Carlton
Some time ago Carlton announced it was going to stand alone in the VFL.

Not too long after they announced an about face and we are remaining aligned to the Bullants. No explanation for the change in plans was given publicly by the club.

Recently Carlton announced that it had appointed Teague as playing coach of the Bullies and development coach of Carlton.
This appears to be a decision made by and in the best interests of Carlton, not the Bullants. Following that we had Skinny's similar appointment.

It appears that control of the on field running of the Bullants seems to be under control of Carlton now.

At a guess I think what may have happenned is that when Carlton announced that it was going to field its own VFL team the Bullants realised they could not survive if they had to stand alone.
They realised that the issue for Carlton was the development of Carlton listed players, and negotiated to stay aligned and alive, handing the power to Carlton in terms of coaching and player selection.

If anyone knows anything or has other thoughts regarding why the alliance was retained please share.

Their coach has always been decided by Carlton, so no real change there other than the Pagan - Mitchell stand off but that was Pagan's doing.

I read recently Carlton get to play alot more home games at Princes Park but I would still much rather see our boys play in Navy Blue and develop a greater passion for our jumper. It's my understanding the alliance is a 5 year deal.

Northern Bullants?

I wish Carlton get to play a lot more home games at Princes Park!!

Im dumbfounded as to why Teague and Lappin are our development coaches. I don't see what possible criteria could have been used to decide they were the best possible candidates for the job. They have no qualifications whatsoever. Teague barely even had an AFL career. I think it's a huge step backwards for us. Where everything seems to be coming good and being professional once Swan has arrived, I can't see how Teague as Bullants player/coach benefits the Blues

Uninformed drivel.

Not many of us know or are aware on what certain individuals can bring to the table. They were not just hired for the sake of it, they must be well liked, competant and driven. Plus they are fresh out of the game, and already have an understanding of our current playing list.

Also, since when did you need to be an elite player to become a good coach. Teague may have not been that talented, but he always showed complete and utter commitment to the club and was a good servant IMO.

There was a guy who was a handy back pocket fot the Tiges in the 70's - no experience and seemed to develop his players pretty well for about 20 odd years.

The point being that Teague and Lappin will do what we need them to for the sake of our kids developing - this is good for us and won't be a lot worse off for the Ants.
Just means Hampson and Kreuzer will get to ruck in the Ants rather than the Ants seconds.

so because teague was committed and a good servant it makes him a good coach? there are plenty of assistant coaches and blokes who have qualifications such as learning at the AIS academy who imo would be a better fit. Teague has no qualifications whatsoever. and he illustrated no sense of footy smarts in his playing days. he was brave yes, but i fail to see how that will help him with coaching tactics. as well as that, the idea of a playing coach is terrible imo. doesn't allow him to focus completely on the job at hand. there would have been plenty of blokes we could have gotten with more qualifactions, so why teague? i am yet to see anything that convinces me he has what it takes to be a good coach - what can you highlight that suggests he will be?

Nothing more than a diamond in the rough. there will always be odd occasions such as that. happens with players, such as getting dean cox at a bargain through the rookie list. fact is though, there is a higher success rate of finding talent with early picks. just like there is a higher success rate of finding good coaches who have served some sort of apprenticeship or have some sort of qualifications. we could have found plenty of people who would have also allowed us to develop our kids in the ants the way we wanted to, with the big difference being that they were also qualified in some sort of coaching

It's a bit like when you finish your University degree or any other quallification. You need experience to get a job, often no one wants to hire inexperienced people, but no one knows what you are capable untill you start your job. You could be outstanding.

The decision makers at Carlton have seen how Teague operates as a person, footballer player and on the training track etc. They have obviously seen certain quality characteristics that you have failed to see in him.

Give him a chance before claiming he is not right for the job.

Teague knew the writing was on the wall for his afl career and he prepared for life after by doing a few coaching courses etc etc.

Skinny could of played on but retired when asked and showed sacrifice for the club.

Give them a chance before we kick them!

How do you know that Teague hasn't been mentoring and basically assistant coaching some of the guys at training and in the ants for the last 2 years........from what I hear he is very good with this aspect and is a good at the basics..........what's more he will be thankful to the Blues for the chance and will do more or less what we want.

Sounds perfect to me.

Why risk getting someone in who is a "coach in waiting" such as Mitchell, who will become less focussed on development and more focussed on results.
Wins for the Ants would be great.............games into Austin at CHB, Kreuzer and Hampson in the ruck........Edwards on the HFF would be even better.

As for the Diamond in the rough, the trend now is to do an apprenticeship, but not that long ago you didn't need to, nor did you need to be a champion player..........they are exceptions rather than rules.

Lol i dont know - thats what ive been asking. I was saying that i hadn't read anything about Teague's qualifications. jj1978 then told me about the courses he did, thats what i was trying to find out, whether teague was qualified or not

I heard an interview on SEN a day or so after the appointment and he talked about how he did the AFL certified training courses.

Gotta hand it to Teague for doing that, whilst he was still an AFL listed player. I think that both he and skinny will be good for the kids around the club.

Skinny was a very smart AFL player. To get what he got out of his body is phenomenal. He was part of the group that complained that the kids weren't developing under Pagan, so this is his shot to see if he can rectify that problem.

the only thing holding David Teague back in his career as an AFL footballer was his size and speed.

He could play the game. noone could question his courage. He won our B&F dont forget!

i Think he'll be a great coach and will lead the boys in the magoos on the field too.

what makes you say that though? courage and bravery doesn't transfer into coaching skills

he'll be good because he obviously has some knowledge about the game, being able to play AFL and win an AFL B&F, with size and speed holding him back.

The younger players will definitely learn more from coaches they respect, so I don't mind the appointment of Teague and Skinny at all. Both great clubmen, very well respected, and well Ratts is Ratts...
