Carlton 1979-82; Why don't we rate them?

Hard to say. Had the Jezza/ Harris blowup not occurred the Blues may not have hired David Parkin as coach. Could they have kept winning with Jezza at the helm? Maybe not.
Fair point.
But i think most competent coaches could have done pretty well with the players they had at their disposal.

All true but Jezza would most likely be an effective short term coach. Tactically very limited but a decent motivator and brutally tough on the players at times. I've heard Marclure say that the team was so good in 79 all that was required to ward off any potential loss was the fear of Jezza and how training would be the following week. That kind of approach inevitably wanes with the players fairly quickly. Parkin was the perfect man for the Blues in 81.

When we talk about the great teams over time we hear about Collingwood in the 20s and 30s, Melbourne in the 50s and 60s, Hawthorn in the 80s and in recent times the Lions, Cats and Hawks.

For those of us who remember the Carlton team from 1979-1982 was one of the greatest teams of all time. The team had so many champions, so many big game players who did it when it counted and were a brilliant team.
They are every bit as good if not better than the recent dominant teams of Lions, Cats and Hawks. I actually rate them higher.
Not sure why some leave them out of the equation. Absolute champion team.
Possibly because most BF posters weren't alive then. I was and what I will say is that Carlton had the benefit of an open cheque book, as did Hawthorn in that era. It gave them a huge unfair advantage

...Carlton were the biggest and best of all the Victorian clubs, but they lost their mojo the moment the draft came into play and a few rules had to be adhered too. Some dodgy dealings and a lack of acceptance of the National competition has cost them dearly....
The rot probably started with George Harris. They were still strong on field for a while but their culture killed them.

It sure did.
And I think it's take until SOS has come back to the footy club for us to have a true and proper rebuild.

Kangaroos? Collingwood? Many clubs had an open cheque book.

That is nothing to do with how great they were between 79-82. They tried to buy Premiershios, so did we, so did Richmond, so did North, so did everyone. They just bought better.

Bang on. It was simply the way interstate talent was identified and recruited, along with plenty from that Carlton era being developed through Carlton's own zone and in no way bought, as the rewritten story gets told these days from younger guys who probably have little clue what they're talking about.

Ironic it's coming from a Geelong fan now given the way they've been snaffling other club's players of late.

What the ... o_O

Carltons list was the primary reason for finishing so poorly this year. Too many plodders...Not to mention sacking Malthouse didn't help

Hawks and Cats of modern day are more impressive as the whole competition is on a relatively level playing field with a salary cap and drafting.

Well geelong had father sons who they didn't have to use high draft picks on. So technically they shouldn't be included in the argument if carlton are not because they played under the rules that were around in the late 70's/80's

Carlton has lost alot of respect as we all now know that most of their premierships where bought. Geelong 2007-11 were a great side but got VERY lucky with the father son rule nabbing the ablett boys, scarlett and hawkins -all under the old system and paid bugger all for them. Brisbane were gifted numerous draft concessions/ All thing being equal regardless of this saturdays result Hawthorn is clearly greatest side of the modern era.

All things being equal the 2004 Port Adelaide team is one of the greatest teams ever assembled

If father son was such a big deal for Geelong, perhaps it's Hawthorn who have benefitted most from changes to the rules like Free Agency which has nabbed Lake and Frawley. Priority draft picks which nabbed the Hawks Roughead, Hodge and Ellis plus the timely introduction of GWS and GC to keep other sides down just as the hawks were hitting their straps.

Don't pretend like the Hawks haven't been beneficiaries of fortuitous rule changes to get where they are now.

I rate Essendon's 84/85 flags as a brilliant acheivement, obviously because it is a difficult thing to do in itself. On top of that though, it was all done against one of the greatest sides in history, who didn't have off years in that time (played in both those GFs against the Dons) and had already pulled Essendon's pants down in a big way in 1983.

To be named in the bracket of the teams mentioned in this thread though, they needed another flag in that era. Bloody Fitzroy!

Interested in Carltons cheque book tactics that bought a Premiership. Players such as

Bruce Doull - Jacana
Wayne Johnston- Wandin North
Alex Jesaulenko- an Austrian /Ukranian migrant from Canberra
Geoff Southby- Canberra
Rod Ashman- Eaglehawk
Robert Walks- Coburg
David McKay- Newlyn

Shall we keep going?

I checked. Not one member of the 1979 premiership team came from another VFL club. All were recruited and developed by the blues (although a couple played senior footy interstate).

In recent times Brisbane, Geelong and Hawthorn can't say the same.

Exactly. People associate the Carlton spending spree of the mid and late 80s with the 79-82 era. They are so wrong.

20 straight wins. 1 loss all year. Destroyed teams in the finals. Carlton lost two games. Just got over the line against the Bears in the QF. Essendon's season slightly more impressive.

Yes then Collingwood going through a Home and Away season undefeated is even more impressive. Thanks for confirming.

A far far greater team than your 2000 team.
