Capricornia league

Probably have a better indication of how things would work tonight. We had the bare group of 20 at the ground on Tuesday (18 training initially, a bad finger dislocation and hospital trip for someone ensured we'd stay within the guidelines) but expecting more tonight....and that was before the local Rugby League comp pulled the pin on the season and we've already had at least one player (contracted to the Capras no less but used to play for us as a youth player, their season was curtailed in March) indicate his intention to come down. With the bare 20 there wasn't a need to split the ground into sections or groups, but we had to rub the sanitiser into the hands prior to warm up. Think the hardest part will be to vacate the venue (not so much the ground itself, but the car park) upon finishing, usually a few hang around for about 10-15 and some for 25-30 post training just in the rooms to talk the usual garbage.

As a guide I know some clubs have spread training times as much as possible. One club has their Under 15.5s with a handful of excess 13.5's training at a nearby school and have combined their Under 17.5s with their senior group training as 2 groups on Monday and Thursday, with their women's team training Tuesday and Saturday. Other clubs have a group of 13.5's training at the same time as their 15.5's at their ground with 17.5's with the seniors (they share a ground with soccer who would get access on some other days as they've been cleared to train as well). Our club has Under 15.5's training at another venue, 13.5's starting just after 3:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the women's training on Monday and Wednesday Nights.

so no league or union then? might be handy for numbers, assuming they are trying to get 2s playing as well?

sounds like training numbers fairly typical for June

No word on Union although they've been given clearance to train from this week.

Hearing next week is when it will be released, the easy bit is lopping off 5 games (either the first or last 5 of the original draw are likely to be axed to give us 10 games), the hard bit is how to schedule 6 games through a weekend (3 youth games, 2 senior men's and a women's game), plus adding the junior (Under 7.5, 9.5 and 11.5) Friday Night games spread throughout the region (Gladstone and BITS alternate hosting weeks for their area, Yeppoon hosts themselves for I believe 5 weeks, travel to Rocky for 2 weeks, and host a Rockhampton based club for 3 weeks with each Rocky club travelling once. At the end there's a Cluster day for all teams and age groups at one venue over a Sunday). Of course there may be changes to what the regulations are in July especially in light of main venues now being allowed up to 2000 so what that means for non ticketed venues is unclear and there's generally about 100-250 people attendance at most games depending on time of day save for the odd event game like a Freeze MND day at Yeppoon (yes they have a slide) and finals. The other tricky bit also comes when teams are taking road trips (twice for Rocky/Yeppoon clubs, 4 times for the Port Curtis clubs) and where those players are allowed to go if there are limits.

Of note a number of rugby league players are basically training and possibly playing with at least the Rocky based clubs and perhaps Yeppoon (more likely at the youth level) but Gladstone's Rugby League is still to make a decision on their season and if they go ahead it may affect certainly Gladstone and perhaps a few others who are Rocky or Capricorn Coast based who may be available. The best they're hoping for are a few weekend carnivals. Don't believe we'll get anyone from other codes who at this point are definitely going ahead (soccer next month for sure, a start date for junior Union has been announced and there's one senior comp with some clubs fielding multiple teams). But that's another story.

So after 15 weeks of Yeppoon continuing to extend their streak of about 116 or something (I've lost count), the finals draws have been confirmed for all grades. The first semi final is to be played at Gladstone on the 28th of August, the second semi is at Kele Park (Brothers) on the 27th.

Season still over a month away, not a lot of news save for...
  • Yeppoon as usual gaining their 2-3 players from country Victoria adding to what they have as they look to get closer to 150 in a row (almost at the stage where it's lost count).
  • New comp manager is supposedly close to being announced (previous one went back to club land)
  • Saturdays for the first 10 weekends are going to be even more crammed with Youth Girls added to the mix. 7 games of footy on a Saturday
  • Kele Park (Brothers Ground) has lights.....even if they weren't at 100% operational power last Saturday. For the first time in living memory we can actually see the ball at training once the sun sets!
  • BITS, Brothers and Gladstone have new coaches, unfortunately for Gladstone they parted ways with their originally announced coach (2010 St.Kilda GF player Robert Eddy) about a month after arriving (don't ask why, probably don't want to know).

Season begins April 23 for Yeppoon vs Glenmore and Gladstone vs BITS, and ANZAC Day for Brothers vs Panthers.

A quick google search might hold some clues. This the same lot that had milne and ricky nixon up for a sportsmans dinner last year?

Try to keep up with this one because Round 1 game times this weekend are all over the place.

YEPPOON vs GLENMORE: Women's play 7PM Friday Night, remainder on Saturday which is their ladies day with seniors at 3:30
GLADSTONE vs BITS: All grades play Saturday starting at 8AM (13s), but seniors start at 6:45 after their juniors (7s, 9s and 11s) play and an ANZAC ceremony is held
BROTHERS vs PANTHERS: Youth grades and Reserves play Saturday with 13s at 10AM. Women's and Seniors play on ANZAC Day with women's at 2:30 and seniors at 4PM now that the lights are (touch wood) fully functional.

Then Yeppoon vs Brothers in Round 2 have Reserves playing Friday Night at 7PM with the remainder on the Saturday.

Hearing Gladdy refused to play the second half last week over treatment of an injured player on the ground

And also with the services of one J Akermanis they came closer to the Swans than anyone in recent memory

Do I see the streak is broken!
Not just broken, but they've lost 2 games this season, first time that's happened since about 2015.
After the final round of matches the finals schedule appears to be set with the following matchups.

PRELIMINARY FINALS, SATURDAY 26 AUGUST at STENLAKE PARK, Rockhampton
GRAND FINAL, SATURDAY 2 SEPTEMBER, BOYNE TANNUM COUNTRY CLUB OVAL

GRAND FINAL SATURDAY, BOYNE TANNUM COUNTRY CLUB

UNDER 13:
Gladstone vs BITS, replay of 2nd semi which the Suns won by 11 points and they've won all 4 meetings between the teams this year
UNDER 15 GIRLS: Brothers vs Glenmore, another replay of the 2nd semi where the Roos won by 2 points. Roos have won 3 out of the 4 meetings all away from Kele Park. Bulls probably have an edge team wise but the Roos probably have the 2 best players on the ground by a fair distance.
UNDER 15 BOYS: Yeppoon vs BITS, by far the 2 best sides in this age group going head to head. Swans won the 2nd semi on their home ground by 5 goals and have won 3 out of 4. Importantly for BITS their win came at this ground in Rd 8 by 14 pts.
UNDER 17s: Panthers vs Yeppoon, Swans have won 2 elimination games to make it to this game, the only team in any GF to do so. Sides have only met twice this year owing to a forfeit by Yeppoon in Rd 9, and Panthers who finished top won both games by 34 and 24 pts, however they've also had disciplinary issues through the year especially if things don't go their way
RESERVES: Yeppoon vs BITS, Swans won the 2nd semi by 4pts and the Rd 14 clash at this ground by 5pts. However Saints were the only team to beat Yeppoon in the 2s this year in Rd 8. Seniors team selection will have a bearing on where this game goes, especially as BITS' U17 players if required and not selected in the seniors are fresh. They're a chance if they stop supply to Yeppoon's forwards who are only interested in goals but can be stopped if supply is slow and the defence is disciplined enough.
SENIOR WOMEN'S: Panthers vs Yeppoon, Panthers won by 8pts when they last met a fortnight ago at Yeppoon in the semi, and scored a surprise 10pt win in R4. Swans made the GF surviving a Prelim which went into a second period of Extra Time, the second of which was delayed midway through the period by 40 minutes due to a stretcher case requiring an ambulance (and of which the last 1:30 of the first half of the second ET was not played, strange given Time On is applied during finals).
SENIOR MEN'S: Yeppoon vs BITS, Swans won the 2nd semi at home by 8 goals, but aren't invincible especially after the Saints won last time they played at this ground by 6 goals, admittedly against a depleted Yeppoon side which they won't be this time around and may be stronger than their 2nd semi team. Indeed Yeppoon whom for years have feasted on defences throughout the region have only topped 100 points 6 times and have only had a pair of 100 point wins (Panthers in Rd 9 basically fielded a reserves team having forfeited that grade, Brothers in Rd 12 in a Friday Night game ended with 16 fit players). Saints were able to adapt better to the hour delay last week due to the women's game going to 2nd Extra Time with an ambulance intervention and were pretty much in control when I departed at HT.

Until the women's side turned it around in the last quarter it actually wasn't going to plan for the Swans on the day. They lost the 15s (which was delayed after the 15 Girls went to a second Extra Time period), they lost the 17s, they got rolled in the Reserves and Panthers got level in the last term of the women's before Yeppoon steadied. BITS had their chances too in the seniors.
