Carlton and Melbourne - who has the greater supporter base

Appreciate the effort, but I’m not reading all of that.

That's because you know you're defeated.

Essendon have more supporters than Richmond.

I have proved it with evidence, morgan surveys, official crowd statistics, and logic.

You've curled yourself up in the corner hoping this conversation goes away.

If I could offer you some advice - change your opinion to suit what the evidence and the facts say. Don't keep your incorrect opinion, just because you "want" it to be correct - that's the best advice I can offer you.

To do this, you have to put your pride on the back burner and just admit, that you've been defeated with facts and logic.

Wait, so Richmond will tread water despite having a strong H&A season and signing the biggest FA, but Collingwood will miraculously add 25,000 because they made a GF?

I see.

Mate Collingwood is bigger then Richmond. Look at every single survey and social media site forms Collingwood are bigger around Australia. Collingwood have supporters is every part of Australia . Collingwood hold the 5 biggest home and away attendance records of all time. Richmond could not even break the pies record after a premiership. In Richmond premiership year Richmond finished with 1,024,000 whilst Collingwood who finished 13th finished with 1,003,000 after round 23!!!

The only club who comes close to Collingwood for nation wide support is Essendon. In every fan survey like Roy Morgan Collingwood has been the most popular Victorian club 9 out of the last 10 years and the pies are well in front of Richmond.

Gee Richmond are not bigger the Collingwood and Essendon. In Melbourne their ain’t much difference in support but around Australia Collingwood is the biggest club followed by Essendon.

Look at how many times during the home and away season each club has drawn over 1 million people during the home and away season;

Collingwood 21 times
Essendon 15 times
Richmond 6 times
Carlton 3 times.

Also Collingwood is the only club to have drawn over 1.3 million people during the home and away season in their premiership year 2010. Richmond with their 100,000 members could only draw 1,194,000 fans with is the 6th biggest of all time.

Collingwood have drawn over 1.2 million fans 5 times in 2007, 2008 (finished 8th after the H&A season) 2010, 2011-12!!

In terms of crowd drawing power when all clubs a flying

1. Collingwood
2. Essendon
3. Richmond
4. Carlton
5. Hawthorn
6. Geelong
7. Melbourne
8. St.kilda
9. Bulldogs
10. North Melbourne

In terms of post popular Victorian club in Australia just look at social media sites Facebook, instagram and twitter. The only clubs that have over 600,000 social media followers in Australia are;

Collingwood 671,000 ( fb 355,000, Twitter 126,000, instagram 190,000)

Essendon 634,000 ( fb 349,000, Twitter 129,000, instagram 156,000)

Richmond are ranked 4th behind hawthorn with 554,000 ( 272,000 Facebook, 92,000 twitter, 190,000 instagram).

You can't really argue logic with some people.

Posters like Nobu just pushes a narrative that he wants to be true. Pride means people like him can't change their opinion to suit the truth. Pride is a bitch. Pride forces humans to act irrationally, even when confronted with the truth.

We all know what the truth is. There is a mountain of evidence, crowd stats, surveys etc that show that Richmond is at best third and probably 4th for true supporter base numbers.

There is a fair gap between the big-2 (Coll-Ess) and third.

My old foe Dan26 is back. Reminds me of the days when we use to argue whether Collingwood or Essendon were a bigger club. But Atleast we both had valid reasons to back up or cases tho.

Unlike this freo fans who is facinated by Richmond.

Richmond in Melbourne are about the same size as Collingwood and Essendon. These 3 clubs could easily argue who is the biggest club in Melbourne but around Australia Collingwood and Essendon are massive around the country.

If Richmond were so big then they should of smashed Collingwood’s attendance record of 1,306,604 in the home and away season in 2010!!

Yet Richmond drew the 6th biggest of all time in 2018. The top 5 are all held by the biggest club in Victoria.......Collingwood

even in a thread about melbourne, there are more posts about the big 4 clubs than anything about the OP lol.

Answer to the topic Carlton are bigger then Melbourne. When Carlton do get their act together they will be drawing over 1 million people through the gates like they did in 2009-2011!!

They are the 4th biggest club in Victoria and part of the big 4. Only the big 4 Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond and Carlton are the only clubs to break over 1 million people through the gates. If Melbourne can break over 1 million fans during the home and away season then they could be considered to be a big club. Think they will be the 4th biggest drawing club in 2019 with between 850-900,000 fans turning up to their games. Will be behind

Collingwood and Richmond who should aim for 1.2 million and Essendon 1.1 million.

I'd think its fair to say that Carlton have a bigger supporter base. A fair percentage of the Victorian population of Italians and Greeks rally behind Carlton in terms of the overall numbers, even though many do not purchase club memberships. Id say with the inclusion of the club membership tallies, Carlton could comfortably sit ahead of Melbourne if you could poll every single AFL supporter in the country, which we know is not possible nor realistic.

Carlton have more supporters but Melbourne will have a better attendance record in 2019 and 2020.

A lot of Blues fans are dormant ATM.

Geelong and Dees would be a better comparison.

Melbourne have never had a huge supporter base where as it wasn't that long ago Carlton were one of the highest. The best way to tell supporter numbers is through social media following which indicates Carlton are still fairly high. The thing is that Carlton are so bad and have been so bad for so long that their membership and attendances are poor. Carlton are a bit of a sleeping giant, when they get good again things will be very strong for them supporter wise. Melbourne have been down a long time, they don't have terrible following, they should be strong next season so I think we will see what they can do following wise.

From 1955 to 1964 Collingwood, Melbourne and Essendon were the biggest clubs

Wrong.

Richmond's Grand Final drought lasted form 1983-2016.

Richmond outdraw Essendon in 1983, 2013, 2015*, 2016, 2017*, 2018

Essendon outdrew Richmond in:

1984
1985
1986
1987
1988
1989
1990
1991
1992
1993
1994
1995
1996
1997
1998
1999
2000
2001
2002
2003
2004
2005
2006
2007
2008
2009
2010
2011
2012
2014

And 2017 and 2015 barely even counts as Richmond attendance "wins" anyway as they crowd for both clubs were almost identical in those years

2017
Rich: 1,024667
Ess: 1,019,667 (despite finishing lower on ladder and NOT having the MCG as a home ground)

2015
Rich: 1,054,354
Ess :1,054,044 (despite Essendon finishing 10 spots lower on the ladder and NOT having the MCG as a home ground)

Those two years are effectively tied for attendance,

So, over Richmond's 34 year grand final drought from 1983-2016, there were:

- Two tied years: (2015, 2017)
- 4 clear wins to Richmond
- 30 clear wins to Essendon

Because Essendon have consistently outdrawn Richmond over 3 decades even in some years where Richmond finished above Essendon on the ladder.

Even from the period 2005-2016, where Essendon won less than 40% of their games, they still outdrew a more successful Richmond.

Good. Now you that you have been shown the truth you can change your narrative to suit what the facts are.

Mate the 2015 attendance is Richmond v Collingwood not Essendon lol

In 2015 Essendon drew 894,335

Collingwood was only 300 behind Richmond in 2015 and Richmond made finals and Collingwood finished 11th

Apologies. My error.

The 2017 season was the year where there was 5,000 between Richmond and Essendon, with Collingwood 3rd.

Those supporter poll stats are misleading, a lot of non-football people would just name a club because they live in that suburb...Melbourne disadvantaged in that respect. Membership and attendance only numbers that matter.

Melbourne supporters were hiding when they were sh!t.
Now they are up and about, the support rises.

Carlton support was massive when they dominated.
Now the crowds have dropped off since they turned sh!t.

Thats how football rolls for everyone.

Ask Port Adelaide, won the flag in 2004, by 2006 they were covering 10,000 seats with Port Power tarps.

GWS the exception. When they were bad the crowds were sh!t. Now they are good, the crowds are still sh!t.

3. Membership tally show us how many of their fans are putting money into their club. However some clubs have incredibly poor conversion rates from fans into paying members( Carlton) or are limited by ground size (geelong, interstate sides) or by MCC Members not counting (Melbourne espeically).
.

Membership tally isn't a great indicator of this. I mean you sign a kid up to auskick and select the team they support and they are officially counted as a member. Membership revenue is a much better guide imo

Carlton by a mile but Melbourne could close in over the next few years until Carlton improves.

Melbourne has a very concentrated fan base that is highly engaged. It's more than 60% that attend matches whereas Carlton's is much lower.

Melbourne is tough to gauge because you have a support base spread almost exclusively within Melbourne whereas Carlton would have high numbers across the country.

A better camparison would be Melbourne vs Hawthorn or Geelong. IMO Hawthorn's support numbers are greatly inflated. You would think they're as big as Richmond or Collingwood or Essendon but then you go to a match and it's fairly even, 50/50.

We got a glimpse back in 2011 how big Carlton is. Home attendance average of 53,212 (585,337) and total season attendance of 1,090,169 shows when they're going well there's a large following for them.

Essendon do not have more fans Australia wide than Carlton. IMO it is Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon then Richmond.

Below is the total social media followers for each club;

Adelaide fb 282,000, Twitter 148,000, instagram 114,000 = 544,000

Brisbane fb 136,000, Twitter 80,000, instagram 68,000 = 284,000

Carlton fb 270,000, Twitter 108,000, instagram 151,000 = 529,000

Collingwood fb 355,000, Twitter 126,000, instagram 190,000 = 671,000

Essendon fb 349,000, Twitter 128,000, instagram 155,000 = 632,000

Fremantle fb 213,000, Twitter 73,000, instagram 97,000 = 383,000

Geelong fb 198,000, Twitter 78,000, instagram 135,000 = 411,000

Gold Coast fb 101,000, Twitter 55,000, instagram 59,000 = 215,000

GWS fb 103,000, Twitter 51,000, instagram 65,000 = 219,000

Hawthorn fb 337,000, Twitter 93,000, instagram 159,000 = 589,000

Melbourne fb 139,000, Twitter 61,000, instagram 81,000 = 281,000

North Melbourne fb 151,000, Twitter 66,000, instagram 82,000 = 299,000

Port Adelaide fb 188,000, Twitter 101,000, instagram 89,000 = 378,000

Richmond fb 272,000, Twitter 90,000, instagram 190,000 = 552,000

St.kilda fb 160,000, Twitter 77,000, instagram 78,000 = 315,000

Sydney fb 278,000, Twitter 97,000, instagram 116,000 = 491,000

West Coast fb 310,000, Twitter 79,000, instagram 154,000 = 543,000

Western bulldogs fb 168,000, Twitter 61,000, instagram 106,000 = 335,000

In order from biggest club to smallest is;

Collingwood 671,000 followers
Essendon 632,000
Hawthorn 589,000
Richmond 552,000
Adelaide 544,000
West coast 543,000
Carlton 529,000
Sydney 491,000
Geelong 411,000
Fremantle 383,000
Port Adelaide 378,000
Western bulldogs 335,000
St.kilda 315,000
North Melbourne 299,000
Brisbane 284,000
Melbourne 281,000
GWS 219,000
Gold Coast 215,000

But Melbourne imo have the most engaged fans. When winning they draw very similar to Geelong and draw bigger crowds then st.kilda, bulldogs and north. I think this comes down too;

1) having wealthy supporters
2) majority of their fans base lives in the inner east / south east from south Yarra to camberwell down bayside from south Yarra to Brighton. The highest concentration of their members live in glen iris, hawthorn, toorak, Pahran, Malvern, Armadale, elsternwick, Elwood, balaclava, Brighton
