Hard to get a good take on Russian strategy in the Kerch Straight. Possibly trying to consolidate their gains before the new Congress comes together in 2019. If this results in Congress gifting the Ukrainian navy seven Perry-class Frigates to patrol the Azov and Black Sea, would appear counterproductive. The Ukrainian parliament has issued a 30 day declaration of martial law in areas neighbouring the Russian border, really the Russo-Ukrainian areas of Ukraine - Vinnytsia, Luhansk, Mykolaiv, Odessa, Sumy, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Kherson, Donetsk, Zaporizhia, and the inland waters of the Azov-Kerch water area. Includes some of the most heavily populated regions of Ukraine and largest cities like Kharkiv. They're either trying to create an issue through antagonising some of their population or they anticipate an escalation of the war between now and the new year so it's a pretty big deal. The latter is much more likely considering the support for the nationalist movement in places like Kharkiv.

What are your thoughts on how this might play out smokingjacket .I been way too busy to follow this story recently, but do you think Russia is at fault?
Hard to know who to believe in these situations until all the evidence is on the table. Both have motive tbh. The Ukrainians are adamant that they warned the Russian Navy in advance that they were coming through the straight at that time and the Russians are claiming they have categorical proof that the Ukrainians did this as a provocation. Poroshenko has diabolical polling numbers, something like 8% and his martial law bill was on the table when this happened. Not to mention the fact that the US had offered the gift of 7 old US naval vessels, this incident serves a few purposes on the Ukrainian side. Saying that, it seems like every time recently that people have assumed Russia wouldn't do something as a rational actor, the evidence has ended up showing they did do said thing. It's possible the Russians really are planning a winter escalation of the war to try and seize further territory before the new Congress is settled which will be extremely anti-Russian because of the 2016 election hysteria, the Mueller investigation will come out at some point in the next two years and all the cable channels will be dredging up the Russian meddling stories.

Russia had a shitload more territory 80 years ago. Despite fighting with the allies and being on the winning side they lost a lot of territory somehow.

What territory did the Soviet Union have prior to WW2 that they didn't after 1945?

The half of Poland they invaded with the Nazis?

Fu*** me. Its propoganda. And you are falling for it.

what are you saying happened?

that Russia and Trump colluded and over two years of investigations and 500 people interviewed couldn't prove anything

and you believe CNN?

you're into conspiracy theories mate!

how could it be propaganda?

Heres a tip. If the piece starts off by ridiculing its opponents using video editing to make them repeat words in a stupid way its propoganda.
here's a tip

they did it that many times lol

they were that many times false on media..

that's the very definition of propaganda !

in case you had no idea what propaganda really is

Read good book recently called Prisoners of Geography. It made much of the lack of warm water ports.
Russia actually doesn't need ports the same way as other nations do
it doesn't really need aircraft carriers for instance

if you look at a map.. it's one massive aircraft carrier

it's not a country that ventures too far away from its own sphere of influence though ii will support its friends and allies! ( that's where it gets tricky!

it does have long range tech to help it on those occasions!

Russia will always stay as compact as it can and will send soldiers further away and support them with subs and long range missiles

ships are very, very vulnerable these days wth the kinds of weaponry available

a Russian sunburn missile would sink an aircraft carrier very easily

Making fun of conspiracy theorists isn't propaganda.

Or is it only propaganda because it's left-leaning people that are being made fun of?

So? I say lots of words alot over a long period of time. Maybe if it was repeating a whole sentence many times it would be funny. But a single word. Thats stupid and done to demean without any actual insight to justify it. Only unintelligent people would think repeating a single word over 100s of shows is insightful. Then ofcourse there is the complete bias in the story. Never once discussing the numerous justifiable reasons why an investigation is warranted nor the fact it was implemented by the republicans, strongly supported by republicans in congress and run by a republican. Nor the fact that the summary of report doesnt even exonerate Trump. These points are just completely ignored. Its propoganda. Plain and simple. I pity people who fall for it. You have failed basic critical reasoning.

.
At least we know how to spell propaganda ?
Historian Robert Ensor explains that "Hitler...puts no limit on what can be done by propaganda; people will believe anything, provided they are told it often enough and emphatically enough, and that contradicters are either silenced or smothered in calumny."[
