Disputable.. I can live with. It's a matter of opinion.

I think he's having a poor year by his high standards, but he is now and has always been an excellent leader.
So now he's having a poor year, oh dear. Does that make you a Big Footy idiot?

With the greatest respect Lord Vader how do you know if its debatable?
Let's see.. one has been selected as Captain for the last 3 years - both elected by the players and selected by the coaches. The others have been made deputies under VB's leadership. Of course it's debatable.

The problem with this post is it assumes the club never gets anything wrong.

Someone said it on another thread yesterday- we need to be able to make him accountable for his performance. It's too hard to drop your captain (and our selectors have shown they are not brave). Our captain needs to be someone good enough to pick even in a form slump. Vb is not that good, and there is enough pressure on his playing position that he shouldn't be captain next year.

And that's before you even consider his on field leadership, which is pretty hard to see.

This is exactly what I was saying the other day. Having un-droppable players only works with elite talent. Plodders like Van Berlo don't fall into this category.

I wouldn't deny that Van Berlo is a beast on the track. This is a well known fact. And yes he was elected by his peers.

That said, I'd like to see actual evidence that he's a good captain on the field.

Do we look particularly organised out there? No.
Do our players look as motivated as they need to be to win in the AFL? No.
Does Van Berlo's form inspire confidence in other players? How could it? His form this year has varied from competent to mediocre. There's no guarantee VB can beat his direct opponent little-own inspire others to do so.

He's not even close to being our worst but judging by the standards set by other captains in the AFL, he's a long way off being captain material.

Dangerfield is probably the best player on our list. He's easily the most inspiring from a supporters point of view. This doesn't make him the best leader necessarily but he definitely falls into the elite category. Van Berlo's form on the other hand has been patchy all year and we can't even hold him accountable.

Just make Dangerfield or Sloane captain already and be done with it. Who knows? Maybe Van Berlo could benefit from a little less responsibility.

Great point.

Would there ever be a time when you would consider not selecting Dangerfield? He'd have to be on his death bed.

Even then, you'd probably wheel it out for at least a half.

When VB is compared to previous captains of the club, the regular refrain we hear from his apologists is "Well, not everyone can be a Mark Ricciuto."

It's interesting to note that, we have a man who many pundits agree is comparable to Ricciuto in many, many facets - so much so we gave him Roo's old number. VB apologists go strangely silent on this.

They won't have any comparisons on VB's leadership. VB is to be judged on his own set of standards.... He is not to be compared to better leaders... For instance, Ricciuto...and Dangerfield.... That would be unfair.

VB is a proven leader on the track. He is also a proven leader on the ground.
HAHAHAHA, when your captain is tagging (pooorly) the other teams captain you know something is wrong. VB is finished as a "leader" at the AFC regardless of his 3km time trial results over pre season.

Dangerfield for captain and VB for the Ravens.
