Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft?

This whole average list age thing is a non-argument anyway. It's a blunt measure in general, 30 is an arbitrary number and in our case, the age (24.9 according to Draftguru) was pushed up this year by players who had no impact on-field - Birchall (31), Schoenmakers (28), Langford (27), Tim Mohr (30), Darren Minchington (25), Dave Mirra (28), who are gone or will be (in Langford's case). Those ages are rounded down, they're all point-something and I cbf working it out. But you get the point. I'll be interested to see how much it's gone down after the final lodgement, with basically no negative impact on-field.

Sounds like the kind of thing a person with a really old list would say.

While I agree that average age is abit silly as a way to measure teams you do realise that most teams lose about 6-8 players a year of varying ages.

You just listed 6.

Using my club as an example. We are losing Myers (31) Baguley (32) Houlahan (21) and most likely Clarke (29), Hartley (26) and Long (23)

As of this moment GWS, Collingwood, North Melbourne, Melbourne and West Coast all have an older list than Hawthorn! Age is just a number. Go and take a look at some of the champions winners across other sports with teams who had an old roster/list. :$

Yep, agreed. My point is most of the ones we're losing a) pushed our age up, while b) not playing a role on-field (3 games between the 6 of them, all Birchall). Like I said, it'll be interesting to see where we end up once all the lists are final, but I won't get worried if we're a whole 8 or 9 months older than the middle teams (like we were this year).

1971, 1978 etc. was a long time ago boys

This is true.

The answer to this thread was a no they can't succeed.

Time for a new thread.

Can Hawthorn succeed by returning to the elite end of the draft?

I don't know why but I'm a little nervous about who Hawthorn will select with pick 11, it's more likely Hawthorn will find a decent player with pick 63 or 87 if recent history is anything to go by.

Will be interesting to see where Finn goes.

Has been predicted in that 15-25 range all year. (Ideal for you guys)

But kick ass combine results plus having attributes that are hyped at the moment (big bodied Mid with pace) might see him be a bolter.

If only dodo had a pick in the top 10.

Oh dear. This won't end well. We love Worps but Taranto is a star mate.

Taranto is a 3rd year player who had 38 games under his belt prior to 2019, Worps was a 2nd year player who'd played 11 games and still matched or beat him in pretty much every measure.

Timmy lead the Gary Ayres medal before Dusty won his second Norm.
Won the best and fairest in a team that made a grand final.
All while 'competing' against the likes of Josh Kelly, Stephen Coniglio, Lachie Whitfield, Jeremy Cameron etc etc.

I love the Worpedo and I absolutely wouldn't trade him for Taranto, but if you aren't a Hawks or Giants fan and you are asked who you'd prefer in your side, I'd say 9 out of 10 would choose Taranto right now. My love for Worps doesn't make me blind to that fact.

They keep getting cooked players for 4th round picks. You'd hope one has a good season left in their career. Those stars did very little they were carried this year by an ex falcons captain who failed the personality test

Ahh yes.

Stats matter when talking up Worpel but not when talking down Cyril.

I wonder why that is...

Is that a fist pump or a dik pump?

Well on those stats Rioli was rated very highly on those player ratings. Was number 5 at one stage

Scrimshaw is one of those you refer to. Kid is a jet.

Scully performed above expectation considering how much footy he missed.

Let's see with Patton.

He could have had one this year, and possibly two next year if he'd not held on so tightly to a want away player with groin issues. He's so obsessed with 'winning' (except the finals kind obviously) that I wouldn't put it past him to gather up his later picks and put a bid in on Finn to try to force us to use our first rounder on him. I think we're pretty safe though, isn't Finn an inside midfielder? Dodoro is allergic to them right?

Depends if Dodo's love for half back flankers is greater than his love of a fist pump?

Puopolo re signed. The above totalled 17 games for 2019

Thread is quiet I suppose no holes to pick in 2019 trading
