Senior.

Only one in his era [Dunstall, Lockett and Carey] in the Team of the century.

Kicked close to 600 goals as a HFF/Wing. Then as a specialist full forward 1993-96 attained a higher goal kicking average than Lockett and Dunstall’s career.

The duck. Pffft.
Please.

600 goals from a wing....lol
He played a couple of seasons on a wing (one of those at Hawthorn) but he played as a roaming forward when he kicked those first 600.
Then when he finally decided to play closer to goal (instead of ANYWHERE he wanted to play as a roaming forward)...he showed a real dominance from FF.

You understand what / means?

I said HFF/Wing. That means a mix of both.

Yeah I understand what it means BUT it insinuates that he kicked heaps of goals from the wing.
GAS didn't have the tank to run a wing...and he kicked very few goals doing it.

So trying to make out he played half his career up the ground....like a Mathews or a Daicos (snr) is not really accurate now is it?

He was a great forward.

Geelong plodders saying Gaz, North plodders saying Duck, who'da thunk it.

It's close but Carey had more of an impact all over the ground (hence lower goal totals) and was a better contested mark, although Ablett had the better specky and highlight reel plays.
North won the 1999 Grand Final when Carey moved to the centre, such was his impact.

On a related note, Brownless < Longmire

I can’t go past Ablett, he’s the best player I’ve ever seen and I dare say just about the best footballer to ever step on a field.

That’s not to denigrate Carey, who an all time legend.

But Ablett was just a freak of nature. It’s not that he didn’t have a weakness… it’s that he wasn’t even “just okay” or “decent” at anything. He was brilliant in every way.

You name it. Strength, speed, skill, aggression, leap, hands, kicking… he was just a bloody megastar at everything, and had more than a bit of absolute mongrel campaigner in him too.

I would probably say take Dusty at his best, but quicker, and would routinely crash packs and stand on bloke’s heads. Then was sent to the goalsquare at age 32 and kicked 375 goals in three seasons.

Ablett was great to watch, could do it all and spectacularly, his highlights reel is awesome. Carey was a great leader of men and helped his team get over the line time and again. Individually Ablett was better he’s one of the best I’ve seen but for the team and his team mates, Carey was better.

Yeah I am going to have to disagree slightly there.

He did for a period, and I saw some of the best goals kicked by him from the centre and wing. From his first game with Geelong in 1984 where he played wing and kicked 3 goals, to a game in 1986 v Richmond where things were tight and Mick Turner suggested Ablett do something. So he took the ball out of the middle, bounced once and bombed a 65 metre goal
