Can we start a campaign to get AFL off Foxtel?

for exclusive streaming rights? or just broadcast rights? There is no reason why the AFL can't do what other sports around the world have done and auction of broadcast rights (TV) and streaming rights (internet) as seperate packages. As with everything else the AFL is behind what every other sport is doing, and once they catch up, we will all be the better for it.

They do exactly the same as every other sport. Other sports have a bigger market and more games so games that aren't available in your area on cable or fta can be streamed. The nba games shown on espn for example can't be streamed in the US. You need pay tv to watch all the games. Since every game is on Foxtel theres no need to have a streaming service as it couldn't show any games Australia.

Foxtel paid a fortune because you can't stream on a screen bigger than 7 inches, if the AFL wants to compete directly with Foxtel they are going to only pay a fraction of what they do now if anything at all.

$600 a year really isn't that much if you love your footy, plus you get some decent channels on the side as well. Don't complain about FTA if you don't want to spend to upgrade.
600 a year is a disgrace.

For 200 (it might be less actually) I can watch about 1230+ games of NBA with their streaming subscription. In crisp HD with the ability to watch games live or on demand, plus I can choose the commentary team I listen to and I can watch the NBA's own channel.

It's hilarious how naive so many footy fans are when it comes to value for money. Foxtel isn't value for money. You're paying 600 odd for not even half the amount of games, plus a bunch of junk channels that are total s**t these days when you can use the internet illegally or legally to stream shows whenever the hell you want.

Foxtel is garbage and it pisses me off you have to throw money their way to watch footy.

I'm a uni student who looks for value for money everywhere and it's impossible to justify paying so much a year just for football.

Everyone on here defending Foxtel seems to think that the detractors are all grown adults living on their own on a decent income. It's not the case.

Haha licking boots? No i just expect to pay for entertainment such as every sport code and competition and not expect it for free.

I dont want to watch that crap and dont.
I watch the quality sport and the discovery turbo stuff. All well worth what they are asking for. The rest is just padding.

You have a reasonable streamining service. AFL live, hell even Foxtel Go.

What you want is either a free service or a 10 dollar netflix service.
You really think you would get all that sport for 10 dollars considering production costs and rights value etc? Lol.

That's not what people are saying at all. You're just completely ignoring people's points.

Forget about Netflix. Except for the EPL most other sports overseas offer a reasonable streaming service that are affordable and quality. They're not 10 dollars a month like Netflix. No idea why you keep bringing up Netflix anyway. People were bringing up Netflix originally to compare it to the waste of time entertainment channels are on Foxtel.

It really isn't that much to ask for the AFL to offer a decent streaming service instead of forcing us to pay money for s**t we don't want just to get AFL. Live Pass is a joke. Not in HD, you can't watch it on any reasonable sized screen and you have little to no control over playing, pausing, rewinding etc. Foxtel Go is a piece of crap too.

Good for you. You can afford to chuck away 50 a month. Maybe have some understanding and realise that there's footy fans out there that cannot financially justify paying 50 dollars a month to watch a game they're passionate about.

You and others sticking up for the AFL turning into a money driven game is disgusting.

It isn't like going to the footy is a better alternative either. These days you pay big bucks for a membership and have to pay extra just to get a decent seat. Want to take a few mates or family members? Bye bye more money.

And no, I do not want everything for free.

And? The providers/streamers here dont have to produce anything.
They are all premade elsewhere and they get it cheaper because its sold world wide.

Im sure it is possible to only sell Foxfooty but;
The tv deal would plummet downwards though as our population is not large and theres almost no international presence to onsell to for $$

They'd double their viewers. Instantly.

It's actually been estimated that if ESPN went standalone in the US they would have to charge $30 plus a month to cover costs. It's a major reason why very few have gone the exclusive streaming route. No one is really confident in the numbers to know what to charge without losing huge dollars.

.

How? Ive answered each point when my post has been qouted. As i will now.

.

So how much are they?

People do bring up netflix and stan. Often. Yet they arent Oz only so have a much much larger customer base to draw funds from.

Those sports you are qouting are in places with qoudruple the population.

But what figure do you think is fair?

.

So you want to stream an AFL only service straight to your tv under cutting the tv deal.

Wont happen.

Small popularion base to start with, without the international appeal of other sports. So the cost would probably still be around 40 60 dollars a month to cover that plus production.

Good for you. You can afford to chuck away 50 a month. Maybe have some understanding and realise that there's footy fans out there that cannot financially justify paying 50 dollars a month to watch a game they're passionate about.
.

Chuck away? Hardly

But i thought you said that you dont want it free. You are now complaining about paying.

Which is it?

Now before you say 10 or 20 dollars please see my comment above this one.

You and others sticking up for the AFL turning into a money driven game is disgusting.
.

Yawn. People get paid for their services. Get over it.

Im sure you get paid for your services to.

Never mind, just noticed your a uni student. So you have either the government or parents paying your way.

It isn't like going to the footy is a better alternative either. These days you pay big bucks for a membership and have to pay extra just to get a decent seat. Want to take a few mates or family members? Bye bye more money.
.

You really dont want to pay for things do you?

It really isnt big bucks for memberships (except for probably the WA teams who are selling theirs out. A guess there)

And no, I do not want everything for free.

And yet most your post is complaining about paying.
Paying for tv, paying memberships, paying to go to games.

So what is a fair price for a footy only streaming device to your tv.
Taking into account that it would need to cover the tv deal and production costs of all games.

Nice. Except even if they did (which is a stretch) its less than half of the original cost so they would lose money. Allot.

All they've got to do is demand less. Allow the AFL app to be streamed properly. The price margin is small enough that most people would still choose fox footy.

Fox wont pay what they are now if people can stream a direct service to the tvs. Especially if fox are the ones paying for the production of the programs.

Will there be Netflix cameras at the grounds when 7 or foxtel don't think a game is worth broadcasting and Netflix has committed to all games every week?

Would foxtel even sell their production to Netflix to be streamed online for a price that allows them to offer their package cheap?

I expect fox sports costs a big chunk of the foxtel production budget, plus the $250,000,000 to even get access to create it means they start a fair way back from breaking even. They can't afford to on sell streaming licences for $2.5 per user to Netflix.

Our infrastructure prevents streaming services from being the future in Australia, thanks to the lovely Mr. Turnbull.

We are stuck with cable.

It's a shame, if steaming was more practical and bandwidth affordable we'd probably even be able to stream VFL games in the not to distant future. Pity.

This is the way entertainment is going by the looks. Netflix, on demand movie services, even concerts where you can stream a show live for a price are now the way of doing business - we are all busy and lazy and don't want to leave or houses.

You can't watch every NBA game for less than $100aud a month in the USA.

You can here because it's not a key market.

Just like you can stream all afl games in Germany.

There's a pretty simple solution to your crazy dilemma - don't pay for Foxtel and stop complaining because you're a tight ass.

I'm a uni student who looks for value for money everywhere and it's impossible to justify paying so much a year just for football.

& all is revealed...when you actually make your way to the real world, the subtleties of issues such as pay tv subscriptions & what each individual gets out of one might finally make sense to you. Until then, enjoy your cocoon:p

So?

The USA has commercialised their sport something terrible. That's my very point. I hate where the AFL is heading.

I think people are ignoring a pretty key thing. In the past as a Victorian fan you could go and watch your team almost every week. Didn't matter if they were on TV or not. Now with 18 sides there's way more travel and more of a chance of your team not being on TV. The footy certainly hasn't gotten more affordable to attend either.

I'm not a tight arse. I'm a uni student on a budget.

Great to see the care factor so many have here in this thread for those on smaller budgets.
So you want Foxtel paying customers to stop watching footy they're rightfully entitled to pay for just so FTA viewers can feel better about themselves? I get people are on budgets, but the way non-Foxtel payers act as if they're immediately superior is laughable. You have no right to complain about other people's financial decisions.

You said for $200 you can watch every game of the NBA, the AFL should do that to. The AFL does exactly what the NBA and every other sport in the world does.

Who exactly should take a huge pay cut so can pay even less than what is already the best value sporting league in the world ?

Never said that at all.

Just find it absurd how quick some on here are to jump in and defend a scummy corporation that has a monopoly on cable TV.

Then I think the quick solution is to simply not pay Foxtel a penny. I don't see what you're complaining about if you're not subscribed.

That's not a solution at all.

I have a right to complain that there's literally only one option to watch all of the footy on TV in this country. There's not even a competitor in the pay TV market for *s sake.

Choose one of the eighty pubs within your local area. Every single one has Foxtel. Pay for the online subscription, go to the games. There are so many alternative options.
