Carlton: Are they tanking?

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

You know what sucks about this. It probably will bring about the scapping of the pripority pick, and it will punish clubs like Adeladie, West Coast, Port Adelaide and co who actually try to win every game. But one day one of these clubs will finish bottom and they will be punished for the manipulation of the system by Carlton and co.

Us Blues can't win either way.

I just thought we were generally shit. Hence the ladder positions over the past 5-6 years. But, apparently we're a good side that tanks.

Laughable how people claim we tanked against Port. Playing the eventual runner-up at AAMI, and we lose by 3 goals, after leading. Beaten by a superior team? No, that couldn't be the reason......we tanked

I supposed we tanked the 117 point humiliation against Brisbane, too

Fevola playing on with a groin injury, before finally going in for surgery. Thornton likewise. How is that tanking?

What are we? A poor side? Or a team of tankers?

We can't win either way.

It's been 5 years since Carlton last made the finals. As you have a 50% chance of making the finals each season the chance of them being that bad without a little bit of effort to be that bad is 3.125%.

Make of that what you will.

lmao, while technically right, you're still wrong.

There is no way teams such as the Tigers, Demons and Blues have just as much chance as making the top 8 as say the Cats, Hawks or Saints.

And did everyone here conviently forget we had draft picks taken from us meaning rebuilding was alot harder? yes they were rightfully taken from us, but taken none the less.

@The poster saying we're there to make numbers and we're a waste of space - Give me a ****ing break. There is no way Carlton will ever fold.

Still over 5 years these things should even up, that of course assumes the club tries to win games.

Ever looked into the blokes you did draft over that period though? It's not like you did well with the picks you had ...

Also, Carlton supporters lose their right to brag over the 95 premiership if they're going to whinge about losing picks causing them their current situation.

Also, I think you'll find perenially successful teams such as Adelaide, Geelong and Port would have had comparable picks over the same period. These teams however play finals a majority of years, probably because they play to win.

Never say never

wait wait wait. Are we talking about Carlton? The club that is literally living off a rich old cardboard tycoon? The club that has holes in its pockets and can't win a game?

To say Carlton will fold is foolish I know, I would say they would relocate or merge.

So we've gone from tanking, to 'can't win a game'. Can you people make up your minds.

And I fail to see how we're living off our president. We have one of the biggest sponsorships in the game in Hyundai and a number of other very benifical sponsorship deals.

Not to mention our terrific level of support (even in the clubs darkest period). We don't have to compete with just one other club for supporters but 9 others.

To say Carlton will fold is indeed foolish. Saying we will relocate or merge is just as foolish. Please, other crows supporters, help me out. If he won't listen to me, surely there is some sensible supporters out there know this will never happen. As much as you wish it to ;). I know it pains people to see Carlton doing well.

I was kidding about relocating, Blues are on the protected AFL species list. Roo's, Bulldogs and Saints are on the menu though.

BTW your president was the only reason you guys turned a profit last year, he pleged something like $1m. Thats huge.

Don't you remember when your president came out and said the Blues were in the doldrums. I think that was in 2006 or something. One of the biggest sponserships in the league in Hyundai...?

Pratt's main misson is to make sure that when he leaves, there is enough competent people in place to make sure Carlton is a powerhouse again off-field. His input now, will help make that happen.

And yes, I believe our sponsorship with Hyundai is one of the biggest in the league. I remember Greg Swann (our CEO, and one of those people Pratt has put in place ;)) saying it was a 'massive get' for Carlton.

Btw, you're not wrong about the Saints, Roos, or Doggies. I would even add the Demons to that list. There only saving grace is that they are called Melbourne, and even that is not enough imo.

Btw @ this whole topic - I used to think we had tanked, then we didn't and now I'm undecided. At the time I thought it was stupid if we didn't lose the games, but now I think more and more, I really hope we didn't. To purposely lose a match truly is against the spirit of the game. I'm going to give Ratten and co. benefit of the doubt and believe what they say.

well, obviously Carlton will never relocate or merge, they are historically protected and have the membership numbers to continue. i think the point some people are trying to make, is that, if Carlton are in fact tanking and this poor form continues, then they don't deserve to be here as much as a team like Kangas or WB, because these teams play their hearts out and have to work so much harder to stay in this competition.

I always used to have a soft spot for Carlton, especially with SA blokes such as Bradley and Camporeale playing for them. But over the past few seasons, their performance on and off the field has been a disgrace on such a level that not even Richmond would sink to. Sure they were stripped of a few draft picks but FFS look how well we've done considering how our 1st rounders are normally duds.

I think that most people will agree that while Carlton were legitimately bad in 2005 and for much of 2006, last year really should have seen a considerable improvement and even if they lost a lot of close ones, their percentage of 74 was simply not good enough for a club that has been out of the finals for 6 years.

I don't rate Ratten as coach - they are still winless under him. Long term, million dollar plus contracts for players such as Fevola and Judd will cause them panic when Murphy, Walker, Waite, Fisher and Carazzo come out of contract.

Were they tanking? IMO YES because of the fact that they had more to gain by losing (at least in terms of list management) than winning would definitely affected their mindset and the level of desperation they played with. The smugness by the coaching staff and the supporters, at scoring Judd and Kruezer is what really gives me the shits as well as their corrupt president Dick Pratt.

thats funny jackster83 that they are still winless under Ratten yet he is very highly regarded by all at carlton. Answers the question whether they wanted to win or not last year. :)
