I overheard this on the news in the car; someone else was talking to me so I didn't hear the whole of it.

Carlton wants the AFL logo removed from its jumper because it "clashes" with their new sponsor. Did I hear that right?

I'm not paying Carlton out or anything, just thought it was amusing.

Carlton's new sponsor, Mayne Nickless, has a red circle as its logo. Perhaps Elliot (or the new paymasters) think it will get confused with the AFL logo.

I thought it was amusing too.

Just about every club (bar Geelong with FORD) have a different clour sponsor. Who cares. Carlton actuallt wore bright blue once to help market M&M's. They should stop whingeing (as usual) and get on with life.

Carlton's guernsey is one of their weaknesses. It is bold, and traditional, sure. But it is VERY unmarketable.

I've often wondered why Richmond, who have won 10 flags with a 52% all time win rate have as many or more supporters than Carlton (who have won 16 flags with a 62% win-rate)

I think, the fact that Carlton wear plain old navy Blue and are called "the Blues" contributes to their "lack of support" in relative terms.

I mean, sure, they have big support, but they should be 1st (or 2nd). Instead they are 3rd, or probably 4th (behind Richmond)

I mean, if you were an impressionable 6 year old, would you rather barrack for a team called the Tigers, or Bombers........... or a team called called the Blues.

Tigers and Bombers are so much more appealing and marketable. Tiger-Tank said it in a previous post. Richmond have great colours, a great jumper, a great nickname and a great song. If they were successful, everyone would barrack for them. We saw this in the 1960's, 70's and early 80's, when every kid wanted barrack for the Tigers.

We are now seeing it with Essendon, since every kid wants to barrack for the team that wears red and black and calls themselves the "Bombers". Quite simply, Essendon is cool. Carlton is uncool. Even with their success, Carlton don't have the "cult" following of other clubs. Part of the reason, is their jumper, nickname and image. They are just not "cool" (I know that sounds corny), like Essendon are, and Richmond were when they were winning.

I just thought I'd add that any kid would be put off Carlton by the sight of John Elliot. Unless of course some kids arn't normal.

Easty - If your having a go at Carlton's Latin motto, then your also having a dig at St Kilda who also have one - It's called tradition and I must admit I am a fan of carlton's jumper.

Its the clubs one single redeeming feature, I think its a very classy strip, unique and traditional, the Dark Navy Blue with the white CFC looks superb.

However I do think you guys look better with white shorts, dunno, just think the added contrast looks better than the all Dark Navy.

Have you Bluebaggers ever heard anyone refer to your strip as Prussian Blue ? - just curious because to be precise, that is your colour.

The MandM jumper was just a Sturt rip-off.

Our jumper is classic, traditional and basically the best guernsey in the league. It looks awesome out on the field because of the dignified look the Navy Blue gives out. At least it's original (i.e. Essendon and Richmond, same design just differnt coloured stripe and it runs opposite ways.) I'm not trying to start a fight, just saying our guernsey is classic and traditional, and anything else is, as usual, jealousy. It's getting boring. AS for the actual topic of this post, the sponsor logo may look weird, i'e red on our navy guernsey, but since they are shelling out big bucks for us, I don't care.

you know nothing ! essendons guernsey is just as traditional , even more traditional as we dont change it for a sponsor deal(m&m), it is sacred, and we are more successful than crappy carlton too, plus our president isnt a big mouthed pig

Bee, I think we've got about a million supporters Australia wide - perhaps a bit less. The club says that anyway. In 1993, Essendon ran a poll, saying we had about 850,000, so I don't know what it's at now.

Look, I love Carlton's guernsey. Traditional, imposing, simple.
Personally, I have nothing against it. I hope they never change.

But from a marketing point of view, it is TERRIBLE. Essendon's black and red (and "Bombers" nickname) is far more likely to attract supporters than Carltons jumper and nickname.

You get supporters in 3 ways :

A.) Your parents
B.) You choose to follow the team that is winning.
C.) Yoiu chosse a team yourself based on your preferences on colours and nicknames as an impressionable youngster.

Carlton miss out on C. They get their supporters from A and B, which is fine. Clubs like Essendon and Richmond get their supporters from A,B and C. That is one of the reasons why Richmond has "about" as many supporters as Carlton, even though they havn't been as successful.

What is so marketable about the Bomber name?
I'll admit the bomber jumper looks okay, but it isn't really original. Change to a gold sash and you have Richmond!
