Data from footywire. To check the draft order see the thread here.

Footywire says: "While we make every effort to keep up to date with player contracts, it is likely that our data may at times be out of date, incomplete or inaccurate. If you find any player contracts that need updating, please let us know using our brand new contract submission form."

Not sure which way we'll go. Will be interesting to see.

I suspect we'll go with Lieu and Cripps will play with our VFL side.

Feels Good to be a destination club.

Would prefer it if we just hit the draft though, no real out of contract player that we could afford either through trade or SC means stands out. Amon would be alright, but think he is after a big pay day, so pass.

Do you think Lieu is still on the radar for the MSD? Or someone ready to go?

I don't think so, no. Unfortunately got injured right at the end of his stint at the club through the preseason and has only just returned. Think he's played the one VFL game on limited minutes since then.

Think we'll go in a different direction for the MSD.

With Weitering going down, after losing Liam Jones, Oscar McDonald and Mitch McGovern we are entirely exposed at full back. Hypothetical med season trade, what would we give up for a player like Sam Taylor..

Hutchy pretty strong on this last night on footy classified. Stated he believes they have the highest expenditure across their top 8 players in the AFL.

Salary cap pressure is evident across the league, with obviosu cases at Collingwood and GWS.

My question is, who gets squeezed out at Carlton? At a guess the top 8 highest paid would be:

Cripps
Walsh
Mckay
Curnow
Weitering
Williams
Saad
Cerra

Would any of them be moved on to clear space?

GWS' top 4 seem like a bigger issue.
At a guess - they keep them all and move on a mid-pricer or two, or at least extend contracts over a longer period to smooth out contract payments.

McGovern and Williams would go before any others. The rest are consistent and keep themselves in peak condition year round. The two of them alone is close to 1.5-1.6 Mil.

No idea who they are paying and how much but if thats the top 8 surely they aren't in trouble.

Can’t remember what panel show it was on last week but they used Adelaide as an example when stating that if they spend 800k+ on Rankine their top 2 paid players will be a dynamic small forward and Dawson off HBF. Then arguing that smart clubs make their big ticket items gun inside mids or the KPP at either end.

So one wonders how much are Carlton paying easy replaceable roles. You’d hope they haven’t blown the cap on Williams, Saad, Martin and McGovern

We'll be right.
McGovern only has 1 year to go. Martin 2, but was heavily front-loaded so on 300k a year now.
The Williams contract certainly isn't looking great for us at the moment though.
Even Gov you would assume was a front ended contract. I’m not sure why people even bring up Martin, he is now on stuff all now and Saad is worth every cent. Williams hurts atm.

We probably wouldn’t notice any of Fogarty, Curnow, Dow, Setterfield, Newnes and with the way things are atm Stocker leaving. That gives some cap relief.
TDK, McKay and Curnow are the interesting ones because all will get offered more then we will want to pay.

To be fair McGovern was one of the few that has been good when he’s played this year- Williams has been a disaster bought to be a genuine mid that lasted what 6 games? Plus he can’t stay on the field for a month

When teams are in the top 8, he's probably right, but in the Adelaide example, he's forgetting that Sloane would be our highest paid, and Laird wouldn't be far behind. Dawson is reported to be 650k, which is below Sloane, Laird and probably Walker too.

Additionally, we would expect Sloane and Walker to both retire at the end of next year, so I suspect we will have another $1.5-1.6m freed up to go and spend there too, so deals for Rankine, Dawson, Laird, ROB, Thilthorpe are all going to be heavily front ended, with a jump in cap space in '23 and '24 still which they will try to use to get a couple of top quality mids.

Contracts always look a lot worse when the player isn't on the field.
Our biggest problem is the injuries.

Lack of genuine onballers I would have thought is a bigger issue. You have the defenders and forwards. However let’s look at the midfield aside from the two superstars in Cripps and Walsh and it’s pretty barren. Hewett is okay but his back is always going to be an issue as a genuine mid. Stocker is a big fail of a pick, every club has them was drafted as that big bodied inside mid barely played a minute there.

Hewett has been extremely good for us. Kennedy solid. Cerra a bit disappointing this year, but he's young. Our midfield were smashing teams earlier in the year. We probably lack a bit of pace in there though.

Will Williams get another chance in there? Even just pinch hitting as part of the second rotation

Others will disagree but I think he should.

Maybe not as part of the first choice group but rotations and additional options are always good.

Adds real zip when fit which is a point of difference compared to most of our other mids.

Switch out Cerra for Gov and it's probably right.

We supposedly have around $500k free currently, which isn't too bad when you consider how high the TPP floor is and that people have constantly said that we couldn't sign more free agents or retain some of our out of contract players for a few years running. We've managed to do all of that.
Still have Jones on the books, which will come off this year. Gov's deal ends next year. Williams was front loaded, same as Martin (who isn't listed here, but would now be sub $400k).
I doubt anyone gets pushed out. Most are signed up. Ed Curnow likely to retire. A few delistings. If Curnow and McKay don't follow suit like Cripps and a few others with taking a bit less, then they'll only probably need around $200k each more than what they're on now.

I really don't see too much of a problem there. Williams and Gov contracts aren't great in hindsight, but it doesn't seem to have crippled us.
The only real issue would be if TDK wanted a payday. He's shown plenty of promise, but he isn't worth some of the numbers the media are throwing around. If somebody wanted to offer him over $600k and he wanted us to match, I'd hope the club doesn't. If he'd cemented the #1 ruck spot, maybe, but he's only got it because Pitto has been injured.
