How can we obtain 2 first round selections for next year's draft? The reason I ask is because it is being said that it will be a very strong draft and therefore being able to take 2 first round selections would be sweet.

The problem is would we be willing to give something decent away in order to obtain that second pick? I really would love for us to grab a gun inside mid and another very talented player (pos shouldn't really matter preferably another gun mid)

If we want to have a dynasty where we are constantly challenging for premierships for about 5 years like the Cats, then we need to get in some really talented mids to replace the likes of Judd and Simpson because they will leave huge holes in the team when they retire especially Judd.

We've got 'experienced' youth in our forward line and back line along with some youngsters that have decent potential to fill in with Mitchell, McCarthy, McInnes, Bootsma, Rowe and Watson and our ruck stocks are also very strong so IMO we need to get some really talented gun mids in especially an inside mid.

So would you be for or against us giving something decent away in order to achieve this and if so how could we do it without trading away one of our untouchables? Or do you simply think this whole thing is a bad idea?

Ok.

So we already have 1.

What you want to do is trade away a player for a pick in the top 18 of next years draft which is considered very strong.

We would need to give up something very potent, most likely a player who is considered very talented.

So for a very talented young player you would give up a very talented senior player.

Right in the middle of our premiership window which starts next year...

You make some good points tanks and i agree while our midfield looks good i think ideally we need to add some A grade youngsters .
Im hoping Yarran , Lucas , and Tuohy can take roles in the midfield this year and in time Bootsma and Buckley ???
Its a balancing act for the MC between shooting for a flag starting 2012 and trying to keep A grade talent coming in ???
As we know 1st round picks dont come cheap and with our ladder position these days the only way to secure these picks is to trade away quality players .
I think the list is in pretty good shape , we drafted Rowe this year to buy Mitchell some time and along with Watson and McCarthy we have good depth in the big man department .
Next year's draft should be simply best available mid at every pick , as you say , Judd , Simpson and Scotland wont be around forever .

I think you'll find it will be all about the uncontracted players next season for the Blue boys...

Free Agency will be the buzz term around Visy Park!!

We'd have to give up something good. This is not a trade-XXX post, rather a hypothetical. Let's talk Fremantle...

Paul Bower, finally over the injuries, reinvents himself as a running half-back. Alongside Jamison and Henderson, freed of playing KPP, he returns to career best form. (He was close to being delisted, I can dream can't I?)

With Watson and McCarthy then (2013) entering their third seasons, Bower's departure would benefit all parties. We get a pick, Freo get a defender and PB gets a fat contract in his home state. Pick #20 in 2005 vs pick #20 in 2011 with a 24yo monster defender.

Good hindsight. There will probably be guys requesting a trade by this time due to our strong list and high number of quality established players no doubt someone won't be getting a game, perhaps a ruckman. Appart from tanking which is no option i don't see an opening for us to get right into the first round.

ouch. That hurt then and it still hurts now. :(

But I do like the premise behind the OP, that we need to plan for a dynasty and not just a premierhip/s while Judd is playing.
Just doesn't seem like it will happen, we will have one pick inside the 1st round, but as we all know to get quality you go to give quality. Unless your trading with Brisbane, anything can happen then.

We could always trade Brock McLean for pick 12... oh no wait.

The McLean trade is always going to haunt us isnt it?

Look it may have turned out to be a lemon of a trade in hindsight, but at the time we all knew what the club was trying to acheive.

Just playing devils advocate... Not all first round draft picks turn out to be stars as we know anyway. Who ever we drafted may have also turned out to be a lemon

Guess that just the way trading goes though doesn't it...you win some you loose some. Maybe Voss will be interested in McLean :)

As bad as the McLean trade for pick 11 was...it was that same trade week that we were able to dump Fevola and #27 for Henderson and #12 (Kane Lucas).

God bless Michael Voss - we'll start an appreciation thread about him one day.

Yes, we didn't do too badly out that. To be honest, I thought Vossy didn't support us any more. I will remain unsure for at least another year.

One thing we REALLY dodged that year was a certain ex - Brisbane forward with chronic knee issues. I was very disappointed when he chose to go to Sydney instead of us. However, it was a real blessing!

Can't see us parting with anyone, unless a trade is demanded, as for obtaining a second first round pick, the only real scenario I could see happening is GWS having a dip at our rock stocks which is why the club may have secured hammer for 3 years so we have slightly more leverage if a trade was to suffice, unlike the sauce deal. Never the less I don't see us putting anyone up

as most have pointed out, you'll need to give something very good to get a first rounder next year, and, it just doesn't suit where you're at, you're in a window, today is currently more important than tomorrow, compo pick would be the only way IMO.

I know it is a long term project but seriously all the concessions in the world and if managed correctly with a bit of luck, all the premierships in the world will not gain success in rugby league heartland.

The AFL should have done their research better ... the people that live their are complete block heads ... they have no ability to appreciate any other sport than rugby league. We take it for granted as Melbournians that all sports have a place in the Australian scenery and will go to see them whilst still remaining loyal to the AFL .... GWS people are totally closed minded.

This will be a fail of epic proportions and should never have happened.

Gold Coast I can agree with but the GWS is just a trainwreck waiting to happen!

I wish no one had invented the term 'Premiership Window'. It has now become patented just like 'Road Rage'.
What's worse is the over use of the word 'dynasty' and the term 'moneyball'. As soon as any team wins the Grand Final ie Collingwood last year, everyone starts harping on about a dynasty. And this draft period everyone thought they were so clever talking about moneyball picks. FFS, can't stand fad terms.
