I think we all agree that if he stays at the club Dangerfield will one day captain the club but who do we choose between Goodwin and Dangerfield.

Personally I think either VB or Rutten (Truck by name, mini minor by nature )will be the next captain as that would be the safe thing to do and that's what Adelaides about. But for me if we are serious about winning a premiership and bringing a harder edge to the club we need to choose someone from left field, someone with aggression, someone who leads by example.

Apart from Big Iv is there any other Crows player who comes close to having the onfield presence that Stiffy has. He may not have the communication skills that VB and the painfully boring Rutten possess but when it comes to leading by example he is head and shoulders above his teammates.

Thoughts?

Aboriginal players culturally tend to shy away from leadership roles. There is no doubt that Stiffy would be in our leadership group if he wanted to be in it.

yeah I know thats why its definately one from left field.

Captaincy Choices ( off field):

Rutten
VB

Captaincy Choices ( on field):

Stiffy
McLeod
Maric

While Maric is having a good year and showing tremendous competitive spirit in ruck, i don't think he is quite good enough as a player to be captain. Love his grunt but still need more than that.

vB perennially injured and is simply an average player. Having said that, has the intelligence and courage to be a great leader on and off field. So if fit, he'd be ok.

Stiffy has been brilliant lately, and shown his share of off-field courage and maturity to better himself and overcome challenges but i'm still not sure if it's right for him. Leave him be and let him continue to be the inspiration he is. If only the rest of our choir boys had his aggression at the ball and man.

The end of 2010 will be the end of an era. Even if one or two struggle on for another year, the sun will set on the Goodwin/McLeod/Edwards era (and hopefully a couple other over 30s as well). Stevens not good enough. Rutten a solid but bland FB...not the inspiring new leader we need to move forward.

Age is just a number. The time has come to look for a true leader who will inspire the troops, win the hard ball, take the strong mark, show courage, hit the contest aggressively to fire up the more timid players but also has the intelligence and off-field status a modern club needs.

Let's make a bold statement and begin a new era in the 2010's.

Who cares if this player hasn't been in the much vaunted 'leadership group'...you don't need titles and positions to develop and display leadership.

2011...AFC Captain...Patrick Dangerfield

I think Bock... he shows a bit of mongrel at times and is like the Quarterback back there in defence (at least when he was fully fit and in form)

Chris Knights would make a brilliant captain. He's got everything. Johncock isn't the worst call though.

Lets keep in mind that stiffy was dropped from the side not that long ago because of his poor preparation habbits.

While he's got strong "lead by example" qualities on the field being captain is more than a 2 hour a week job...

Great point that.

I think if Graham Johncock was made captain it would impact on his performance. I reckon Andy Otten would be a good candidate for the captaincy when Goody retires.

Doesnt always present himself to the club in the best physical condition, and has other behavioural issues he struggles with. Ill pass.

Ditto.

I'll still stick with VB to be the next skipper after Goody. No warts on VB.

Presents well to the public, good character, honest hard footballer, and a good example to his fellow team-mamtes.

Johncock is also well-known for hating any kind of limelight, despises public speaking and has training form issues every preseason. He's a brilliant player, but he's no off-field leader.

VB is ready to go as a captain right now. If Goody wanted to hang up the boots (or was kicked out) at the end of this season, the only thing that could pose any kind of problem with VB being promoted to captain would be if his body was still not right and we weren't sure he'd make it onto the park in 2011.

Knights would also be fantastic, though the same query over the body is yet to be answered. Both he and VB are hard workers, on and off-field leaders, training fanatics, and highly regarded within the club. We'd be fortunate to have either as our captain.

I'd have no issue with VB as captain.

what I want, is a captain that represents a complete break from the old guard.

VB fits the bill, as do a few others but I want to see generational change represented.

Yeah I knew it was one from left field but I thought I would throw it out and see what people thought. Desperate times......

As for Knights, love him as a player but has shown no where near the consistency required to be a captain. Definately a leadership group option though.

I think the club will choose VB as the next captain mainly because of his off field demeanor and its the safe option which is a real shame. Don't get me wrong, I really like him as a player he gives a 100% every week but I don't think his game is good enough for captaincy material.

I think long term Paddy is the man but he is probably 2-3 years away from being ready.

The Stiff man has had a lot of things on his plate. While he's a great on field leader through his actions, he doesn't strike me as one who will captain the side.

Johncock has been Our Little Hero from his very first game, and nothing he has done on the field has ever changed our opinion. That said, I've never seen him as captaincy material, on personality, not cultural issues.

VB is the man, for the reasons put forward by many others, and particularly the generational change necessity Crow-mo mentioned.

I don't have any problems with the fact he is not a star - I loved Bickley's captaincy, and everyone said he was just an honest player, with few special football talents.

I do worry a bit about the injury issues, but I'm betting VB wouldn't accept the captaincy if there were any predictable misgivings on that issue.

In fact, the only hesitation I have with VB is whether he represents enough generational change? Suppose he turned out well enough to keep the position? Goody was supposed to be an interim captain when he was appointed 66 games ago back in 2006, wasn't he? VB is only 23, do we really want Danger waiting for another 7 or 8 years?

On the other hand, if VB turns out that well, what does it matter? Like Stiffy, Danger will still be showing leadership on the field.

My choice is (as Cro-Mo put it) for a complete generational change:

Captain: Van Berlo
VC: Dangerfield

The leadership group:
VB, Dangerfield, Knights, Maric, Reilly
