Former North Melbourne CEO Carl Dilena will join the Saints as their new chief operating officer.

Lethlean said Dilena’s appointment would provide valuable support for him as a first-time CEO.

“Carl has broad industry experience. He is an important addition for us as we continue to draw down our debt to focus on football,” Lethlean said. "Additionally we have a new business in the Danny Frawley Centre and a new CEO, being me. I am giving up a portfolio of football plus strategy, operations and legal so that requires senior operators to lead it and as a first-time CEO it’s important to have that support from Carl as well.”

Dilena will take over as COO and have finance operations, strategy and IT under his control while David Rath will become head of football performance and James Gallagher head of list and talent management.

Dilena stood down as CEO of North Melbourne in 2019 after six years in the job, a period in which he had overseen the club eradicate its debt. He had been on the North board for five years before becoming the CEO. He left North amid a period of sweeping changes to all leadership positions at the club under former chairman Ben Buckley. Within months the club changed its CEO, football manager, senior coach and list manager. Dilena has a solid football understanding, having also been a senior player for Fitzroy and North Melbourne.

Dilena most recently was at North Melbourne, and took the Roos to two preliminary finals during his time there but he is more known for his impact on the clubs debt where he worked to get them debt free and posting profits in 10 of his 11 seasons at North in his role as Chair of Finance and then 7 seasons as CEO.

Dilena has 24 years of experience in Finance and was a former AFL footballer, playing 33 games for Fitzroy and North Melbourne between 1989-1992.

If anyone has more info on him post it here - good to get a better read on new appointments.

Thanks

I need to know the view of gringo2011 , specifically whether this new appointee is an idiot, a bumbling idiot or simply a bloody idiot [emoji848]

Don't know him, but he sounds like a cheap bottled pasta sauce so he's probably no good.

Was a director of Creative Partnerships Aus after leaving North Ceo I believe, basically an arts / cultural group, I believe focusing on audit and other financial instances.

The way Lethers stated it though, my first throught was "Dilemma? I have one of those! Who's this Carl guy?"

Pretty well regarded at North, particularly for his financial management/business skills. They had a good era under him. Familiar with navigating the relationship between the AFL and one of its small debt-ridden clubs. To be honest, more qualified to be our CEO than Lethlean. Will bring an interesting perspective on our structure/operations and whether it is working in a football sense or whether we need to make changes.

Anyway it’s a great appointment as I said previously.

Do you know who he is seriously? I don't think I've ever noticed him, or at least he hasn't left an impression on me. Hope he's a gun.

He was very good at north for a fair few years. In the end I don’t believe the footy area is really helped by that role or even the ceo but poor admin can destroy a great few seasons. Westaway and nettlefold showed that.

Did you read it or did you know of him before hand? I honestly don't recall him which is probably good in an administrative role. Like umpires, better just doing their job without fanfare.

No I remember him well because he did a lot of media and listening to sen every day nearly all day means you hear a lot of admin staff.
