Thanks, it will be interesting how ROK and Davies go during the year. One thing, though, about the Joseph comparison, if pitted against players such as Ablett, does Davies have that burst of speed that Joseph has? Endurance is one thing, but I would think, agility and off-the-mark speed is a necessity for those kind of match ups.

Joseph's speed didn't exactly help him against L.Thomas last year.

Or Shaw who was too good in the air for him.

If Davies knows how to position himself and play the angles like Carrazzo who shut down Davey, then he could play that role on a quicker player. Davies is a good tackler after he closed down some juniors, Isaac Smith (@ 2.25), and Dustin Martin. Smith spun out of Chris Johnson's tackle in close, but couldn't get out of Davies' text book tackle. Looks like he could be a team player after some of his run down tackles in his highlights. I'll be content if Davies ends up half as good as Hanna who was a hard running wingman who could take a mark. Hanna wasn't a great kick, but still forged a good career for himself.

He has never been a defender - despite being played there all year.

There are some theories about this, and one of them is that they were trying to encourage him to add the 'offensive' side to his tagging game by placing him in (perhaps) a lower pressure situation - ie dashing out of the backline, rather than making him learn that aspect in the heat of the midfield, where decisions need to be made 10 times quicker.

Nevertheless, he was average to poor last year - but wouldn't get dropped for his endeavour and toughness is second to none.

Definately needs to add aspects to his offensive game to actually earn a consistent spot in the team.

Have absolutely nothing to report on Carter - wouldn't be able to pick him out of a lineup and I don't know his number.

Was in the rehab group BTP. The handballing drill they were doing over by the interchange bench was right in front of where I was standing.

Still made the top 10 in the B&F despite struggling at times. I think he was asked to take the game on a bit more and got caught a little bit, but in terms of selection he''s still needed (Thomas aside - but lets not forget Thomas also trounced Russell, kicking 2 on him in 5 minutes).

Too often last year we had too many guys playing roles and not enough playing football. In my best 22...and let's face it, it's the only one that counts...I think there is room for one of Joseph, Ellard & Robinson (this also assumes a fit and firing McLean.

Whether it eventuates or not there is talk of the game opening up more this year. We have guys like Carrazo and Walker who can play a role and contribute more than those above going the other way. Gibbs has shown he can be an attacking threat in the middle, and keep tabs on his man. I also think it would be good for Lucas' development to throw him a bone every now and again.

I agree with this post - but I pose a new question now:

If Curnow comes good (which isn't outside the realms of possibility given what he showed in the VFL last year) ..

can you fit him into that line up? - or would it come at the expense of Ellard?

If the mumurs about Armfield becoming a tagger are true - does that leave AJ to play as the backpocket?

Thanks for the write up guys, much appreciated especially for those based on the other side of the country.

In regards to Murphy looking unhappy from the times I have been able to get to training he has never been a big talker on the track.

Maybe its just me hoping Murph hasn't signed something last october and is now regretting it.

Joseph and Robinson would both line up if our opening game was next week and both would have markedly different roles within team structure.

Not concrete for me. Both would/should be in the last 4-5 picked, and the recruitment of some mature aged types like Duigan and Laidler means these spots are there for the taking.

Well we can probably strip it back even further and say Judd, Murphy, Gibbs and Simpson aside who makes up the rest of our on ball division. Walker and McLean come with their own question marks.

But yes if it is a debate about run with or defensive roles in the midfield then Curnow should be included.

I can't see and I don't think we will see Armfield running through the middle this year. Has at least two of the attributes you want in a small defender in spades (pace and balls), and the rest seems to be coming along nicely.

From what I've seen to date, there is no way known that Curnow would get a gig before Joseph. Joseph is much quicker of mind and executes without a second thought.

Just on that note, and as much as I like him, Lucas still seems somewhat slow in his thinking when he has the ball.
He still keeps getting caught in the same way as he was last year.
I've no doubt the reaction times will come down but he somehow manages to run into several defenders before trying to rid the ball.

Not a lot I can agree with here sorry Harks. Curnow needs to earn a spot like anyone, but coming back from injury it can take a few weeks until you feel and look like you are running on top of the ground. I'd give him an uninterrupted month and then pass judgement.

The bold is my chief gripe with Joseph.

Lucas had a couple of shaky moments in his first game from memory, but outside of that he looks to be in the top handful on our list with regard to reading play and decision making. Very comfortable in traffic. I want to see the ball in his hands a lot this year.

My remarks are based purely on what is on show through training sessions, choosing to leave the past behind.

Curnow has looked good but when the heat was on seemed rather clunky and slow.
You can forgive the new guys for feeling a little edgy, but on what has been on show to date, there wouldn't be a second thought for the MC to be using Curnow ahead of Joseph, for now.

Of course that may all well change over the next few weeks, but it would be hard to substitute Joseph's willingness and hardness for a first gamer.
Just can't see it happening, can you?

Don't rightly know what the MC plan on doing, and isn't that a nice development.

As I am sure most married men on here could attest willingness and hardness isnt always enough to to achieve a desired outcome.

The drill showed how reliant we are on too few players to dispose accurately into the F50. ( )

Armfield, Touhy and Duigan all very content to take the game on. ( )

Labi’s movement and cleanliness below his knees was something to get excited about ( ) probably won’t be an AFL level player for a prolonged period ( ) but definitely has the tools to light it up in a few NAB Cup matches and take it from there ( ) Still very, very raw though.

Curnow a little unsure of himself at this early stage – also not particularly agile or athletic ( ) perhaps he was another of those hard, uncompromising players that EP alludes to, the one’s Ratten has been demanding for some time now. ( )

As HARKER says, Murphy isn't looking like he's in the happiest of spaces right now. ( )
