Damian drum said in an article that there would be no team captains in three years time. Even this year Fremantle discussed not appointing a captain.

This follows the appointment of Ric Charlseworth to the Freo backroom. Under his time at the helm of the Hockeyroos he scrapped having team captains.

My bet is that in 20 years time we will still have team captains.

Some of the roles of the captain are acutally written into the laws of the game in places.

An Example:

I wish Richmond were the first team to play the captainless Dockers. I would play all 22 players on the field at the one time. The umpires would know we are doing it. The opposition would know we are doing it. The crowd would know about it.

But nobody could do a thing about it because only the captain can call for a player count.

BTW, if in this example Freo countered by putting all 22 players on the field, our captain would ask the umpires for a player count. Of course we would win because they were found to be cheating!

In 3 years time, Freo shouldn't have a team. They are a bloody disgrace. Every other introduced team, Eg. Port, Crows, Eagles have all showed gradual improvement. Have Freo? No. 6 years in the comp and they are pretty much where they started.

That was fine for the Hockeyroos, who were vastly experienced and successful, but a club like the Dockers with so many new/young players needs to have a defined leader. And it should be Peter Bell.

BTW - now that the Hockeyroos have a new coach and half their experienced players retired, I wonder if they'll go back to having a captain...
