Why?! Because he is not in a certain age group?!
Fact is that Goodwin is the one best qualified to be our captain now and he did a pretty fine job this year standing in for Roo afters a pre-season of controversy.
Fact is that players choose the leaders and their captain and that is absolutely the way it should be because they need someone that they feel they can look up to and follow. People will point to his gambling incident but even after that, the players still saw Goodwin as the right person to lead them.
Some will suggest that the coach should choose the captain and that would be hypocritical. Once you are committed to a certain leadership model and you have gone a long way down the path of following that model, and its been working well for you, it would be hypocritical to change just so some can be satisfied with a young captain.

Hell what happened to Van Berlo ....did he pinch a party balloon?
He was the rage for captain along with Thompson mid season.
Who in the media is pushing the Rutten bandwagon .......this sudden push has to be more than a coincidence
Ive been advocating Goody all along, but the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of Macca getting the gig. If the AA selectors think he's worthy of captaining the AA team, why the hell not. He's a superstar, he's got all the boxes ticked and is a great bloke too. Above all I reckon he could handle the role without it effecting his personal on field performance, something I reckon the young lads might not be able to do.
Just on the young guys... I reckon VB is too young and too inexperienced in too many areas. Wouldnt think he'd be in the running just yet. Thomo seems to have many of the attributes but I do think it would be detremental to his performance, something we can afford as he is IMO the key to our midfield going into 2008/9. Rutten, while he is a good candidate, I believe has his hands full holding the oppositions best forward week in week out. The captaincy could be too bigger burden to carry with his vital role week in week out. Reilly is the one many seem to ignore. He has very similar attributes to Thomo. Probably too much expected of him in the next 2 years to carry the captaincy can too.
I think all of these young guys could do a good job, but I reckon we need better than good, we need greatness steering our club through what will be a difficuly couple of years. Thats why in my mind its Goody or Macca.
But surely the best thing a captain to do to lift his team is play a huge game and do all the hard stuff. Plus, the leadership group these days covers the whole ground, so there's no issue in him being stuck down the other end of the ground. The way he has built and commanded such a stellar defence unit around is a tribute to what a brilliant player he is.
I wouldn't quite go so far as to say he's built and commanded our defence he's definitely a great leader back there and does a stellar job week in week out, but he has definitely had a lot of support with blokes such as Basset, Mcleod, Hart, Johncock and Torney back there for a vast majority of his career, 4 of which have all spent time in the leadership group.
But McLeod has come out and publicly said that he doesn't want to be the captain of the club and that being in the leadership group has never felt comfortable for him.Andrew Mcleod has more years left than Goodwin IMO.
I'm not doubting any of those players abilities, but the impact that Rutten's injury had on the side this year was huge. I can't recall any Crows player's absence having such an impact on performance of the whole team like that.
