HahaVB to tag Murdoch this week on the wing
My dad went to a dinner with sando, chapman and some other non afc people and he told me sando said pretty much everything but vb wont be captain next year. I cant remember the rest of the conversation exactly, but i think there was more of a lean toward sloane as captain over danger
I'd like to see Vader bet his Mods postion on VB retaining it.
I reckon both are in the same boat

How dare you!Look, the guys obviously down on form at the moment but I think he himself needs to make the call at the end of the year if he's going relinquish the captaincy, doubt he'll be pushed.
Watching Hodge's match tonight, he only had 15 touches but jeez he was almost BOG by some of the work he did, compare that to Van Berlo's 15 touch games and it's chalk and cheese.
You need your captain lifting the team like what Hodge does, it's such a vital ingredient to a successful club.
I'm sure VB is a great guy and absolutely brilliant with the players and more importantly youngsters giving advice and leading them through training, but most importantly out on the ground where he's needed the most he seems to go missing, we need him to be lifting our team and doing things that captains do, making the tough calls and not the easy option of passing in a straight line. VB's actually got a decent kick on him, just doesn't use it as often as he should.
Meanwhile we've got a player who I think will be our greatest player ever waiting in the wings, this guy will be the best in the competition very soon, he is a rare package plus the leadership which he was born with, he carries players on his shoulders. Then there's Sloane who also has tremendous leadership and the will to succeed, I don't think the captaincy will be a burden for either of these two players because it's natural for them to lead, it will have no effect on their game whatsoever because they are already playing like captains week in week out.
We need to make this decision at the end of the year, or Nathan will have to, I like VB as a player & person but something has to give, he's not performing at the moment and he needs to be dropped, but we cannot afford to drop our captain.
What are everyone's thoughts on this? I hope VB has a fantastic game tomorrow and proves me wrong.

How dare you!
We cannot even CONTEMPLATE stripping Van Berlo of the Captaincy. On field performance is irrelevant; what counts is "leadership"....not so much leading from the front "on the field", but how you conduct yourself "off the field", in relation to the CEO, the Board, and public statements in the Media. We cannot have a Captain that might question the competency and (possible) conflicts of interest of the CEO and Hierarchy at the club. We need a Captain that presents an absolutely unified front with Senior Management, and never questions the position we've been put in by our fearless and honest leader and CEO. On-field performance and statistics (over a long period) mean NOTHING. If the current Captain has the "unconditional support of the playing group" (according to the Board-instructed-media), then we must back him 100%. We must strive for "stable governance" and a "united front", where those in power can never be questioned and have their positions influenced by the votes of PAYING Members.
Dangerfield and Sloane (arguably our two best players) as Captain and Vice Captain? Have you taken leave of your senses? Hang your head in shame!!!

We never hear from our actual captain we only hear from our spiritual ones in Danger and RoryHave you noticed Jobe Watson tows the Bombres company line?
And Trengove/Grimes towing the "no tanking" line?
And what was Nick Maxwell's thoughts on Collingwood's salary cap breach last season?
Does Marc Murphy have an opinion on Judd's role at Visy?
Since when do ANY AFL captains question ANYTHING their club does at a board level?
hmm you might be onto something, i do notice he does speak to the team in the huddle maybe that's why we are shit, hes saying follow my lead boys!We dont hear from VB because he does not perform on field so has no right to front up to the media and discuss the teams form.

ExactlyI am sure that from an Administration point of view that Trigg can see VB being captain for as far as the eye can see.
Can i like this twice?

maybe....just stay with me here because it may sound a little crazy....but maybe the club recognises that the fans love Danger and Rory, but VB is the better leader behind the scenes? We never hear from our actual captain we only hear from our spiritual ones in Danger and Rory

He has had a poor year, and plays a negative game more often that not, so he may not stand out or make the huge plays as much as a Watson, Ablett, Hodge etc.
Honestly I think in hindsight it may have been a necessary stopgap while Danger found consistency in his game and maturity, but I think VBs time as an onfield leaderis coming to an endcame to an end...."a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away."
Thinking he is best in an off field mentoring capacity???
The fact that Van Berlo has (in some people's opinion, although not mine) "several years of good footy" left in him is precisely why I'd be looking to trade him. If now's not a good time for him to go home to WA, then it never will be.But what if the players vote for VB again? Does he tell the players do go stuff themselves? VB has several more years left of (I hesitate to say) "good" footy in him, it is possible and highly likely that he could continue to captain over that time. The captain, in my mind, should be a position that is more about satisfying the players rather than the fans.
Some of our players show on field their decision making is not great. The fact that Van Berlo has (in some people's opinion, although not mine) "several years of good footy" left in him is precisely why I'd be looking to trade him. If the players themselves voted VB in again, I'd begrudgingly accept their choice, but I'm betting that mistake is not going to happen again. Not this time.
