Has everyone noticed the bagging the Lions are getting on their goal kicking?

Even the great Voss got a blast for his less than 50% conversion rate by the highbrow journal the Courier Mail.

Personally I agree & I dont think it because we all expect a 110% conversion rate as all one eyed supporters do!

I was a frustrated fan at the Demons game last year where they literally kicked themselves out of the game. To lose a game in that fashion must be almost as disheartening for the players as the fans.

Personally I think it is good to have this criticism at this time of year & hopefully some changes in form.

Go the 6 pointers!

Spot on ITB. The Lions (in the four years I've supported them), have generally always been inaccurate. This has cost them dearly on a number of occasions.

I don't know what they can do. Kicking practice perhaps? But is lack of practice a real problem - or is it just that they don't take things seriously enough?

What was the deal with that Melbourne game last year?

And you can add to that at least 7 or 8 other losses in the last two seasons due to poor kicking.

I know form has a lot to do with it, but although I dont know that stats I feel that in general the Lions are unfortunatly a less talented team when it comes to kicking than say the Roos, where people like McKernan (sometimes!) Scholl, & Carey etc kick them with monotonous regularity.

""The Lions' set-shot kicking at goal requires immediate finetuning and their overall conversion rate is running at a sub-standard 39 percent.

Of 31 set shots in their two Ansett Cup matches only 11 have registered goals.

It could easily be attributed to the wind in Wellington, the rain in Cairns or pre-season jitters.

But it happened more times than the Lions care to remember in the first half of 2000 when they failed to win consecutive matches until rounds 19 and 20.

Their goalkicking yips appear to be across the board with about a dozen players responsible for spraying the ball in the first two matches.""

I agree with both of you. This has been a problem for the Lions for quite some time. As I have queried previously, how often have the lions been beaten, but had a lot more scoring shots then the opposition?

It is very disappointing and frustrating. Lynchy seems to get a lot of the blame, although he has become a lot more straight over the last 12 months or so. But he is not the only one to blame.

Thinking back to the game against Adelaide at FP last year (I am pretty sure this is the game I am trying to refer to) Luke Power kicked several behinds from only 15 to 20m out, directly in front of goal.

This was mainly attributed to that fact that he wanted to keep handballing it to somebody who was even closer still, and unmanned, but in the end it was completely stuffed up. Trying to make the game a lot more harder then what it actually is. In fact, one of the coaches (it was either Blight or Matthews) said that the worse thing a footballer can do is think.

I mean who has ever heard of a small forward not wanting to kick a goal.

Congratulations on post #100 Brissy_lionsgal!

Lynch has becoming significantly straighter over the last year. Personally, I think not wearing pink anymore has had a great deal to do with it.

His kicking for goal has also improved dramatically in this time. At one point last season, he just stopped kicking behinds and was able to kick bags of goals each week.

I'm looking forward to another good season from Lynchy this year!

I am showing my age here. Many years ago I was at the footy with a girlfriend. We were down at Geelong.Gary Ablett got the ball, and a collective sigh went up around us.Much like when Paul Peos got the ball.Anyway, he kicked that goal. Prior to that season he was a sprayer.
He said at the time that over the summer holiday period he spent hours kicking goals. He believed the hard hours worked.Dunstall said a simialr thing.
For me, I hope our forwards are all by themselves going to their local ground and kicking a buckful of balls for an extra hour each day.
If it worked for Ablett and Dunstall, it can't hurt our guys.

Since I have followed Brisbane, we have never had a regular goal kicker. Merrett, Capper, Hardy, Lynch, White and others really haven't taken a game by the neck once. Evidence of the lack of forwards over the years is Darryl White at CHF and Merrett at FF in Mr. Ripper's side.

Heres hoping Bradshaw and Lynch can lift the profile and percentage of Brisbane forwards this year and with them lift the points and percentage of the club.

Tassie Steve

Let's forget the last 2 weeks and kick a stack of 6 pointers this week.
Let's kick the Blues all the way home.
I hope Danny and Al kick a ton this year.
And I hope Jonathon STUD MUFFIN Brown can kick a few as well. ONYA BROWNY.
Oh, and my man Beau too. YAY BEAU.
cheers...

It's really a matter professionalism and culture. If someone puts it in their head that kicking goals is their job, and that near enough is simply not good enough, then they will kick goals. Some romantics kind of think that the fact that you "just missed" is OK--"at least you tried," "I'll get it right next time." No! It's poor "workmanship" and unprofessional--pure and simple. One really gets the feeling that the Roos have got that department worked out--they just kick 'em like robots because they've internalized the fact that that's why they're getting paid.

Another factor is the number of behinds that get rushed through. Often, we get outside fifty and just bomb it in to the goal-square, where the opposition grab it and concede a behind. This happened a number of times against Carlton.

Some of the misses last night were due to players rushing , playing on and taking a ping, instead of stoping, lining up and taking a set shot. Brownie did it twice.Thats just experience or age or something.Dead eye dick when he did stop and do it though.
Also Lynch was shocking. No excuses there really.Easy shots that were misses.

Quote below from the Lions own propaganda machine. They must be worried if they even admitted it in their usually glowingly positive press releases!

""There has been plenty of focus on the Lions’ inability to convert their chances properly in front of goal during the pre-season, and they again kicked more behinds than goals against the Blues. However, Matthews pointed out there were more mitigating circumstances for the unbalanced ratio this week than there had been in previous weeks.

“We had a lot of shots from angles, and a lot rushed – we weren’t fantastic with our finishing but we weren’t kicking from point-blank range,” he said.""

Hey Lionel Lyon! Are you the same 'Lionel' that was on the Brisbane Lions Forum a year or so ago?

I'm not sure if you are, but it's good to have you on board anyway! (Check out the Roys board here too, while you're at it!).
