Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft?

Tough call

Really? Gunston and Breust are All-Australians and are arguably the two best players in the league for their respective positions. Add Wingard into that mix too as another All-Australian selection and it’s not even close.

Hawthorn are a middle of the road old team with limited prospects.

They haven't won a final since 2015.

So this year, if the trend continues it will be 6 years in a row without winning finals.

Combine this with an ageing list, with limited star power, and add a strategy of high risk veteran injured players = trouble.

Hawthorn are much more likely to finish in the bottom 4, than the top 4.

Making the finals is possible, but it will be a long, long time until Hawthorn will be truly relevant again.

‘it would have to be a long long time to be as bad as Brisbane Richmond Collingwood for premiers and almost any other team in terms of time between drinks

Gunston and bruest are the best 2 players in the comp for their positions?

You have to be joking ?

Gee whiz putting your balls on the line with all those scenarios.

Bit harsh thought that Breust was very good last year with the opportunities presented and Gunston wasn’t the same, had some injury issues.

Let’s see how they go this year with a better mid field and tall timber around them.
They are good solid players no doubt

But the best in comp for their position is a leap

They probably were 3 or so years back

not now

They’re only 28 and 29 respectively and are still consistent players. They’ll bounce back now that Patton, Lewis and Wingard will play a full season.

1. Gunston
2. Darling
3. Lynch (Adelaide)
4. Stringer
5. Membrey

Nope, not joking. One player has kicked 50+ goals four times while the others players haven’t even come close. Darling’s only done it once.

Wouldn’t even expect a Richmond supporter to know anyway. You probably think Caddy is a better player than Gunston and Castagna is better than Breust.

Darling is a key forward. Was the best key forward in the comp in 2018 (AA lock until injury) and was one of the best last year.

He doesn't belong in a conversation about best third tall or best half forward or whatever the Chris Tarrant award is called now.

Tough call

It'd be a split decision on points. If I could pick any of the 12 players I listed it would be Naughton. Contested marking beast and kicked 32 goals in his first season as a forward at the ripe old age of 20. Breust and Gunston the only proven quality players over a long period. Gunston will kick 50 with his eyes closed if they have a good year, iffy if they don't. Lewis a raw talent and O'Brien mostly s**t, but then he finished last year with 12 goals in 5 games after I'm pretty sure some of his own fans had him on the de-list pile.

Bruce a pretty solid forward target but doesn't have a high ceiling. Good marking target and I'd expect him to kick 30-40 goals. Lloyd surprisingly good last year. Dale like O'Brien kicked 20 goals in 6 games out of nowhere so could be a player. Schache not sold on, doesn't take enough marks for a big guy and is always out of the side. Has talent though. Puopolo and Dickson both close to the end, Puopolo a career pest and Dickson makes Breust look like Richo in front of the sticks. 181.61 is insane.

Edit: forgot Patton. Not really sure what to expect given his lack of footy. Needs a run at it.
