You would think such a high profile game such as this would carry some importance in the northern states but alas NO! So much for the AFL's continuing growth in these states, I thought channel 7's brief was to help promote the game there. It seems to me that the AFL has made no significant dent in these markets especially on TV, where all supporters have to sit up past midnight to even see the game! Channel 7 has been pathetic in promotion of the game everywhere, not to mention the actual coverage. I hope the TV rights are ripped away from this basket case of a network and given to somebody who can do the game justice.

I feel sorry for you, I would really spit the dummy if they weren't showing it until late here in Perth.
I would stage a demonstration outside 7's studio here if they were putting it on late, why don't all the people in the Northern states stage a demo outside their studios.
It could help, I know that phone calls & emails don't work, I've tried that heaps of times.

We've tried everything up here sandie -

letters, emails, phone calls, picketing outside their studios in Epping - ALL TO ABSOLUTELY NO AVAIL

Channel Seven still insists on televising Australian Rules into Sydney and Brisbane lat in the evening, or to be more precise, early the following morning.

Its the same for Swans / Lions games as it is for regular H&A games, traditional Melbourne blockbusters, it all means the same to these people.

I did my usual trick of ringing up and complaining and you know what happened this time ?

The girlie on the other end said - "We broadcast the Rugby Union Test live didn't we?"

!!!!?!???!??? - what the ???

It just goes to show this pack of clowns DO NOT EVEN KNOW WHAT AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL IS - let alone make a sensible decision about broadcasting it.

Channel Seven are the biggest w***ers in Australian Media full stop - and thats saying something believe me.

If wasn't for Aussie Rules there would be NO Channel Seven full stop - don't they realise this ?

Why should the AFL games be televised live into Sydney? They wouldnt rate. A John Wayne movie would outrate AFL there. Similarly, that same movie would outrate rugby in Melbourne. That is the crux of the matter.Ratings. If it was going to rate, they would put it on, but it doesnt. And people want to spread it internationally when as BSA has said before, no one gives a stuff in Sydney for Sydney games let alone two non-Sydney teams.
All your bleating is incredibly naive.

KS,

On this particular occasion, I think Ess V Carl would rate higher than a John Wayne movie up North. A John Wayne movie on a Friday night is not exactly going to set record ratings.

That's not saying Essendon vs Carlton is going to set a record rating up there. It won't. Never said it would. But there is enough interest up there in AFL for the Swans to have 25,000 members, and the Brisbane Lions to draw bigger crowds than the Broncos. It's true.

This is a unique match, remember. Probably the biggest Home and Away game in the 104 year history of the VFL/AFL. Certainly the biggest since the 1958 H&A clash between first and second (Melbourne and Collingwood) on Queens birthday, which drew 99,000.

I think that warrants that it be given preference over a low-rating movie on Channel 7. People would rather watch sport on weekends. Any sport. And Friday night is part of the weekend.

The Bledisloe Cup telecast here in Melbourne didn't rate through the roof (nor would you expect it to), but it still drew enough Melbourne TV veiwers to at least warrant it being shown live.

The same principle should apply in Sydney and Brisbane for Essendon vs Carlton.

Thats the standard excuse trotted out by Channel Seven every time Kevin. But I would like to make three points -

1) How can they say it won't rate WHEN THE'VE NEVER EVEN TRIED IT - yep thats right Channel Seven has never shown a game of Aussie Rules at 8.30 pm on a Friday evening, so how would they know it dosen't rate ?

2) On Friday night instead of the footy they are showing a repeat (yes, a repeat) of a British cops and robbers show called A Touch of Frost. Everyone who would be interested in this kind of show (and I admit there alot of them) has already seen it - so why put it on a second time around ? A repeat of this kind of show would not rate better than the footy - I guarantee it.

3) As Dan24 suggested - this game is special, its going to be huge and a fantastic advertisement for the game. Just imagine the impression it would make on children 7-14 years old who would be watching it - bet your bottom dollar there will be NO impressionable youngsters watching a 12.15 am replay.

Sorry if I have raged on a bit but this particular isssue is very important to me, as the sheer volume of my emails and phone calls to AFL and Channel Seven will verify.

cheers

Just to follow up - here is a copy of the latest email I sent to the AFL on this issue just today. It is typical of the HUNDREDS of such emails I have sent to the AFL and Channel Seven for the last five years (since I first moved up here) :

Good afternoon

Please explain to me why I shall have to wait up untill after midnight to watch Carlton v Essendon on television in Sydney ?

I know what you are going to say, you are just going to send back that tired old worn out bul**hit about how decisions regarding broadcasting are for Channel Seven alone to make. Well thats not good enough.

Make no mistake - the absolutely unsatisfactory arrangement regarding televising of this game into Northern States is a national disgrace and an utter scandal. Get that - its not 'a commercial decision' its a scandal and a scandal that you people seem perfectly happy to perpetrate.

Was not one of the reasons the AFL Commission was established in the first place (in 1985) was to better promote the game into non-traditional markets ?

How do you think you have a hope in hell of succeeding in the two most important markets in Australia when the game is not on television at a time when young children can watch it with thier parents ?

Why don't you do something about this ? - Why are you continually failing in your duty to promote this game into developing markets ?

Do you not think it is a disgrace and a scandal that residents of Australia's largest city, and residents of Australia's fastest growing city cannot watch Australia's most popular sport on telervision ? I think it's a scandal, why don't you ? And you are supposed to be the people that are entrusted to run the game in the best interests of all stakeholders in the game, and that includes Australian citizens who reside in NSW and Qld.

Do something about it - tell Channel Seven to lift their game or else take their broadcasting rights away.

The situation up here in Sydney is disgracefull - please, please, please for the good of this great game of ours, do something - could you ?

BA, Ch 9 wont be any different if they get the rights. You have seen what they do to the first session of any Engaland Ashes series Test. Bledisloe Cup rated better than Ess v. Car would rate in Sydney because Melbourne people are more sports minded. Its a fact.

Dan24, what about Anzac Day 1995. it is the second biggest crowd at a H & A and I think the third biggest crowd would be Coll v Rich Anzac Day 1977 @91,000.

Dan24, also dont forget the AFL Park game televised live between Coll v Ess in 1990 in Rd 19 which would have had a bigger crowd if at the MCG but they didnt do that in those days. That was also billed as the GF preview b/c Coll and Ess were the favourites for the flag most of the year.

Anyway BA, maybe you should get Optus if you really love the footy that much that you want to see two teams that are not your team play a H & A game live so desperately.

KS
BSA mighn't be able to get Optus where they live.
I rang Optus yesterday to find out when Perth will be getting it & was told it is still a couple of years away.
I have been waiting for Optus for years, just so I can watch football & not have to rely on bloody inept ch 7.

In Qld the time has been changed from 12.40 am to 10.30 friday night. So keep complaining the bastards might get the idea.

Bloodstained Angel, I absolutely agree with every thing you say but its going to be very hard to convince ignorant morons who abosolutely HATE the AFL or aerial ping pong as they so gleefully like to call it to put games on at a reasonable time let alone live!
My theory is that the execs. who work at 7 in Sydney are maybe a little afraid that the general public might actually like what they see and pick it up? They fully realize that putting a high profile AFL match on live would draw respectable ratings and therefore diminish their argument that nobody cares for footy up there.
They won't allow one game to be shown because their terrified that one would become two, two to three and so on. That to 7 in Sydney would be the most galling truth - significant numbers want to watch AFL.

Haven't heard a peep out of Colless either Gonzo, hmmmm

I dunno why he is so quiet over this, publicly anyway. I would hope he is doing his best behind the scenes to 'lean' on Channel Seven as much as possible. But I agree it would be nice for ordinary punters such as myself could know what the hell is going on sometimes.

Kevin Sooky,

The third biggest H&A crowd was 92,935 at Waverley (can you believe it) in 1981 between Collingwood and Hawthorn. It was on the Queens Birthday.

I still believe this Fridays match is the biggest H&A game in history.

In 1990, the televised match between Essendon and Collingwood was huge. I think both teams were 14-4 entering the match.

This Friday, Carlton is 15-4, and the Bombers are 19-0. Never before have two teams met this late in the season, having lost only 4 of a possible 38 games. Add to that the fact that they have won 31 premierships between them, and are the leagues two most successful clubs, and you have the biggest Home and Away game in history. Add to that als, the fact that it is now the biggest rivalry in football.

It is an enourmous match. Imagine if the Blues had beaten the Dogs, and had entered the match with 14 consecutive victories. That would have been unprecedented. That won't affect matters too much. After all, they only "just" lost to the Doggies, and most people put that down to the umpires anyway !
