I see in Advertiser that the club has said it will announce the captain in one month.
After watching many games again over Christmas my view on the players that really showed leadership in crunch games such as Hawthorn St Kilda Bulldogs is that Selwood stood out - he was unbelievable in ferocity and throwing himself in when it mattered.
The others were Joel Corey - he never stops and Jimmy Bartel - so consistent. Enright and Chapman were the others.

Ling probably deserves one year as captain with Selwood vice vaptain and Corey and Bartel deputies. But I would have absolutely no problem with Selwood captain now.

Gazza may want it but does not appeal to me a captain - not sure why.

ling for captain and selwood for vice seem the obvious choice.

but there maybe someone we havent thought of that is more active in the playing group then we can see from the outside.

I like Joel Corey for captain. He has been super consistent over the last 3 years, and seems like a decent sort of bloke.

Hard to see Joel Corey handling the very important media obligations on past history.
That's why I think it HAS to be Ling. He is authoritative within the club and on-field and is a likeable and competent media performer.
Perfect captain for the next 2 years IMO, by which time Joel Selwood will be ready.

My choice:
Captain - Cameron Ling
VC - Joel Corey
DVC - Ablett, Bartel, Selwood

Ling is perfect for the job.
As is Selwood, but there's no need to give it to a 21 year old.

The club is in a great position because I'd be fine with any of the 5 guys above being named captain... :thumbsu:

Enright just appeals to me as captaincy material, sure he is a bit quiet and not all that media involved, but Neither was harley when he took over and look how he has flourished.

If giving Gazza the captaincy can help keep him on board then give it to him.

Selwood is still too young, Bartel is another brilliant candidate, maybe if he was Captain he may actually get to play Center like he should every bloody game.

Ling is odds on in my book. Selwood vice captain.

And spare me the "give it to Gazza" crew who seem to think captaincy will keep him at the club. Most of us still have bitter memories of one Leigh Colbert.............

if the club's confident of keeping selwood beyond this year then give it to him now. sure he's young, but he plays beyond his years and has been touted as a future captain since his first handfull of games.

but if there are questions over his future then ling is the obvious and very safe choice.

Disagree with the bolded, Harley has always come across as being very relaxed and media-savvy. Having heard Enright interviewed a few times on K-Rock I can't say he's in the same ballpark as Harley for that natural speaking role with the media. Ling and Selwood have a similar natural affinity when being interviewed, can't say Bartel's presence is particularly leaderlike when he's been on the Footy Show - he sounds a lot more like one of the boys as opposed to a leader of them.

Don't think it should be Ling, he should be vice at best. Joel Selwood for me, he is a mini Harley in terms of application, honour and character, in ways that Ling is not.

I agree as great as Ling has been i think we should be looking to the future. Joel has shown he has the right skills to do this, and lead the club to even greater heights. His application to detail should not be forgotten, and such an inspiration to not only the youngsters, but everyone involved with the club.

Who ever gets the gig i am behind not an easy decision for the club!
So many of our elite team could lead this awesome club.

Go cats 2010....

And I would ask why?

If the difference between him staying and going is the captaincy, well that's a good start on why he should not be anywhere near the captaincy. He's been caught out having discussions with the GC, I wonder what effect that has had with the other senior players. I'm sure in the group there would be a few that lost a lot of trust and respect in GAJ when that came out.

Ablett is petulant. He will argue with umpires decisions and when things start to go wrong he will be the first player that starts to point fingers at others.

He has started to have more of a media profile but he is not up to being the media face of the club for mine. Ghost written herald sun columns and the odd softly softly footy show "exclusive" that he nervously stumbles through doesn't exactly fill me with confidence. I've never been impressed with anything he has said in the media, it is usually just nervous atypical football cliche stuff.

As the best player in the team, it doesn't make him qualified to be captain. See Judd, C. if you want an example(s) of how this goes wrong.

Selwood for sure, I don't think his age is an issue. If anything it will encourage the playing group to rally around him. But I think they will give it to Ling for the next 2 years. Wouldn't complain if Mackie got a look in either.

If we lacked mature leaders, I would agree wholeheartedly with Selwood as captain, but generally very young leaders are appointed out of necessity to fill a leadership void. We have Ling, Bartel, Corey,Ablett, Enright, Chapman, Mackie among others who could comfortably be our Captain, and who have given years of dedicated service to GFC. Selwood's time will come and I think the St Kilda experience can show the danger of putting too much pressure on kids.
Let Joel Selwood just enjoy being a footy player and a young man for 1 or 2 more years.
Personally I think it would be criminal for Cameron Ling to not retire as "Former Geelong Captain".

Anything other than Ling/Selwood coalition will be a disappointment for mine.

Ablett better not get it.

If Ablett got it it would be seen as a way of trying to keep him at the club.Yes he might be our best player but I don't see him as being a good captain. He'd be like Chriss Judd.Ling,Selwood,Corey,Enright,Bartel or even Chapman would be players I'd prefer to see as captain ahead of Jr

Selwood end of story. Perfect for the job give it to him now.

Not until he re-signs.

People have mentioned Leigh Colbert and not wanting that to happen again and using that as a reason not to consider Ablett, yet Selwood's contract runs out at the same time and if Ablett does re-sign who do you think the next most likely place the GC will turn?
