Canberra Training Report Wednesday 17th

It's interesting that there have been some constant themes in all the training reports:

Meesens great PS efforts, Stiffy's .....well let's just agree with Macca23 that he'll be back in defence again, Goodwins injury which is preventing him from a full PS.

Disappointing that Gill has been running and continues to run laps ....Would have thought he was reasonably fit, he's certainly athletic and IMO would have really benefitted from a lot of ball/skill work??

Didnt Gill have a lot of shoulder problems in 07? Maybe they are easing him back until they are right?

Archard and Campbell are training with the main group????

Does this perhaps indicate that the AFC want to have the option to use Gill as a mobile ruck rover??? hence the need to get his fitness up to a better level than his normal forward position would require.

Could see him in an Adam Goodes type roll as an alternative plan if Meesen/Maric/Hudson falter ....an insurance strategy?

or another option is that he is closer to playing an afl game this season than possibly archard or campbell so the club want him as fit as possible to be available for selection? I remember Craig talking about Vince being selected when he fitness wise was not ready for AFL but did show that there was potential of an afl player there and the injuries we had meant that he was being selected too early. Could the club be taking this into account in changing the way they manage their new draftees, especially those that are mature age?

WW, the gap between SANFL and AFL fitness under Craig has become massive.

I remember Huddo's and Dabrowki's first pre-season with us - these 2 could not keep up no matter what the exercise was. As the training sessions went on they lagged further and further behind, both wishing they could die by the looks of it.

The way Gill is being treated is super-smart IMO. Craigy is concentrating on closing that fitness gap ASAP so that Gill will be able to compete on level terms rather than struggling his arse off. :thumbsu:

Campbell had shoulder surgery at the end of 2006 and he's training with the main group but no competitive work ....Gill is all running so I doubt the shoulder is an issue

I can only assume that Archard and Campbell as mature aged draftees were recuited to play this year with Biglands/Hentschell injured.

As they are both midfielders I would assume it was imperative to get their fitness up to AFL standard ASAP.
Again it seems to reinforce that Gill having played a KPP role at SANFL would need far more fitness improvement than Archard and campbell to play a midfield role.

I don't disagree simply saying IMO he;s being groomed for a potential on-ball role.

The impression I gained from training was that this PS was a little more low key than last season ....could we be building up a little slower given the fade out last season?
