Just went down to catch the last bit of the Ants game.

Sad to see that the players still have to BYO their own ice for icebaths/nursing injuries/etc.

Here is a report from our old mate Wangers from over on TC.

http://www.talkingcarlton.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=20521

A rainy day at Princes Park today. With school holidays, there were about 100 people at training. Melbourne Storm were on the park until about 2:05pm, so training was delayed. Stayed for about an hour.

Full squad trained. Usual warm ups, but interestingly players were deliberately sliding chest first along the turf to aclimatise to the slippery conditions.

Injury group consisted of Blackwell & Kreuzer. They did sprints along the social club wing.

Focus of today was contested one on one work and holding the ball up until the right option was available. Seems part of our game plan is to play tempo footy cause that's what was being practiced. At times we were good at it in finding the right option and precisely hitting the targets in trying wet conditions. Some hard running into space was part of this training.

Some basic skills were practiced like kicking 30m to a team mate.

8 small groups of 4 were formed for a 2 on 2 handballing exercise where the players had a small space to pass to his team mate whilst pressure was applied by the opposing pair.

Hampson, Fisher, Aisake, and Ackland trained and trained uninhibited by their injuries.

Jamo went out with the main group, then went into the rooms after a chat with one of the physio's (I think the high performance manager, Justin Cordy) - practiced some light jogging, then went back in the rooms not to return for the whole session - I hope he is not injured, but I think he could be. Friday training will tell.

That's all I have.

A small follow up from Elvis in the same thread:

Great report Wangers.

I was there as well today in the driving rain and cold wind. Hampson, Fisher looks ready to go and both improved as the session progressed especially Fishers overhead marking. Kruzer ran 200 meter sprints but did not look like he will be ready for this week. Jamieson must have general sorness or tightness in his legs as he did not have any noticable limp and his running did not look out of sync. He still has three days to recover so there is still hope but Friday's training session will tell all.

Others to impress were Browne and Pfeiffer and Benjiman is starting to move with a lot of speed and grace.

One of the training drills worked on beating the flood by holding on to the ball around the middle and then moving it sideways until a forward presented. This drill showed that we will not give up possesion easily by just kicking it long.

There was also a fair bit of work by the forwards to continually present and not sit and wait for a long bomb to a contest. Fev and Fisher did well in this drill. There was also plenty of clearance work at ball ups and Bentick, Murphy and Hadley did well there. Benticks has improve his pace and his skills are better than Carrazzo's.

All in all the skills were quite good for a wet and slippery day and can see the jig saw puzzle coming together with the game plan and team structure.

And another small report in the same thread from aboynamedsue: ;)

Murphy was the stand-out on the track today for mine. He is just a joy to watch.

Browne (who is a bit of a look-a-like for Murph, actually) is coming along nicely. Not sure if he will play this week, but he will get a taste of AFL footy at some stage this year. Possibly sooner rather than later. Pfeiffer looks ready to go, and AB must be close to selection.

Hammer looked a little cautious to me at times, but trained fairly well and finished the whole session. Fish trained strongly.

I doubt Special K will play this week, and there must be some doubt about Jamo, but they don't look too far away.

As Wangers & Elvis have explained, it's obvious what the coaching staff are trying to teach the players. However, it will take time for the players to master that game plan in a match situation.

Question regarding the forward line structure, considering we have probably the best full forward in the game, why do people think we don't just leave the 50 open for him? Dead serious, I would have Fev and Fisher deep in the 50 (NOBODY else), and just let them lead into all the space. Even when Fev isn't beign double teamed, our forwardline is usually so crowded that most of time he is attempting a mark in a pack. I would then have Eddy Betts sitting just outside the 50, ready to sprint inside and collect the crumbs. Obviously it would mean we would have lots of numbers on the ball (a bit like Sydney =S), but surely Fev would benefit from an open 50?
Why do people think we havn't tried this in the past? If anything, we like to load up our 50 with lots of forwards

For some reason the opposition won't listen to us.

Man don't just be a smartass and actually post something constructive. Plenty of teams play with open forwardlines. If we only have 2 forwards in there, there's only so many defenders they'll put back. If they drop 1 loose man in defence, the 50 is still too big for him to cover both forwards, and if they drop 2 or more, I see that as an advantage for us in the rest of the ground. I also think our midfield could play to that gameplan with a congested center as I think with the likes of Judd, Stevens, Murph, and Carrots and AB (both who are good are getting the ball out of packs), are good enough to beat a lot of other midfields

we have done that on many occasions where fev is the only person from the blues in the 50

the opposition know this ploy, so they either double team him or zone off on him and when it gets kicked to him he has a couple to contest with.

i can remember we did this against the saints in the first game last year

problem then and probably now is we bomb it to fev and not give him quality supply and we allow these defenders to do it as well. They are happy to give up ground to our forwards especially when we roam outside 50. coz really fev is the only player who can kick constantly from 50! so they hang back coz they know its going to Fev next!!

Fair enough. I think 2 forwards is differnt to 1 though. With Fev being the only forward, both players can run where he goes, whereas if Fish is in there too, he and Fev can both lead to different spots, and with the whole of the 50 to them, i can't see a loose man being able to cover both. Unless they play more than one loose man in defence, which as i said before, i think would be a big advantage to us in the middle. Either way, we have to find fev some space. he's the best fullforward in the game, he'd use it beautifully. too often we see 3rd men in who come and spoil it, he doesn't get many chances at one-on-one contests where he has space to use

Thought you and Bluegal chatting earlier about sat night sounded like a convo between sisters and assumed....wrongly.

Anyhoo, back on topic, any chance Hampson might actually be lifted up off the jumping pad and actually fly today?
