenly he had a tank and he was super man. Now he’s back to where he was. Not hard to work it out.

Not happy with his form at all. What a you suggesting tho ?. Haven't got the balls to say it tho.As usual the mods will let it go through.

I think he simply peaked in 2017. What he is delivering up at the moment isn’t terrible, but he just isn’t a superstar anymore. He will still produce moments and games of brilliance, but I just cannot see him replicating or even getting close to 2017 ever again.
