Obviously on the back of Clarke's 200 to bring up his 3rd double ton in 2012, who else has performed better as a player when the captaincy has been thrust upon them? I know this may be looked at as hero worship, but being a relatively new fan of the game, I admit I don't know much of the game's history rather than the basics.

this is a list of the best batting averages for captains, minimum 10 test matches as captain

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/en...ualval1=matches;template=results;type=batting

a few stand out as a significant improvement over their regular averages, particularly clarke, jayawardene and sangakarra.

it's also worth noting kumar sangakarra averages something like 75 in test matches when not wicket keeping.

martin crowe (only 14 tests as captain) and brian lara have a fairly decent boost on their career averages.

i can't be bothered going through all of them though.
