Time for an updated thread.

Now that the footy season is on us again, the moderator workload has increased due to opposition supporters coming to the Blues board to elicit a negative response.

I reiterate the BigFooty posting guidelines that state that you must be respectful when posting on other teams boards.

Opposition supporters

* Constructive and friendly debate is more than welcome.

* Joining in the spirit of existing satire and friendly banter may also be okay. If you have a history of trolling Carlton, attempted banter along the same lines might be interpreted differently.

* Saying you were only joking after you have been infracted = bad luck. If you are not sure and don't make it clear, then don't post it.

* Opposition fans do not have the same right of reply as Carlton fans. If you want to get even with a Carlton fan, choose another board to do it (within BF guidelines).

* Personal abuse by an opposition fan will meet with an infraction.

* Disrespect towards Carlton or its players will meet with an infraction.

* The moderators reserve the right to interpret your intent as they see fit.

* If you want to complain against an infraction via PM or on the boards, you may be rewarded with a further infraction.

* The moderators may at any time decide to remove your access to the Carlton board temporarily or permanently.

Carlton supporters

* You do have the right of reply against opposition supporters, however if your response far outweighs what you are responding to, warnings or infractions may be handed out. Let's remember kids post here too.

* Abuse of fellow Carlton supporters may incur an infraction or a warning. If you disagree, ask the moderators for feedback by way of reporting the post. Rest assured, we will discuss and monitor if something is a potential issue.

* If you are found to be an opposition supporter posing as a Carlton supporter, your board access will be removed and enough infraction points retrospectively incurred for trolling posts, to ensure you spend a spell on the sidelines site wide.

* Repetitive negative agendas will be watched closely. This is a forum for Carlton supporters, not Carlton detractors, so if you dip predominantly into the latter, you leave yourself open to sanctions. Objectivity is the key.

* Don't spam competitor sites.

* Please do not quote whole articles from media sources. The correct format is link-paragraph or few lines to get the gist of issue-link.

* If you must swear, do not come up with inventive ways to type the word without actually typing the whole word. Most of us will get what you are trying to say if you just type the word in full and let the swear filter do its job. While we try not to be too pedantic with rules, there is potential for infraction for repeat offenders.

* No stalking. Do not follow specific posters around with the intention of calling them out on previous posts, when the thread has nothing to do with the issue. We have no problem with a particular post being called out in the relative thread it was posted in, but doing it off topic repetitively in an effort to heap scorn on a poster, may be frowned upon. These things will be taken on a case by case basis. Just know that we will look at it.

* We now have an official Carlton presence on the board in the form of Carlton_FC_Media. They are here to answer questions and provide assistance with club related matters as appropriate. Please do not fill official Carlton threads with nonsense, criticism of other posters or complaints against the club in a less than respectful manner. We appreciate finally having a club presence here as it is great recognition for our community, and we aim to protect that.

This board has increased its traffic greatly in recent times and with that increase comes an increase in troublemaking and trolling.

We will not always catch everything and we may not act on everything, however the onus is on the posters to check their own behaviour, not the moderators to be 100% consistent (although that is our aim). If we spend a couple of hours cleaning up rubbish, then we may not be as forgiving of breaches as we would be if it had been quiet recently.

A long time reasonable poster may not incur the same punishment as a new poster who has always pushed the boundaries. You make your own reputation and may occasionally be judged based on that reputation. They are the facts of life.

Once more, if you are not sure, ask .... or don't post it.

Regards

Moderator Bashing Threads

There is a sitewide rule against starting threads or posting moderator bashing content.

You may not always see eye to eye with moderators but they do a voluntary job in an effort to provide a better site for ALL, not the few, and they are often dealing with multiple posters and don't have time for petty vendettas.

In the past, warnings have been inserted into threads that touch on this issue and posts have been deleted. However, the moderators are unified in stamping out this behaviour and infractions will be handed out in future.

Remember, you choose what you post, nobody forces you to submit it. If you lack the self control to monitor you own posting, then a moderator can not be held responsible for applying the rules.

If you have a problem with a moderator, PM them respectfully (smart comments, attitude and arguing will meet with more infractions) and try to get it sorted out. If it becomes petty debate, heed the moderators warning to desist. If you are still not satisfied, PM an admin with your concerns. If you do not get the outcome you want after that, chalk it up to your BigFooty experience. Not everybody gets what they want.

If you see a post that needs to be moderated, please report the post. We do not see all posts and you shouldn't assume that we will. This is compounded when posters complain on the boards about the lack of moderation when the post has not been reported to begin with. We're human, we don't like to be accused of condoning inappropriate posts that we have no knowledge of.

Starting threads about individuals on a public forum encourages others to sink the boot as well. There is no purpose to it except for the poster to vent and gain support for their action.

It must stop.

Regards

Re: Moderator Bashing Threads

Posting quality thread
http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=579769

We moderators have been discussing quality for a while but haven't put anything into writing as to how this will work.

These are my thoughts and the other moderators can add to it as they see fit.

We do not want to censor negative opinion at all, so can we refrain from the sarcastic comments re censorship.

This is what we don't want:

* Name calling and abuse towards players, re their skills, position in the team, what kind of vegetable they remind you of, parentage etc. If you dislike a player in terms of the way they play, it is easy enough to articulate that in a more constructive way.

* You can participate in or start a thread about a particular player, but let's not do a new one every single week to repeat the same message, and let's not turn a broader thread such as pre-match discussion into a thread about one player. In these broader threads, if you think someone should be dropped, name your side but refrain from getting involved in debates about the worth of that player. These threads are for discussing how we can win the next game, not for repeatedly bagging a player in each week.

* Positive posters, let's not find EVERY instance of someone wanting to drop a player and fire from the hip 'are you serious?', 'you're not a supporter' etc etc. Feel free to disagree and name your own changes. Feel free to dig up and follow up in dedicated player thread if you wish but let's not derail the existing one.

* We will be deleting more posts and if someone does not get the message from a deleted post, we will be giving more warnings. The warning is then recorded for the other mods to see and if it continues, they may start working their way up the range of infractions and even on to board suspensions.

I think we can all see it. A great divide and much tension is starting to occur. The ones who want the right to be critical are getting frustrated at a perceived push to censor them. The ones that hate negativity are getting frustrated at the repetitive nature of the negativity. One side thinks the mods are censoring free speech, the other side thinks that the mods are not doing their jobs.

We have tried hard to please as many people as possible and to continue what should be an amicable bonding experience for all of us, but as the seams begin to fray, we may have to take a step back and just do our jobs regardless of what you may think of us. In the end, it is the continuation of quality on the board that is paramount.

We will make unpopular decisions but if you enquire with respect, we will endeavour to explain our reasons. We may respect your opinion as posters but as moderators, what is good for the majority of the board and what keeps the quality posters on the board will always receive a higher weighting.

I am hoping we are all mature enough to know none of it is personal and if you disagree with our actions, our hearts are in the right place.

While I have your attention, we encourage posters to apply for Richard Pratt Memorial Board access. I have spent precious little time working out how this works but Bee is all over it so feel free to PM her for details.

If you want to use this thread for further suggestions to help with the quality of the board, feel free to do so.

For instance, perhaps we can have a dedicated Feral Fan thread each week, where some of the more hostile discussions about player worth can take place? That way, those that don't want to be bombarded with that sort of thing can just not enter the thread.

Cheers

A lot of criticism of moderating is creeping on to the boards. If you guys want us to be less visible, you need to stop drawing us out to have to explain ourselves. If you really need to know why something was done, PM us. If that brings you no satisfaction, chalk it up to experience as we don't make decisions lightly and will not usually reverse our stance because an opinion is restated.

Those seeing posters banned need not make unkind references to any dictatorship as you don't always know the background and don't see deleted posts. It may seem funny but since some posters do have genuine issues with moderation, it only serves to motivate them to join in.

We don't have a high infraction rate for Carlton posters, so if the worst you have to worry about is to be asked to get back on topic or having the odd post deleted or moved, you're not doing too badly.

I reiterate ... moderators give freely of their time. Nobody becomes a moderator to make your time on BigFooty harder. A spirit of cooperation is desirable at all times.

Opposition supporters. We realise you like to see other teams lose and like to see other team's supporters have a mini-meltdown.

Feel free to do so, but .... if you choose to like a negative rant from a Carlton poster tearing strips off his own team, it is tantamount to typing those words yourself.

We'd much rather you enter a thread, provide constructive and respectful feedback, rather than sit back with a smile on your face waving a red rag to the bull by making your appearance and approval of the meltdown visible. Stick to the Bay. That's what it is there for.

I also don't want messages in a week's time if you are red carded, telling me that you were hard done by. You don't make the rules and you don't get the rules overturned because you are special.

Thank you. Play on.

Just to add to this.....

Carlton supporters, this is your forum. Of course we welcome opposition fans but only if they are here to add to the board in a positive manner, and certainly not at the expense or to the detriment of Carlton fans.

If you believe you've been the subject of a lurking liker, the last thing we want is for you to call them out in the public domain. We try to keep things in line and on topic as much as possible and inviting a potential lurking liker to explain themselves on the forum may lead us down a slippery slope we'd clearly rather avoid.

So what should you do if you see a lurking liker? Simple...let us know about it via PM, or by reporting the relevant post. That way you'll alert us all and you can be sure we'll investigate the matter further and believe me, we won't have any issue handing out infractions if they are warranted.

The odd bay genius comes in to like my OP in relation to the like button after our losses, thinking they have found a way to circumvent the warning. I don't think you accidentally came here, stumbled across this thread and found it agreeable. It's worse if you are on the bay being derogatory about us before you come here to like posts. We're not going to be baited on our own board. The bay is supposed to be fully bunded. Spill all your toxic waste in there.

I'm not sure why I need to say this, but it appears I do:

Racism, sexism, homophobic remarks or discrimination in general is not something the Carlton board or any other board takes kindly to. All of these things should have been consigned to the dust bin of history.

People banter, people joke but real people are often on the end of those 'jokes' and if it causes offense, you run the risk of incurring our wrath. Please be sensible and considerate.

Update to post 2. If you see an inappropriate post, help us out by reporting it and we will assess. Please don't complain about the lack of moderation without giving us the chance to deal with it first. This is unfair and just creates further problems. Treat us as you would like to be treated.

Thread ban for anybody who blanket calls out a group of non-specific posters for oneupmanship reasons.

i.e 'Where are the Polson haters/lovers now, after he does something good or bad.'

'Oh, be careful about saying anything bad about player A or the lynch mob will be on you.'

Anything derogatory about negative posters flocking to the thread.

Negative posters not being constructive in how they express it. We have standards.

Public undermining of the board, the mods or each other. Use your diplomacy skills. Use the Q&A board or PMs.

Third man in attacks.

Anything derogatory related to intelligence or state of mind or levels of delusion etc.

Threads will get hit hard. All manner of useful contributors will get hit. None of it will be personal.

We are sick of the whinging, sick of the snark, sick of the accusations and disrespect we cop for trying to perform our voluntary roles.

Zero tolerance. Please don't complain to us about how unfair it is afterwards. Not accepting decisions is potentially grounds for further action as per BF site wide rules.

This will apply from the moment this gets added to the rules thread with an alert in the title.
