I started this new thread because I believe it differs from whether or not the number 5 guernsey should be retired/ reintroduced.

I personally believe that no number should be worn by the captain all the time e.g. what is happening at Richmond being captain is a great enough honour without having to wear a special number.

I am particularly against No. 5 being worn by the captain because it would be after Polly Farmer (who never captained Geelong) and Gary Ablett (who was joint captain for 1? season - correct me if im wrong). Neither were great captains and didnt make their fame as captains nor does anyone remember them as captains. They are legends of the game not legendary captains so to make captains wear number 5 would be disrespectul to all other captains that have worn the blue and white hoops.

If we retire No.5, then we've set a precedence for all numbers.

Most who saw Graham Farmer play believe that he was a wonderful leader and excellent captain for the GFC. I can't comment as i never saw him play.

Agree with you on the second comment though. Not a fan of the captain having to wear a certain number, but if it did happen, i'd look at other numbers before 5.

Having a captain wear a particulat number is stupid. This great game has a tradition of players being recognised by the number on their back, rather than their position like league or Union.

Even with those codes the captain wears the number of his position not that of the captain. If you are playing rep games this may change but I think it is a dumb idea.

Pick the captain on his leadership and the number he is wearing is irrelevant.

As for the great #5 Yes Farmer was a great player but GA is recognised as one of the unique players in the history of the game and while it is not retired it should lay in wait for the right opp. I pity the person (GA jnr excepted) who finally gets to wear the number as he will have way too much pressure on him for most of his career.

I believe the best way to solve this No 5 issue is to give it to Cameron Ling now. You would find it would'nt worry him in the slightest, as in being under pressure, as he has proven himself already.
Yes there would be a Hoo-hah about it at first, but it would all quickly be forgotten as Lingy goes about his business.
