I figure I'll open a can of worms here. If you're going to scoff, play ad hominem for daring to question, calm yourself down and relax.

It occurred to me today that Shuey is captain. I love him as a player, even when he's in a rough patch he still tries hard, at least most games I've seen him play.

However, when he was selected as cap, I understood that there were logically no other options available. Question is, is he a leader? He just doesn't strike me as a captain but then I'm at a loss of who I'd replace him with.

Keep in mind I think he's great, but I'm not sure he's right for captain. Then again, people doubted Hurn in his captaincy early on as well.

Thoughts?
 
Has been a leader at the club for a very long time and was the clear #1 candidate for captain.
Everything I've seen of him on the field in 2020 suggests he's working his butt off to lift the guys.

Very weird to question his captaincy only 4 games in.

He is also new in the role while being confronted by a unique situation. I am sure he is getting club wide support but what a magnificent learning challenge for him. He will emerge even better as a leader in time.
 
I find this thread staggering. Shuey is one of the most consistent players in the team at standing up when the game is on the line. Before you even raise the 2018 Grand Final performance, you only have to look at any number of H+A games over the years.

Even as recently as the Suns game this year, Shuey basically kills himself to try and get the game back in the third quarter. He clearly hasn’t been right since, and honestly I’m surprised he’s played (especially that Brisbane game after a light week of training).

When people were questioning Hurn as captain years ago, it was because Shuey was and had been our on field leader for so long already. That was years ago too.

Questioning Luke Shuey’s leadership and willingness to put himself on the line for the team is absolutely wild.
 
I think the biggest problem Shuey is facing surrently is his leadership support in the forward-line (JJK and Darling) and in the backline (Hurn, Gov) are either in horrible form or losing the plot.

Shuey is busting his arse but the midfield is still trying to find it's feet in this new TK world. I would actually love to see Shuey set the example in the midfield with some blocking and shepherding to get the other guys going. I think trying to lead by individual heroics is just not the right tack for what we are lacking in the middle currently.

Yes, and when we did everyone was clamouring to install Shuey as he was so clearly our most visible leader.

A few more losses and I expect there’ll be a thread about changing our colour scheme as it’s just not working anymore.
 
Let's be honest here, ignoring Shuey completely, we aren't exactly blessed with options :shrug:


McGovern - Fat and undisciplined.

JK - About to retire

Hurn - About to retire

Duggan - Is an average on field leader and even vanilla footballer.

Yeo - In a form slump, too undisciplined to ever be a leader.

Darling - Wets his pants and is attacked too often from media and fans. It's easy to take pot shots at him and call him mentally fragile, but he probably is.

Gaff - Cockburn would go nuclear.



I think we made the right call. Shuey is an outstanding person and great servant of the club. I wish he didn't HAVE to be captain, but it looks like he does.

This is one of those things that people outside the club will never be able to quantify. No one knows how he goes about leading the group at training, after hours and during a game. You know when a leader is not effective is when morale drops and players tend to start infighting ala the Crows. I think Shuey has a lot of experience and probably knows what should happen on field which is good enough.
 
I think Shuey deserves to be captain.The downside is that hes not a huge fella and as we all know teams make it a habit to go after team leaders.Hes so team oriented that while our big fellas are soft coc#ing around the place hes putting himself consistently in the firing line and consequently getting hammered.The captaincy will ;i believe; have a detrimental effect on his football longevity.
I always thought Carlton were stupid for having Murphy as captain for so long.Tho hes not in Shueys league.
 
Perhaps I should re-frame my idea as some others have alluded to what I probably missed and that was he's new at the whole position.
I already mentioned writing him off early ala Hurn: reminiscence.

It is more that I wonder if him being inexperienced as captain has in a way contributed to the current situation of ineffectiveness. Nobody can question his effort, that wasn't what I was getting at and made it pretty clear that he busts a gut to do well: leading by example in a way. That isn't the only aspect of being a captain, in the sense that does he make other players respond? Leading by example doesn't by itself gel/push a team.

It's more a thread of curiosity than hate. I reckon Shuey is probably one the most consistent Eagles out there.
I knew even putting this up would lead some to get uppity.

There is no obvious leader / captain other than shuey to me.

Other players continually fail when its their turn to show onfield leadership

In which case...


Guys I think we really need to debate the merits of Shuey as captain and if he's the right man for the job ;)
