btw, i'm running a vader veneration factual statement program on this. personally, I think there's a bit of water to flow under the bridge and I doubt anyone can comfortably state what will happen in 4 weeks let alone the following 2-3 years. vader is the exception though, so I figure I might as well provide appropriate reverence to vader's certainty, but apply it to the other side of the discussion.

It's generally a better idea to post what you actually think, rather than trying to play yin to other poster's yang for the sake of being obstinate.

Very difficult to imagine any outcome other than VB playing AFL footy throughout all of 2014, 2015 and beyond, injury permitting of course.

I just love reactions like these.

Why thank you Vader. I'm not kidding, only last week I read somewhere on here the of the Victorian footy journalists he was near the worst-regarded; I've seen a number of his 'tweets' that I would consider back up those opinions.

I rarely launch into hyperbole on this site, except when going for the obvious comedy. So to be serious I would be surprised if Jon Ralph doesn't watch most if not all of the games on a weekend. But, in all fairness to VB, while he's nowhere near the worst player to even don a guernsey for our club, to make AA squad contention you've got to be in the best 40 players in the competition, out of approximately 600 AFL players. Basically, he has to be in the best two or three players at a club to be considered. He's not in the best two or three at Adelaide this season.

Ah crap you already wrote this same answer.

Journos always throw a few wildcards into their AA teams. First to be unique, second to start people arguing.

Arguing means people are talking about/reading your article.

It wouldn't be a viewed as a burden (verb) but it is and extra thing on top (noun). You can see games now where Danger tries to lift the whole team on his shoulders. It happened in the Richmond game, where he had an open option closer to goal, he went for the shot and missed. A lead from the front captain needs to include his troops. It's not a criticism because a player has to back themselves at times but there are aspects of his game that will develop with maturity..... that maturity will make him a better captain.

That being said if there is a change and the playing group embrace it I'm not going to criticise it because the Captain is for the playing group not the fans.

No Captain is perfect - Danger is already where he needs to be, and he'll develop in the role.

Dangerfield is the clubs best leader.

Honestly, how could we know? Have any of us ever been lead by either player?

Those who are actually in a position to know always talk about VB's leadership with reverence. I don't see any reason not to believe them.

I'm sure Dangerfield would (and most likely will) be a great captain, but there's no reason I can see to assume he's a superior leader to VB. Superior player, no doubt, but that's only one part of being a captain.

Dangerfield is a leader of men. VB leads on the track.

A captain's first and most important role is to perform as a player. Only people who have never played sport will tell you otherwise.

Out of the players who are proven performers, the best leader is chosen as captain.

This is how it has to be. The Mike Brearley option cannot exist. Leadership without onfield performance is what coaches are for.

VB's playing form would be worrying the club significantly.

I love VB but I reckon he has fallen backwards as a player. He's seemed stuck between roles. A Mr Fixit going wherever there is a vacancy rather than where his strengths lie. His best footy has been as a link man through the middle, still running to space and gathering touches while others on the ground tire. Also with a slightly more defensive focus than his ball hunting midfield team mates. He was the ball-winner who would sneak under the radar while the opposition were busy trying to stop the stars. Has the Crowley style hard tag ever been his go?

Whether VB is captain next year or not, the club has to focus more heavily on getting the best footbal it can out of him rather than shuffling him through a series of team first, sacrificial roles.

A captain leads by example and makes an impact when it counts. He leads the way when the tough gets going and is inspirational. Doesn't mean you have to be the best player but has to be in the top 5-10. Is VB this?

No but I wasn't arguing this ;)

When? In what way has it been proven?

You're being ridiculous.

VB, has proven he is a leader in on the track, preseason year in, year out.

Dangerfield has shown on-field leadership for a long period and I believe he is ready to take over the reins.

agreed ....but let the kid continue to develop and enjoy his footy without the pressure of captaincy and all the off-field additional workload

another 2 years under Van berlo & at 25 Dangerfield will be cherry ripe

I think he is the sort of character who will take it in his stride not see it as a burden.

Yes. His Club Champion voting over the last 5 years is evidence of that.
