Being Captain might help that ;)

Today was baffling - even those of us critical of VB generally agree that he's a good tagger, and could settle back into that role making a valuable contribution. So, today, we have an opposition player who HATES being tagged and struggles with it big time, but can be a real weapon if he runs around unchecked... So what do we do?

Look I am not arguing that he is playing well. I am arguing that he apparently (according to the COACH) is doing what is asked of him. I think it's unfair to can the guy if he is in fact doing what is asked of him. As NONE OF US are privy to what that is, I take my lead from the COACH.

I'd suggest the COACH is just getting on the front foot in an attempt to minimise 2 weeks of discussion on this topic. Maintain the stats quo is the motto of the afc.

But is that VBs fault?

Look even as a tagger vB is limited. His physicality, particularly in the centre square, is poor. As a tagger on running half backs/ wings he is ok. That's his only chance from now on IMO.

He's not.. he's really not. He's badly out of form, yes - but there are still more than 19 players out there who are injured/immature/rubbish/in worse form than VB.

Hes been as bad as Brent Reilly who aint best 22 as we speak.

No I think that's wrong. He's been a very effective tagger when actually given the role over the years.

I'm not even comfortable with the fact the captain is a tagger.

Let him play his role as a professional tag and give the captaincy to someone else. It's time.

The 'captain' can be any role in the team. It's a leadership position, not an award for your best player. We give a yellow jacket for that at the end of the season.

I understand that.

It's important for the players to be able to respect, even be in awe of, what the captain does on the field. Voss, Carey, Hird, Buckley, Ricciuto......... Selwood, Brown, Hodge, Watson......

It's very difficult for a captain who only has a role in the team as a tagger to have this kind of influence on the rest of the group.

If you listen to the way the players talk about Dangerfield, they ARE in awe of him. He inspires the team. The fact he's the best player in the team at the moment is purely coincidental. It's always been only a matter of time until he takes the captaincy.

2014 is that time. It has come.

Agree Danger for 2014 but I think you can still inspire the team as captain if you are tagging. Pregame you address who the oppositions best player is and how important it is to shut him down, if your captain shuts him down that can inspire the team. Plus if he gets a few kicks himself and uses it well that also is critical. But the biggest gripe I have at the moment is his lack of tackling, he should be leading us to improve it, not be a non-factor

I know what you're saying but it's in no way like Hodge, Brown etc as Slippery has listed above, and what they create.. An aura surrounds guys like that and it feeds off into many avenues..

When was the last time we used him as a tagger week in week out? If we ever have? I'm really not that sure he's that good of a tagger either as looking at the games in the past where he has done run with roles/tagging jobs, it's very rarely been against the teams best players like good taggers do and often against guys that don't require that much skill to tag out of a game (Hill from Freo for example).

It's surprising how much we miss someone like Shirley who we sent to the best opposition player week in week out and did a pretty good job.

Ling wasn't too bad a captain when Harley retired which gave them a few years before giving it to Selwood. But Ling > daylight > Van Berlo.

It's a symbolic thing as much as any. Having Danger walking into the middle tossing that coin just sends all kinds of messages to the opposition. He is universally respected.

It's one of several symbolic decisions the club needs to make before the start of next year. The others are:

- more experienced support in the coaches box for Sanderson (ie - more Baileys, less Clarkes)

- a new CEO

-a new Footy Ops manager/media front man

-a board clean out.

Adelaide Oval is the chance for this club to move forward and have a fresh start, leaving behind the ugly dramas of the last few years.

What are the odds?

Reilly's replacement by Jaensch was an epic blunder. Reilly was bad last week. Jaensch was worse this week - far worse.

Besides which, the COACH seems happy that he's performing the role to which he has been assigned (even if you & I have no idea what that role is). His position would appear to be secure while the COACH thinks he's doing his job.

Actually, over the years he's done pretty good jobs on the likes of Ablett, Murphy, Chad Cornes (when he was still good) etc. Certainly not the case to say he's only effectively negated the low hanging fruit.

He was on fire as a tagger towards the end of 09, he was cleaning up Judd and then hurt his back and missed the finals.

Every club needs a tagger, keeping VB in no mans land is just dumb. I just dont understand it. So frustrating to see such obvious moves not being made.
