Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft? - Part 2

Maybe.

Just come off a long term injury and very much a Clarko-style player. Not sure how he adapts to playing in another system.
He's been the best intercepting and rebounding defender for a while. As in a package of both. btw.

Can’t be the best at anything while you’re sitting on the sidelines, and players never come back and resume their usual and expected formline following significant injuries.

Mustn't of watched Impey after his got fit this year then..

Sicily can pinch hit as a key defender at best - he almost exclusively plays loose. Otherwise you’re describing Docherty, who was the best half back in the comp prior to injury.

No one knows how Sicily is going to back up post-injury, and he plays a more specific role than Doc.

Docherty was great but 2 ACL's in a row are going to take away your edge and they have for him. Still a pretty decent player.
Docherty is not however that great in the air and certainly was not on the same level as Siciliy in that area even pre injury.
Yes - no one knows how Sicily will return but that's true of every player who has a serious injury.

11 touches is an OK day for Polec?

Not to derail the thread anymore than it already has been, but surely you’d expect a little more of a guy you’re paying 700k pa.
Yeah, not sure why you are talking about Polec in this thread. Do you also post as THEGUN?

Docherty was exceptional in the air at his peak. Not exactly like-for-like, Sicily is slightly better in a pack situation, but Docherty’s bread and butter was intercepting and repelling opposition attacks. His agility prior to his ACL was exceptional.

And how many players, especially A-graders, who have had serious injuries return to their pre-injury standard? It just doesn’t happen. Don’t have to stretch too much to acknowledge Sicily isn’t going to be the same player when he gets back playing AFL.

If my club gave up pick 15 for Wingard I'd spew. That guy is a cancer to a team. So toxic. Imagine giving a young key forward a spray like that and sulking it up.

From all reports, a massive team player. Would rather the kind of passion he showed on the weekend game than the acceptance of mediocrity that has gone on at Carlton for over 2 decades now. Maybe if Carlton players were a bit more passionate about on field performance like Wingard, Carlton might be sitting inside the 8?

Who was the last player traded directly off a serious injury? O'Meara? I don't count Patton who was traded for peanuts.

Daniher was pretty close to this. Nearly went to Sydney after not playing since round 9 that season, and a total of 4 games for the year. Went to Brisbane after playing 4, 4 and 7 games in the previous 3 seasons. Key forward vs rebounding defender makes a big difference though.

Daniher's 'nearly' trade value was reportedly two first round picks which is nuts for an injured guy a year out from free agency. Brisbane signed him as a free agent and gave up nothing.

Much easier to find a mid sized defender than a key forward capable of kicking 60 in a year though. We have Elliot Yeo who is IMO our best mid and an inside bull and he's awesome when he plays at half back. Brad Sheppard didn't really work out as a mid/wingman and is now an AA half back. Sicily is the sort of guy who if we had mid season trades like the NBA would be being looked at by clubs up until the trade deadline in 2022 to see how he is progressing after missing a year. Not worth the gamble of an early pick and not going to be given away for pick 30.

‘they said he would hate Kokoda. So much so he wore the green hat form there all the following pre season

Impey had his serious LTI in 2019 and came back in 2020.
He came back for a few games but went out not long after with rib injuries after playing as a forward aswell.

Went down back and has gotten back to his best and better + he relies more on swift movement than Sicily does and he had less time. Sicily would of had months on months extra time to recover.

Take it up with the AFL Hairy … 186cm

You can argue about his height, and whether he has grown in stature since his draft year, but he's certainly grown as a person.

Doesn't seem to get as rattled by spuds like Jed Lamb riling him up these days. Jed who?

That's Sicily choking the last remnants of a career out of Jed before Lamb was finally delisted the following season. Hard to judge their height difference from that photo. 5cm according to the records. Disgraceful bullying from Sicily. Thank god he's beyond that kind of thing now.

Heart goes out to Hawks fans - trolling a random fringe player from a bygone era is about as good as it gets at present. Very creative though.

That Sicily chokehold is the pictorial expression of what 17 clubs do to the lowly Hawks on a weekly basis.
