OK, time for Carlton's club focus thread.

See below for a summary of Carlton's player contract situations, as well as information about experience, ages and heights.

The data has been taken from FootyWire, and the spreadsheet will update itself when FootyWire is updated. It may contain some errors, and unfortunately we do not have the ability to update them so we just have to deal with what we're given.




According to this data, Carlton are:
- 10th tallest, averaging 188cm
- 15th heaviest, averaging 85.3kg
- 3rd youngest with an average age of 23.7 years
- 2nd least experienced, averaging 60.1 career games

My (brief) current thoughts:

1.

Retire - Kade Simpson
Delist - Darcy Lang, Matthew Lobbe, Jarrod Pickett, Andrew Phillips. Kym Lebois
Re-Sign - Jack Silvagni, Matthew Kennedy, Matthew Kreuzer, Liam Jones, Angus Schumacher, Jarrod Garlett, Caleb Marchbank, David Cuningham, Patrick Kerr, Dale Thomas, Levi Casboult, Hugh Goddard

2.

For mine there are three main gaps -

1) Experience
2) Small forwards
3) Outside run

And if we make the above changes, another gap appears -

4) Backup rucks

I suspect all of the above can and will be looked at via trade and free agency first. There are plenty of options out there but I'll throw a couple of names into the mix to get the discussion started.

Small forwards - Tom Papley, Jamie Elliott, Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti
Outside run - Brad Hill, Ed Langdon, Lewis Taylor, Brandon Ellis, Harry Cunningham
Rucks - Reilly O'Brien, Darcy Cameron, Max Lynch, Zac Smith

Lack of experience will fix itself naturally as we continue to get games into the kids we've spent a few years now recruiting heavily. But there are plenty of other names worth discussing - be it a superstar like Coniglio, veterans like Nathan Jones or David Mundy, or countless other players currently out of contract who we may look to bring in relatively cheaply - as we did with Newman last year.

What will it take to get it all done?

We've been pretty open about going after mature talent now after spending a few years hitting the draft heavily. And we're not going to muck around - all draft picks would be on the table, and we know we've got plenty of cash to attract free agents.

If we get rid of both Lobbe and Phillips it's certainly a position we'll need to bolster.

We'll have Kreuzer (who just re-signed for 2020) and TDK but not much other than part-timers in between.

We don't need a superstar but someone who can hold the fort whilst TDK develops. Would be happy enough with any of the 4 I mentioned in the OP, with Cameron having already been linked.

Those changes would make Carlton a significantly better side. Papley will be very tough however.

Real test of our improvement will be from here to the end of the season. At this stage the progress of the rebuild is firmly on track

CARLTON

High number of out of contract players here and some that can be considered lucky to get an extra year

Re-signings are as follows: Jack Silvagni, Kennedy, Jones, Marchbank, Newman, Cuningham, Phillips, Kerr, Cottrell, DeLuca, Gibbons, Simpson, Casboult & Thomas (rolling one years)

No real surprises in the re-signing I don't think. Silvagni I think has done enough this year to get an extension, needs to solidify a role in the 22 but.

The next handful up to Phillips just makes sense to give them multiple year extensions.

Phillips is definitely still required as back up for Kruezer, 2 year extension wouldn't be out of place. Kerr is worth a re-signing, hopefully it comes with some increased senior opportunity in 2020 if he is up to it.

The SSP and mid year signings can all get re-signed as rookies and or get elevated to senior list status. Deluca under the most pressure of the 3 I think.

Thomas is still OK with rolling contracts and Casboult the same as depth and experience. Simpson if he wants it is guaranteed of another year until he reaches the end.


TRADE

Wait and see which un-contracted players requests a move. Think stability is required but and wouldn't go trading away players unnecessarily.


DE-LIST

De-listings I have: Darcy, Lang, Angus Schumacher (re-rookie???), Jarrod Garlett, Matthew Lobbe, Hugh Goddard, Kym Lebois (re-rookie???

Lang is a possibility to get a rolling extension for some experience around a younger team, same with Schumacher who has the traits to persist with but is line ball.

Lebois hasn't come along as hoped for. Think his skill set is still required at the Blues however it will be a decision on if he can improve enough.

The Garlett experiment hasn't been fruitful unfortunately. Lobbe is probably in the de-list / retire category, better off getting a younger ruck in from the juniors that can be developed or a state league guy that is ready for the next step.

Goddard unfortunately hasn't worked either. Could be a player that is offered up to a team looking for KPD depth for peanuts

deluca hasn't shown much for me but gibbons i'd give two years.

The young midfielders will develop nicely too, Walsh, Dow , SPS, Setterfield, Stocker, Fisher and O’Brien too. Stephen & Jack would obviously be sensational additions to any team in the competition.
We’d be playing finals in a couple of years.

Silvagni has planned and built the list from basically ground zero.
Docherty and Cripps were the only 2 players with long term futures when the plan was tabled.

You would think based on the above list we lose Garlett, Kerr, Lebois, Lobbe and maybe Schumacher. On top of losing Pickett right after the mid season draft (Bugg was replaced) and retiring Daisy and Fas, that's 7-8 changes to the list.

I doubt any player is traded out.
