They will be a top four side for quite some time, and that means they're always a chance. Selwood, Harry Taylor, Bartel, Ablett/Compensation top pick and several other quality young players.

Only way they can do it is if Ablett leaves, then getting the No.1 draft pick compensation plus probably another 1st round pick and re-building on the run.

Or by strengthening through trading to get a running midfielder and ruckman.

Gold Coast will never give their no. 1 2 or 3 draft picks for ablett.
Far too valuable.
More likely, a first round pick this year and one next year

They will be Top 4 with or without Ablett next year which is what you need to be competitive and have a chance at finals glory. However it will definitely be difficult without Ablett and with the improvements of Collingwood and St Kilda and development of the other sides their chances will be much harder.

They don't trade for Ablett remember, if they sign him the AFL gives the Cats a compo pick.

If Ablett and Bomber leave I think they're gone. Brisbane and West Coast lost just as much and they crashed hard.

I wouldn't expect Geelong to finish any higher than 5th next year if Ablett goes. If they make finals they should be satisfied.

No first year player has ever been as good as Ablett this year, with the exception of maybe Coleman and Bunton.

Unless the Cats draft John Coleman they will be replacing Ablett with an inferior player. If they lose Ablett they WILL get worse.
