After heading off to Waverley tonight to see the Sandringham vs St Kilda qualifying final, I was quietly confident that the saints would get up despite the zebras finishing on top of the ladder.

But yes, we lost by ONE point.

When it is not your year, it really is not your year!

After hitting the lead courtesy of a great solo effort by Freddie Campbell at the 26 minute mark, it looked almost over. Particularly when Sam Cranage kicked a point to put us 6 points in front two minutes later. Of course, despite only 5 goals being kicked for the entire quarter, (much like the Bledisloe Cup match that went forever) the quarter went well over 30 minutes and ended with a contentious (to put it kindly) holding the man free kick to Ben Beams right in their goal square, giving Sandy the match.

While the skill level was poor all night, it was great to see a crowd of at least 4000 supporting the VFL competition. Has anyone else been impressed with the standard of the competition? It is a clear step above the former VFL/VFA competition.

In case anyone is interested, Sandringham and North Ballarat go through to the preliminary finals while Williamstown play Carlton and Geelong play St Kilda in the semi finals. Box Hill Hawks and Springvale were eliminated.

Don't worry Sainter, at least you are still in the finals! Next week, Geelong will know if their Seniors are still in the AFL finals, so they will have something to play for, win or lose. Meanwhile, the Saints will be looking to impress any potential coaches, and Tim Watson is around the place as well. Did you see him last night? Or did he stay away from the spotlight?

I have been impressed with the new comp. It has surprised a lot of people.

Did you read the topic about/Have you been to the new Official Football Victoria/VFL web-site yet?

http://www.footballvic.com.au

Read the article from the VFL Record in the What's New section of the VFL site. It talks about how the competition has improved. I think the strong VFA clubs have lifted.

Thanks Doug,

Tim was in the coaches box last night but Peter Banfield was quite rightfully coaching the team and has done a superb job with our seconds side over the past few years. I think it is good for Tim to remain involved with the VFL campaign because he has done a very good job with assisting Banfield in developing a lot of good youngsters.

One of his greatest achievements has been giving Barry Hall the self belief to take the next step from good player to great player. He has taught him how to use controlled aggression.

Apparently we have 9 players eligible from our side that played against the kangaroos to play against the cats on Sunday.

The standard has been much better this year. I know it is becoming a common phrase by coaches but it is great for young draftees to get the experience of playing against grown men rather than against other kids. This is the best way for them to develop into good players themselves.

And the new footballvic is very good. I like the TAC Cup section too. Good job!

Not your year Sainter? What do you mean?

Keep Positive.

You got within 1 point of knocking off the team who has dominated the entire VFL season. I'd be very proud of your performance given the fact it was a dubious free kick that cost you the match.

Now it's the Cats, a team you knocked off by close to 100 points last time you met them.

See you on Sunday.
