Conditions: Varying

Today was a very light/medium session, not much happening today other than one important fact I must point out. Whilst doing a drill (Involving a defender playing on a forward, with the defender trying to disallow the attacker to get into the centre square as well as cutting off any kicks towards him), Jarrod Waite and Setanta O'hAilpin got VERY physical. But the outcome is not what you would think, it was Waite who flored Setanta! All in good fun though, but it was still amazing to see!

For those who didn't know, Sam Jacobs didn't attend training due to him being at a funeral in South Australia.

I too was at training (very small turn out probably due to the family day tomorrow) and whilst yes, Setanta and Waite was fun to watch, the most important thing by a mile in training was that Juddy completed the entire session !! He moved freely and was involved in everything, even the match simulation. The ball seemed to gravitate to him whenever he was invloved in a drill. He was a class above anyone else out there.
The other thing of note was that the other players were calling Stevens "boss".:)

I noticed the name 'boss' being thrown about aswell... Ominous signs?

Judds ground work for a supposedly injured fella was top notch today. The ball fell to him on multiple occasions, and his long distance kicking accuracy was top notch!

Done, now lets sit back and watch the dills respond.....:p

Thanks to those who jumped on the main page and helped me out. Lots of dimbats trolling replies there.....

Righto Guys, Here is a couple of Training Reports in the same thread from over on TC for Saturday 9th February 2008. Thanks to Blue Skys Ahead and aboynamedsue for their observations.

Blue Skys Ahead:
Quick summary :
Bentdick, sake and benji were not part of the main squad. Did various kicking and handball drills which contained decent skills although benji was a little sloppy at times. Must say that bentdick did look good.

The main boys did stretching and various kicking drills from what I saw.
Lots of voice and skill level was at best good.

Juddy participated in all I saw and I thought looked in decent nick.
Stevens also looked good.

Really impressed with fevs skill level at the moment, could be a big year from him. His marking and general ball handling skills are of a pretty high standard imo.

Kruz amazes me. For a guy of his size to have such decent skills at such a young age, he could be anything.

Having said that, hammer trained well and showed his ready to be our #1 ruck.

Murph and gibbsy just ooze class. Their skill level is really something else.
Feel free to ask any questions...
Ill try and answer as best I can.

aboynamedsue:
Bluesbest, I had a look at training this morning and am happy to report that Judd completed the full session. He looked to be going at about 75% most of the time but he put on the after-burners on a few occassions, which warmed the heart... He looks to me like he's holding himself back at the moment, and gradually over the next few weeks he'll get it up to 100% (mind you, Judd's 75% is better than most AFL players!). The way he's able to cleanly gather the ball off the deck without breaking stride is genius. He did a lot of stretching throughout the session and missed the odd target, but he looked happy enough walking off the ground with the rest of the boys at the end. I guess it's how he pulls up tomorrow after a tough session like that which we don't know. For what it's worth, I came away a lot less worried about Judd's injury than I was before.

As for Special K, he trained solidly and he and Carlos did some extra marking practice at the end with Skinny & Teague.

I thought the overall standard of training was better than some other sessions I've seen this pre-season, but we still have a long way to go... When you see all the boys out on the ground you realise how young our list is. We need to be patient over the next 12 months...

I can't fault the effort (and voice) however. There was some contested stuff towards the end which was particularly interesting, and some of the boys were really playing for keeps....Wiggo vs Armfield and Waite vs Carlos were particularly physical encounters. Healthy competition amongst the group is always good to see.

The rehab group was Benji, AB & Aisake - the only player I didn't see at all was Jacobs, but (I think) everyone else was present and did the whole session.

Not sure who I would say was a standout, although Fev looked impressive. Betts trained well too. Hadley is bigger than I thought and he might slip under the radar of a few teams this year if he can stay fit.

If anyone has any questions about specific players, I'll try my best to answer them...

I have a question of my own for anyone else who was there....who was the bloke who spoke to the players for about 20 minutes at the start of the session? I thought it was an umpire, perhaps explaining rules for the NAB Cup, but he then joined in the session and participated in a number of drills. I didn't recognise him, does anyone know who he was?

The boys are training on Wednesday at 3:30pm :)

No training reports from this morning -probably because there were about 5 people there -and one guy was wearing a Geelong guerensey and Collingwood cap

I managed to drop by just before 10:30 so I missed most of the training but nonetheless have a few positives to share with the faithful:
  • Judd was out there with the main group until the very end of the session and didn't seem to have any pain or discomfort on his way into the rooms.
  • This is further encouraging in that the session went very late, they didn't head back into the rooms until well after 11 (training was meant to be from 8:30-10:30).
  • Teaguey took Hampson, Jamison, Grigg, Ellard, Austin and possibly one or two others for extra kicking work while the main group went through their warm down. Hampson's kicks were hitting the targets laces out every time!
  • Injury group is down to only Aisake and Ackland now.
  • Many people mention how much bigger Hadley is in person, but this does not really do justice to his size -he is a serious unit. I caught him together with Ackland and it seemed like there couldn't have been more than an inch between them in height (that was just for you audas!) but his arms, shoulders etc. made Ackland seem light framed. I am reconsidering my comments about the Gleeson article last week suggesting that Hadley could be an option at CHF being a misquote of Ratten who actually said Harts not Hads. Hadley looks every bit KP size plus some!
Sorry I don't have more for you...

Yeah, I'd imagine that not many people knew about the session

During the jumper presentation on family day , Ratten made a mention of one of the younger guys injuring his groin and that this would keep him out for 4weeks and should return to play about mid season - cant remember who this player was .

Like I said I didn't go there for training but training ran very late so they were still out there when I went passed. I missed most of the session so can't really say for sure (that's my discalimer and I'm sticking to it, says my lawyer :p).

Aisake and Ackland were walking the boundary line together.

Everyone else who was out there were broken up into 3 groups, most of them quite far from me, but very soon after they all came together to warm down (except the group that went with Teaguey -that was close to where I was).

When the main group was doing their warm down walking lap around the ground Clint was trailling the pack by some distance and looked like he could have been experiencing some discomfort. But he wasn't in the 'injury group' with Aisake and Ackland and I only like to propagate the positive, not speculate on the negative, there are more than enough of those as it is.

So true BlueYoss . It was a good report to read .

Nice read Yoss.
Thanks for making the effort to post the report.

I have thrived on the work of others in this regard for long enough, it was definitely my turn to give something back, albeit a rather modest contribution.

Went down to training this afternoon - reasonably good session. Hartlett left the track during the first drill with what looked like a jarred knee or a hamstring down where it attaches behind the knee. Didn't look too severe, but with his history, who knows!

Murph looked a class above, particularly during the skins vs shirts drill. He got tackled pretty hard the first time he got the ball - they couldn't lay a hand on him after that, his work through the traffic first rate. Gibbs also did well during this drill.

Was watching AB and Benji pretty closely doing their ball drills with Teague while the others were in full training. I'm not convinced that Benji will make it I'm afraid - he just doesn't look like a natural footballer. His reaction times were shocking and his handballs using his left hand terrible. AB's hands were really really good which may have made Clint look worse than he was.

Judd did not particpate in any of the contact drills, apart from kicking the ball to the two players who were contesting. Did all of the running drills and moved well. Some nice lateral movements there as well and a beautiful pick up off the ground followed by a precision pass.

Also interesting to note that towards the end of the session, the boys were split into two groups of 20 odd each and did some run throughs that involved jogging the length of the centre square, going around a bag, bunching up again and then upping the pace as they hit a cone about 5 metres from the bag, and it appeared that Armfield (pretty sure it was him) was very vocal with his group, making sure that everyone was going around the bag and then bunching as instructed by the coaches before setting off at the cone. Good to see a young fella new to the Club taking it upon himself.

It's possibly the first time he's actually gone flat out during a drill. But I haven't been to many sessions, so I don't really know

got down there for a little bit of the session:

Judd - moved normally although did not compete in the physical work. In the last couple of drills he really excited everyone, it was the first time he put the afterburners on and he certainly hasn't lost his speed.

I suspect his lateral movement still must give him slight discomfort but on the looks of today and with Rd.1 still a month away i'd be confident he'll be tearing the Tigers apart under the twilight Melbourne sky.

Bryce Gibbs is a young man possesed, such polish in everything he does with the look of utter determination. 2008 will see the emergence of genuine superstar.

Murph - class in everything he does

Jordan Russell moves well and works as hard as anyone. look for a big year (he needs too anyway)

Fev - Stickiest hands i think i've ever seen was marking bullet passes on the run full tilt with a defender right up his clacker.

Little AJ impresses me too, works hard and is neat footaballer.

Also lastly as exciting as the big Hammer is people need to remember he still has alot of development to go. Don't expect too much from him just yet. You can tell he's got that something though that is quite special.....as does Kreuzer. I really think these boys can be lethal ruck-forward combo in years to come.

Those in the leadership group are fantastic, Simmo, Carrazzo, Scotland, Fev, Judd and Stevo they all set a great example.

In a few years time, this will be the ruck duo of the AFL, and by some margin as well.

Oh FFS.

I really hope that it isn't his hammy again, or that's it.........has to be curtains for the kid.

Managed to catch nearly all of today's session. A few observations....

Fev's hands are exquisite, disposal is spot on too. Most skillful fella his size in the league.

Murph was a standout again and it's not just his orange boots

Jacobs surprised with his disposal. The big fella is obviously working his backside off to make the most of his opportunity

Austin's lack of intensity continues to frustrate. This was most apparent during the bag tackle drill. The intensity shown immediately after by Saddo and Clokey made his effort look all the more piss weak. Has some upside but really needs to pull finger!

Ando's intensity was quite the opposite - worked his butt off.

Armfield does show great focus and exhibited great leadership potential today. Direction and voice improves by the session.

Hampson caught my eye today, not so much in what he did, more just the way he moved. He's so graceful and althetic. He looks like a 203cm buffed ballet dancer.

Overall, i was pleased with the talk and intensity of the session. Training these days appears to be better prepared and organised than it used to be - probably a sign of the strength of our coaching staff. As a firm believer in you playing as you train the only way is up for our Blueboys.
