Canberra Cannons Broke

OUCH!!

I feel for Devo and the rest of the Cannons fans.

Questions must be asked, particularly why, if they were in debt, they still bought three imports.

Interesting times ahead.

I must be a jinx.

Fiorentina folded, Carlisle almost followed suit, North Melbourne, Ross County, Aberdeen and Deportivo La Coruna are all in heavy debt.

This is a bit of blow, as the Cannons were looking good for a top 4 finish this season. The crowds had doubled, interest in the media and the general public appeared to be on the improve, and then... Whammo.

At least we still have the Capitals. Abrams looks a whole lot better than CJ anyway:D

Friend of mine used to be a gun player (for a Melb club - 2 rings) in the late 80s/early 90s when the game was at its peak. Reckons he was earning more then than the guns are getting paid now.

Game is in deep crap as a professional sport here.

Sad when a founding team carks it. The NBL is screwed, about 3 teams operate on a profit and I fear the Cannons won't be the last one to die within the next cople of seasons

Talk is the Cannons could be back as early as next weekend. Three Canberra businessmen have put in around $200,000 yesterday to keep them afloat until the end of January. Cal is currently in Sydney trying to raise anothe $200,000 to keep them in until the end of the season.

Still it looks like this is the end for the Cannons.

It seems to be the way it's going these days for 2nd-tier sports in Australia. I fear it may not be long before comps revert back to state-based and are not run for profit.

The NBl has sold our licence to the Kiwi's. The f***in' c***s. The NBL can go to hell.

Rumour has too, that Cal Bruton has resigned as the Cannons coach.

The End.

Real shame.

No professional sports league can survive in Australia, the country is just too small, population wise. Basketball is hanging on but surely it wont be long and soccer is pathetic. I hope the Glory can win this season because the NSL doesnt have too many seasons left.

As for the AFL...well we all know how many teams are struggling.

Cal Bruton and players are f****in legends.

They saw off the Kiwi deal, and it looks like the Cannons will be staying in Canberra. The Kiwi's tried every trick in the book, including some dirty tactics to get the licence, but failed. Sunday morning they had announced that 5 Cannons players had agreed to terms with them, yet every player stated publically that they had not. Yesterday the Kiwi's and the NBL arranged a meeting with players, officials and adminstrators to push forward the deal. In the end with the help of the other clubs, the Kiwi's were kicked out, and the adminisrator resigned. It now looks as if Cal's will become joint owner of the Cannons, and possibly with .... wait for it.... wait for it....

EARVIN "MAGIC" JOHNSON.

Cal had talks with Mr. Johnson over the weekend, and Mr Johnson had asked to kept informed and will assist where possible. This is still very much a dream, and probably a far fetched dream at that, but I live in hope.

Also all Cannons games have been put back until January 8, so they can finilise the deal and roster. Pero has already left and joined the Giants, Dave Thomas flew back to Canada yesterday, but Cal is trying to talk him into returning after Christmas. Poole and Chappell were to fly out today, but are now staying.

What a week. Reports have been changing every half hour, no one was really sure what was going on, but in the middle of it, standing tall, was the shortest man in NBL history (probably not, but it sounded good), was Cal Bruton. He kept the players, media and fans informed with whats happening, and became the face of the Cannons push to remain in Canberra. In his 10-15 years as a player, his only association with the Cannons was as an opponent, a well liked and respected opponent, but the "enemy" nonetheless. But over the last couple of seasons, and especially the last week, he has become a hero for all Canberra's basketball fans. He has fought hard and I really hope he wins the battle.

Cal Bruton is legend.

Beware the wounded bull (Cannon).

Ahhh the sheltered man. :D I have known that Cal Bruton is a legend for years.....being a Wildcats fan, of course.

I have the pleasure of knowing him personally :) Im not saying we are best mates or he calls me when he is town or anything like that but if I bump into him he knows who I am and we have a chat :) Pretty proud to know such a great guy.

Cant believe he has spoken to the Magic man about the Cannons. Would be great to get Magic involved in Australian Basketball.

Go the Cannon's. An original and I really hope they can continue on, especially because of the surprising year they are having. If anyone can save the Cannons though....it is Bruton!
