The Italians and Greeks who are between 70s and 90s are immigrants who wouldn’t know much about footy, most of the “wog” blues fans would be between 35-55..they are the children of the immigrants who largely grew up in Brunswick, coburg, Pascoe vale etc. theirs heaps of them they just haven’t had much to get excited about. Would definately not call it a dying off fan base.

Absolutely Melbourne, one flag since 1964, carl**n fans spoiled in comparison. Absolute no brainer in the loyalty stakes.
Well, that’s one way to look at it. The other is that Melbourne’s loyal fans are the only ones left. The bandwagoners ditched them years ago. This was a club, that in the 60s was second to Collingwood in support. Where did they all go?

The crap clubs always have a greater percentage of loyal supporters. The loyal ones are the only ones left that haven’t ditched them.

Personally I'd rather have a decent on field team to support than brag about our supporter base.

I can't begrudge Dees fans for their sucess, in fact if i had a 2nd team it would be Melbourne. I wish the late Jim Stynes was here to enjoy it, he laid all the groundwork for MFC's resurgence as a football club, even when he was fighting a futile battle for his own life.

Tell you what, there will plenty of tears shed when The Demons win their next flag, and i am not ashamed to admit i will have some salty water in my tear ducts.

MFC and their long suffering fans have done it the hard way. Only a heartless bastard would begrudge them a flag.

Nope. Carlton is still third. Just because their fans aren't going to games because their team is shit, doesn't mean they have all died. They are still alive. The single best gauge on supporter base is the Supercoach club supporter rankings. Unlike Morgan surveys which survey a few thousand people, this is a defacto "survey" of 300,000 people.

Melbourne have been last for a while now. Young people just refused to barrack for the Dees after the mid 1960's. Carlton have always been a supporter powerhouse.

SUPERCOACH CLUB SUPPORTER NUMBERS (just counting the 10 Victorian clubs)

Collingwood 23,257.........16.33% of Victorians support Collingwood
Essendon 22,866............16.05% of Victorian support Essendon
Carlton 17,497...............12.28% of Victorians support Carlton
Richmond 15,824...........11.11% of Victorians support Richmond
Hawthorn 15,787............11.08% of Victorians support Hawthorn
Geelong 13,836..............9.72% of Victorians support Geelong
St.Kilda 9,595................6.74% of Victorians support St.Kilda
Nth.Melb 8,699..............6.11% of Victorians support North
W.Bulldogs 7,914...........5.56% of Victorians support the Bulldogs
Melbourne 7,121............5.00% of Victorians support Melbourne
Your gonna argue according to SuperCoach that nth Melbourne and the bulldogs have a bigger supporter base than Melbourne. Wow

Not just Supercoach, but pretty much any evidence you want to look at. Young people just don't barrack for the Demons anymore. At least North have grown their supporter base with some consistent success over the last 40 years.

No one barracks for the Demons anymore.

i thought I saw a report a couple of years ago that said Melbourne did have the lowest supporter base. Marginally behind North, Bulldogs and St Kilda

You're right. Must have been someone else that got 90k at the two mcg finals and close to 70/30 melbourne split in the first, and 60/40 in the second.

They only thing clear there is that you are an absolute moron if you're using Herald Sun/Supercoach numbers to try make a point.
Yep especially considering that the stereotypical Melbourne (to a greater extent) and St Kilda (to a lesser extent) supporter demographics would be more likely to read the Age which will skew the numbers.

Carlton would be the 3rd most supported club in SA after the Crows and Port. They are very well supported outside Victoria. Their brown paper bag era bought them a lot of interstate players and supporters.
Easily!!

They are also the type who turn up to a game with their jacket done up, if Carlton win the colours come out, if they don’t they slink off. Also guaranteed to talk about Bradley.

My reading of the term supporter base means it includes all fans whether they go to games or buy memberships or not.
Attendance and membership are hugely skewed by current performance so are not a great indicator of supporter base.
What good is a person who says they support a club, but show no interest? Just look at Sydney. They are the biggest club in the land if you are going by that definition.
Plus, teams like Essendon, Hawthorn, Richmond and Collingwood have pissy little 1 game memberships which adds to their numbers overall.
Cant derive supporter bases from membership numbers.
I'm curious to which 1 game memberships Richmond provides that would count in the AFL audit. Come to think of it, what type of membership does Richmond, Collingwood, Eesendon and Hawthorn provide which Carlton doesn't?

I think most Victorian clubs provide similar packages.

Just a comment on how bs a lot of the memberships numbers are.

My gf is a Swedish engineering student who upon arriving in Melbourne was given free tickets to an Essendon game. After submitting her email for the tickets, she and about 15 other exchange students became Essendon 'members' complete with lanyards and all.

There would have been hundreds possibly thousands more 'members' like them.

When taken with the ridiculous Crows' numbers, it's all a bit of a joke.

Like most clubs; when they're unsuccessful the membership figures drop.

I'd warrant if Carlton had finished Top 4 they'd be right up with Collingwood / Essendon around that 70 - 80k region. Hell even being a basketcase they have 10k more signed up members than Melbourne.

Melbourne are an old club, they're not a big one.

Finals crowds prove nothing. I was there at both games barracking for Melbourne, as were many neutrals

Melbourne have the lowest supporter base of the 10 Victorian clubs.

Absolute rubbish mate.

Oh and in conjunction with your previous rubbish post, I could understand if melbourne had dropped in membership after the previous 8 years. Yet there has been Incremental improvement on that base as well.

Couple that with a fixture that has been horrible to us the past few years financially (deservedly), yet the supporter base continues to grow, as does turning that into memberships.

Unless you've looked at a Fairfax poll or something less relevant, you're either talking absolute rubbish, or have NFI. I'm thinking a similar blend of the two.

Carlton have been poor for a generation. All the little glory seeking kiddies will be Hawthorn supporters these days.

No doubt a lot of Blues will come out of the woodwork when they start winning but they are not a big 4 club anymore.
agreed, and to a degree Geelong and Collingwood.

Its not rubbish it's 100% true, based on facts, evidence and logic.

Absolute rubbish mate.

So what? All membership numbers for all clubs have increased in that time. Buying memberships has became more of a cultural learned value each year these days. Far more than it was. Tell me a club whose membership numbers havn't increased? Just one.

Absolute rubbish mate.

The supporter base ins't growing. It's been declining for 50 years. Melbourne have only has ONE winning season in the last 12 years (2018). Success is what drives support. How can support for a club be growing when they have only had one winning season in over a decade? People don't choose to support teams that are losing

We did see some enthusiastic support from Melbourne's tiny support base this year as they came out in greater numbers to support a good team. And fair enough. When you have been shit for 12 years, of course the existing fans are going to turn up in greater numbers.

But the overall numbers of Melbourne's supporter base are declining and have been declining for half a century.

Unless you've looked at a Fairfax poll or something less relevant, you're either talking absolute rubbish, or have NFI. I'm thinking a similar blend of the two.
No need to be rude. I'm just stating the facts. Melbourne are the least supported Victorian club. There is no reason to suggest the Herald-Sun numbers are wrong.

After all, Collingwood, Essendon, Carlton, Richmond are 1,2,3,4, according to those numbers and that is universally accepted to be true. So, Why would Melbourne (in last spot) be wrong, but every other club is in the right spot??

Why is Melbourne being last on the Supercoach poll (which is a defacto survey of 300,000 people, not simply a small sample of 3,000) be the ONLY incorrect position? Clearly the order is accurate. Anyone can see that. The big clubs are at the top and the small clubs are at the bottom.

I repeat: So, Why would Melbourne (in last spot) be wrong, but every other club is in the right spot??

This official survey from Morgan Gallup from 2017.

These survey tend to bounce around each year a bit, based on the previous years success, but there is still an overall gauge towards the historically successful clubs.

As you can see, Essendon and Collingwod are 1-2 on this one for the Vic clubs. It is nowhere near as accurate as the Supercoach numbers. Nowhere near. But it is still a good guide.

Guess who is last of the Victorian clubs? They are last on EVERY survey

have you not seen what has happened to richmond when they started winning again? same thing if not bigger will happen to carlton IF they can ever get to that level again.
There are still plenty of people around who remember Carlton's last successful era/s, and they are young enough to have influenced their children to be Carlton fans.

2-3 generations have passed since Melbourne were successful, this usually results in the next generations going in other directions and teams

Carlton. Not even a contest.

Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond and Carlton still have the most support in Victoria in that order.
