How will we beat the Blues? For Kouta's matchup I think Colby should get first crack. With Whitnall out...Micky might start on the bench as Carlton have a lot of runners that need to be stopped. Simmo should blanket Ratten, if he can we'll win easy. I think Corey, the King and Sav will provide too many targets for Carlton to cover. With Kingy, Grant and Harves chipping in for a few goals I think we are capable of really lauching ourseleves with this game.

Will Wayne play? Or should he be rested?

I would suggest a bit of cat and mouse with the match ups at the start.
Starting the game with Rocca, McKernan, Carey and L.Smith up forward may seem top heavy BUT would stretch the Carlton defence to such an extent, that it make drag Koutoufides into the backline to give them the extra tall defender they require.
Their tall defensive options are normally Silvagni and Manton, and others filling the place on a rotational basis dependant on their specific opponents. Other "tall" options include Hotton (193 cm, 79 kg), Christou (190,90), Beaumont (188,85) and Massie(188,84). These players all give away a lot in size to our blokes, so playing 4 talls in the forward line might draw Koutoufides into lining up on Carey. I doubt this theory will be used, though. :(
Using Colbert or Archer instead of 4 bigger players DOES add mobility and flexibility to an extent, but then you lose the sheer size advantage asthose two could be matched up by bit-part defenders.

Burton should nullify Porter at the centre bounces, but is a little suspect around the ground (at throw ins), and maybe Rocca could do the boundary line work. This would either cause Hotton to follow him around the ground, or cause Porter to leave Burton unmanned while making ground to get to a throw in.

If Koutoufides is used in a midfield role, Blakey or Cochrane will get first crack. if he is used in the forward line, expect Colbert to get the job.

Possibilities for the starting positions :

B : McCartney Martyn Motlop
F : Beaumont Whitnall Houlihan

HB : Blakey Colbert King
HF : Hickmott Koutoufides Lappin

C : Cochrane Grant Clayton
C : Bradley Ratten Camporeale

HF : Pickett McKernan Harvey
HB : McKay Manton Franchina

F : Archer Carey Rocca
B : Christou Silvagni Hotton

R : Burton Simpson Stevens
R : Porter Freeborn Hulme

IC : Sinclair Rawlings McLaren L.Smith
IC : Mansfield Doering Massie Fevola

This is all presuming we make one change (Carey returning probably at the expense of Petrie), and using the same 22 Carlton named last week.

This game will really show us where there at. If we can get away to a flyer and hold back the koutas, campo's etc, we should give it a red hot go. I feel it will be a game with many swiths of momentum and theres no doubt when we have it we can get the score on the board. Its just if we can hold them down,

Go roos

Nice one Darky. Your matchups make a lot of sense. I'm not sure if Lindsay will keep his place though. I think he might drop back instead of Petrie. I'd love to see him stay up, from all reports I've heard (haven't seen him play yet) he sounds like he's gonna be a champion....

I think Lindsay will keep his spot and Petrie may have a run in the Muzza's.

Lindsay was putting his all into training last night when matched up on Petrie in the scratch match.

Anyway, I'm sure whichever one plays, they'll do well.

Darky, who would you line up on Houlihan if Motlop goes?

Rawlings to run close with him, or King to get on his nerves early. Houlihan has to be shut out early because he has a habit of kicking goals in the first quarter, and kicking 2-3 goals in 5-10 minute bursts.
Rawlings might be the better player to stay with him closely to prevent the bursts of goals, but King would be just as good an option, to intimidate and unsettle Houlihan and put him off his game before he has an impact.

If King gets the job, I would bring Spaull into the side to replace Motlop, and re-arrange them like this :

B : McCartney Martyn King
F : Beaumont Whitnall Houlihan

HB : Spaull Colbert Blakey
HF : Hickmott Koutoufides Lappin

This thread brings back memories of how good BF used to be.

How do we beat the blues?

I think we should:

  • Rebuild the team
  • Get a new coach
  • increase membership
  • elect a shinboner spirited board
  • decide should we stay or should we go now
  • see some concrete sign of the redevelopment going up
  • plenty of excercise, good diet and carefully managed prescripted anti-depressants
  • win at least 6 games for the season
  • pray and say the rosary many times a day

What is the name of the CUB CEO and is'nt he a made North Fan? T

his is always the problem/strength of our supporters - they are all average joes. My son's best mate is a mad Carlton fan and his Dad is in the Carltonians so I have been to a couple of their functions - there are about fifty members of that Couterie who could get the Blues out of trouble with their beer money!!!

Yep...
I'd even go further back and see who remembers the old North forum on the old club website?

You are an ornament to the modern game, TOD. Don't take our nostalgia personally.

I do miss Darky, Briedis and Malibu - and Daphne, Carlos, Tashibatts and plenty of others who seem to have moved on to a better place. (Which reminds me, where is Shinners these days?)
