The True North head West

The Winnipeg True North and Manitoba North Stars are no more.

Just over 24 hours after the final siren went in Can-Am Bowl 5 the owners of the teams have announced a new location and names for the two teams that compete in the Canadian-American Premiership and Can-Am 2.

"The decision was made in the weeks leading towards the Can-Am playoffs that if the team once again failed to provide a Can-Am Bowl appearance we would be relocating the team" a spokesman for the franchise said "We have wanted to move the team to British Columbia for several years but have not had the opportunity to do so as a franchise has been located there, but the opportunity to move there opened up and with another unsuccessful season we finally pulled the pin."

"We had a fairly strong feeling that this season again was going to fall short, especially with the strength of Seattle and Chicago so we began the relocation and rebranding process several weeks ago. This included some teasers through imagery, graphics, and text. We would like to thank those who assisted in this process including our partner MSG brand NAFL team the Wellington Seawolves who allowed us to place our new teams logos in one of their promos which happened to show the digital orca statue in Vancouver."

The franchise has unveiled two new brands with the Canadian-American Premiership team now being located in Vancouver and taking the name the Vancouver Valhallan, and the Can-Am 2 team moving to the capital of British Columbia Victoria, and being named the Victoria Stags.

"We chose the names to represent the strength that we want our teams to present, Valhalla in the old Norse religion is the hall of the warriors who have given their lives in battle and we want our players to show the same strength and bravery on the field that those legendary warriors did. Further to this the Stag named Eikþyrnir stands upon Valhalla, and from his antlers provides the waters for all the rivers of the world. The Can-Am 2 is where all teams create their future stars so we felt the analogy was fitting for our new team with the players from the Stags flowing on to the Vahallan."

The franchise has released two versions of their teams logos, one for light backgrounds and one for dark (provided below).

The Vahallan and Stags will officially debut in the 2020 Canadian-American Premiership season.

Makos Sports Group
Official Statement

In the early hours of this morning (Australian Eastern Standard Time) the Makos Sports Group received communication about a possible conflict between the recently unveiled Vancouver Valhallan logo and another logo from a team based in Australia over the use of the Norse symbol the Valknut. This symbol in the Valhallan logo represents the transition of the team towards victory.

Following this communication our legal team received communication of possible legal action from an organisation named SchwabiSport. This communication did appear to be fraudulent, but no definitive proof could be found to prove this fact apart from the organisations spelling of their name.

With that, even though the two teams do not participate in the same league, let alone the same sport, and the possible legal action appears to be likely fraudulent, our legal team have advised us that it would be in everyone's best interest that we modify the Valhallan logo to avoid any further issues. The Valknut has been removed from the logo and in its place are the representation of the North Shore Mountains that are the backdrop to the city of Vancouver.

We will not be making any further comment on this issue.

The new logo appears below.

I didn't actually mind at all the use of the logo, but this certainly looks a lot better! Excited for this move!
My legal counsel will be in touch with the MSG over your violation of our intellectual property - we will not hesitate to file a civil claim in the Supreme Court of Victoria if you do not cease operations in CAN-AM entirely.

I knew that. I was never 100% happy with that part of the design, so this gave me the opportunity to find something better.

Our legal team has been in contact with the Norse Council of Victoria in Australia over the use of an ancient symbol of their ancestors. They were unaware of the Raiders using it and have expressed dissatisfaction at this. They should be in contact shortly.
