This week, as we all know Selwood recorded 100 games as captain. Our skipper only needs 42 more games to match; and then surpass Reg Hickey in most games captained for the club.

1st - Reg Hickey - 142 games (1930-1940)
2nd - Henry Young - 137 games (1903-1909)
3rd - Ian Nankervis - 110 games (1978-1981, 1983)
4th - Joel Selwood - 100 games (2012-present)

An impressive record for our skip as he's only 27 (28 on 26th May) and still a lot of football ahead of him. While Selwood could captain the club for another 3+ years and beyond and set a new record entirely it got me thinking who will be our next captain?

2 years ago, the likes of Duncan and Caddy were names thrown in the ring to replace Joel when he finally decides to relinquish his captaincy. Taking into consideration the clubs hype around Dangerfield and being labelled 'a leader of men', as well as his immediate induction into the leadership group - he should also be considered.

Trending in the AFL right now is having captains who are VERY good players. Looking around the league perhaps Shannon Hurn is the lesser player of the lot, but hardly a mediocre player in his own right. Furthermore all these captains lead by example, they are all consistent and courageous and all share a love for contested possession. Now this factor alone shouldn't manipulate captain candidacy but I myself believe its the best way to lead a team.

When i look at Duncan i don't see enough spirit as of yet, furthermore he is more of an uncontested player. When i look at Caddy i don't see enough consistency although he has had experience captaining the Northen Knight in TAC days. Guthrie has flown under the radar making me wonder if hes more of a follower then leader. All will no doubt develop substantially but right now are they suited for captaincy? Dangerfield certainly fits the criteria but by the time Joel finishes he will be 28/29 himself meaning his role will be short term.

So what do we think guys? Who do we think will be our next skipper once Prince Joel calls it a day?

I might make a call right now and tip Blicavs.

two years ago I thought that it would be Caddy. Now I think that it will be Duncan. Blitz is a fair call, not much in it.

I thought Caddy might succeed Selwood, and he may well still do so, but for me No.2 is now Paddy Dangerfield. He oozes leadership.

Does Duncan categorically fit the profile of an on and off field leader though? I remember early days he was tipped to be the one from the club internally. I just don't see his on field leadership much when i watch games, most of it seems to come from the likes of Bartel, Selwood, Danger, Enright and Taylor such as positional changes and structure set ups.

Agree on Caddy perhaps he has been slightly underwhelming from what we were expecting from an Ablett trade/compensation. While his heart is there he lacks ability at times but hes still very young.

Is backing Danger in as a short term captain the way to go? I really do prefer the long term captains myself as you can build clubs around there leadership.

the challenge is to guess what they will be like in 3 - 5 years

Good question to pose. My view is you go with the best man at the time, regardless of age (within reason). Look at Ling, and even Harley. If Selwood goes for another 2 seasons, Danger will then be 27 - 28.

I'd be thinking atm Selwood has at least three years as captain, barring an unforeseen inj(cannot complete for fear of invoking the wrath of the inj*** God's).

I reckon he'll "abdicate" at the end of 2017, hand over the reins to Paddy, a la Mitchell at Hawthorn

I felt like Mitchell got shoved, more than voluntary. ( or it could just be my bias showing)

Fair enough it doesn't look like there's much else. I think in regards to Lings tenure there was a lot of expectation Ablett would take the reigns from cat fans, however a void with bomber was apparent and it got very heated.

Interesting scenario but I still reckon Sel will be our best onfield leader beyond 2017, also danger hasnt been at the club that long. Should he be captain?

Also think that was the case. Read a few articles internally they werent happy with Mitchell at the time.

Plenty on the Geelong board will say he hasn't but my view FWIW is:
- Danger is already a damned good leader at the club on and off the field;
- He was destined to be captain at Adelaide but was overlooked because he would not commit;
- The circumstances in which he came to Geelong suggest he is a man of integrity (he could have gone to Melbourne or Hawthorn for more money....); and
- He is now my favourite Geelong player (I am biased!!)

All very relevant points. The bolded point alone swayed my opinion substantially ;)

Cockatoo will be up there in three years. He's got leadership written on him now. Doesn't drink, respectful, hard and fairly switched on. Watch for him.

great interview with him on the club home page. What a knock about bloke, fantastic

I can't see danger ever being captain.

He did come to mind. Needs to step into the midfield and become a central figure onfield I believe though, still very raw but can see how that could be so.

How so? Because he didn't start with Geelong? He may never become captain of Geelong but if he did it would because he is deserving, because he is a leader on and off the field, i.e., captain material

Simply the age profile.

I think the window will slide past. Although Selwood might be done in 4 years, I think they'd skip danger and go for a longer term captain.

Yeah, you're probably right.

I think dangerfield if selwood decided to step back at some point soon. Blicavs if there happened to be a change in 3-5 years.

Blitz has the professionalism and ability. Coaches always talk about how quickly he learnt the game so I assume he has great knowledge and understanding of game plans etc, may translate to giving good direction on field.

Im sure a GHS type would make a good captain but im not sure he's good enough to make the team.

He looks very comfortable out there with our boys. Almost like he has known them for years ;)

A Geelong Falcon always obviously :D
