Adam Hartlett
Details:
Club: Edwardstown/West Adelaide
DOB: 22 April 1986 Hgt: 194cm Wgt: 83kg
Position: Full Back/Full Forward
Natural Foot: Right

Honours:
South Australia 2003
National Draft Camp 2003, 2004

Strengths: Hartlett is an aggressive key position player who can play either end of the ground, although I think he may be more suited as a forward. He has a huge leap on him and reasonable pace enabling him to lead well or rebound out of defence.

Adam knows how to use his body in a marking contest and is a good shot for goal. In fact his kicking is usually good in all situations. Kicked 16 goals in three SANFL Under 19 finals.

Weaknesses: Struggled in the carnival, perhaps due to injury. Can be exposed for lack of footy smarts in defence at times.

Footydraft.com comment: Average carnival might seem him slip down the pecking order, but I think he still has a lot to offer. His huge leap and good kicking means he is worth a look.

Good idea to pair two West Adelaide boys up. Should help them to settle in. A bit worried about the better as a forward line as that might apply to Livo as well. Was injured as suggested so a bad carnival can be excused.

Pick 73 - Chris Bryan
Sandringham
D.O.B 6-03-1982
No other stats available

Pick 77 - Anthony Raso
Dandenong Stingrays
D.O.B 17-04-1987
Height - 199cm
Weight - 77kg

Interesting to note that a couple of players widely touted as top20 picks didn't get selected at all:

Ruory Kirkby
Heath Grundy

http://www.footydraft.com/players.php?player=anthony_raso&dr=n

Anthony Raso
Details:
Club: Mt Eliza/Dandenong
DOB: 17 April 1987 Hgt: 190cm Wgt: 75kg
Position: Half Forward Flank
Natural Foot: Left

Honours:
State Screening Camp 2004

TAC Stats:
2004: 7 games, 14 goals, 13.9 PPG

Strengths: Raso is a developing tall forward with very little exposure, having played just 7 TAC Cup games. However, he showed real promise in those games, including bags of 4 and 5 goals.

Anthony is a tremendous set shot for goal, and is a long kick as well. Moves well around the ground and can take a spectacular grab. Only qualified for the draft by 2 weeks, so plenty of scope for improvement.

Weaknesses: Very inexperienced still and needs to put on a lot of weight. Would be a punt on potential drafting him at this stage.

Footydraft.com comment: Looked promising in his few outings, but clubs may want to see him for another year before drafting him. Then again, it wouldn't surprise to see someone punt on him very late in the draft.

Know nothing about Bryan though. 22 hey?

From Inside Football

Selection 73 - Chris Bryan
(Sandringham/Frankston), 6th March 1982, 198cm, 91kg

"Chris is a big bloke who plays ruck and up forward. He's and athletic player who moves around the ground well and is a lovely kick." - Frankston Coach Brett Lovett

#9 Jordan Russell - Midfielder
#25 Adam Hartlett - Tall defender/forward
#41 Luke Blackwell - Midfielder
#73 Chris Bryan - Ruck/Forward
#77 Anthony Raso - Tall forward
#78 Pass

Nice variety there with all areas addressed. Hartlett was obviously picked as a defender but can kick a lot of goals. All players are supposed to be good kicks. Russell is an interesting one as we seem to have gone for a safe midfielder rather than a spectacular midfield. The Blues obviously are looking to play accountable football rather than spectacular but inconsistent football with these selections.

More importantly, no Spriggs, no McGough, no Porter.

Knobel the likely selection in the PSD.

As a West Adelaide supporter, I can tell you that you've picked up two good players. Russell and Hartlett played juniors at West with Cooney and Beau Waters. Russell played league this year, has terrific pace and good skills.

Hartlett had an ordinary carnival only because of an injury. Is still growing and is the type to break a game open. In one of the junior finals this year, the scores were 3 goals each at half-time. He kicked 5 from full-forward, mainly from big marks, in the third quarter. A wonderful kick, too.

yeah a number of talls there. With these picks, our existing young talls like Deluca, plus our Irish duo - we've got a great young pool of key positions, hopefully a lot of them succeed.

Bryan and Raso we likely would've had virtually pencilled in prior to the draft. One pick saved for Knobel in the PSD.

Just to round out the footydraft bios (there wasn't one for Chris Bryan).

Jordan Russell
Details:
Club: Edwardstown/West Adelaide
DOB: 6 November 1986 Hgt: 186cm Wgt: 74kg
Position: Half Back Flank
Natural Foot: Right

Honours:
South Australia 2004
National Draft Camp 2004

Strengths: Russell is a medium sized defender who can also play on a wing. He is a good mark, has a lot of pace and can kick pretty well on either foot. He had a very solid carnival, playing three good games without ever really standing out.

Jordan is already playing SANFL senior football and will be a good size once he puts on a few kilos.

Weaknesses: Again, nothing really outstanding about his game, tends to be solid rather than spectacular. Can make some poor choices with disposal.

Footydraft.com comment: Possible versatility, speed and marking ability should appeal to AFL clubs.

also from Burgan's afl.com phantom draft:

A midfielder with genuine pace and fine skills, Russell spent most of the season in West Adelaide's senior side, while he also represented South Australia at this year's National Bank's AFL under-18 championships. His pace shone through at the recent Draft Camp when he finished in the top three per cent for speed testing over five, 10 and 20 metres. He also recorded a time of 2.89 seconds for the 20-metre dash.

Good to hear he's pacy.

Apparently that time was faster than Judds so hopefully that means something!

Thanks r&b. In your opinion, is Hartless better as a defender or a forward? It is easy to get swayed by bags of goals but Silvagni was a pretty handy forward in his time too. I am sure the Blues have drated Hartlett as a defender to take the pressure of Thornton. Can he play on the last line or is better switching between CHB and CHF?

I think he is a better forward, although he's the type of player who could play FF, CHF, CHB or Full Back. I know that Essendon were interested in drafting him last year, but he got an injury late in the year. He would be a very adaptable key position player. Takes a very strong mark, has reasonable pace and is a great kick.

Cheers.

Just noticed that I spelt his name Hartless in the last post. I hope that wasn't a freudian slip.

Hartlett sounds like exactly the type we need. Capable of pack marks, good kick and can play both ends. Sounds like a Jade Rawlings who can kick :) Happy with that. He's 88kg, I'd say he's a year from being off a good playing weight.

We needed pace and good skills in the midfield, I think Russell provides that.

What's his ball-winning ability like?

Raso will take time to develop, but that's ok, he's bottom age.

Interesting to note both players are from the same club...will definitely help the transition, as they would've played together a bit and would know each other.

very rapped with both selections and the fact they are both mates (well hope so ne way or that could be awkward) means the transition will be much easier.

i think they both address deficiencies in our team ... russel with pace off half back and hartlett a key fwd/defender.

hope blackers makes it ... cos eckerman was still available at our 3rd round pick ... suprised he dropped that low.

I am excited about this Anthony Raso guy. Carlton has had a lot of success in picking players late in the draft in recent years and entirely based on that I am going to jump to the conclusion this guy should become a good player. They are saying he will take a bit of developing but he has good skills and with a bit of bulk will develop into a good player. Look forward to seeing Raso taking bags of marks and kicking bags of goals in seasons to come

ive played with and against raso at various stages and he has great speed and can take a great grab and also kicks the footy a long way

We won't know how well we drafted for a few years. Although no Spriggs and five untried youngsters is a good draft in my mind. They also complement eachother, so it should work out.

They reckon in 12 months time he had the potential to be rated as a first round pick. It's a bit of a gamble to snaffle him a year early but why not, it could come off.

Note, he won't join the squad, training etc til this time next year, once he's done year 12.

Not a bad gig for Raso. Will get paid 60k to carry on doing what he would have done next year for nothing ... play school football and complete year 12. That's pretty heady stuff for a 17 year old.

Didn't think we did too badly, certainly bolstered our "running stocks" as well as a probable backman. Due to uni exams I haven't had much time this month to go through the draft in fine detail but I'm pretty content with what I see.

Love that name, Roughead. Certainly looks like one too... kinda reminds me of my brother which is creepy.
